Bing Crosby was the original choice for the role but turned it down! Thank God! He NEVER would have been able to pull it off! Instead of a cigar, Crosby would have held a pipe or a glass of Minute Maid OJ!

RIP Mr Falk , thanks for the memories. Nicely put together video - however the music is not the Columbo theme , it was the main music used on the Mystery Movie opening titles that were virtually never shown in the UK.

It only appeared on a small number of actual Columbo episodes

This theme music applied to all of the alternate detectives, week to week, not just to Columbo, and there was a whistling version. As far as Columbo's own personal theme song went, I'm surprised that any fan of the show would not know it: it was "This Old Man" as in "This old man / he played four / he played knick knack at my door" It's in virtually every episode. Sometimes Columbo, himself, would whistle it while he is investigating.

Here in Germany we have no opening theme. It stands at the beginning Peter Falk as Columbo, and then begins the series

This is actually the opening Mystery Movie Theme, not just Columbo. I think it's also the Wednesday MM Theme & not Sunday.

Either way, a memorable job by Henry Mancini.
