So according the preacher, all the destroyers were destroyed and all The Lords' servants were spared and now live in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. What a God!
LOL The president does sound absurd. What a shame it would be if people actually thought that way and be like WELL AT LEAST WE DIDN'T BACK DOWN...wtf ?
I'm skeptical that there would be horses still alive and healthy enough to do work. All those other animals who had been left outside had keeled over dead already.
To those who think the Prez would be in a safe comfortable unharmed place...get real.
Every plan for nuclear war involves saving the prez and VP only. Not their familes or friends etc. That president would be alive, eating pork and beans out of a can on Air Force one with no place to land (as all airports would get hit hard.) So don't worry. He's screwed too.
Real talk at this point the prez would have been Bush I as he was VP under Regan and Regan would be ashes by then.
"Yes, my fellow Americans, my power is out... no state-of-the-art electronic martini mixer... and I ALWAYS have my pet martini at this time! Oh, it's too horrible to even THINK about! No TV Land or Nick at Nite? Or broiled lobster tails!... Ohh... ohhh... ohhhh... Poor me, poor me... (sob!)" Yeah, poor prez! Some people really have it awful! (LMAO!)
sad thing is, people still get all flustered and excited and clap like they are somehow 'good' whenever ANYONE from ANY office of ANY government makes ANY sort of announcement. lol. if this happened, there would still be people left here looking to them for leadership, being all 'proud' of their country like it really means anything to anyone but yourself and the maniacal military.
i dont think i would interested in hearing a preacher, an all powerful god, i would have a a hard time believing in an all almighty god exists. if so whose the asshole(s) that burn in hell for this. the men who followed orders, they had a choice or leaders that instructed them to do so. Id like to ask Sarah Palin this question? see what this tea bagger would say
The President of the United States: "...I share your grief; for I, too, have suffered personal loss. My power is out, too; that means I can't use my brand-new state-of-the-art computerized martini mixer!... (completely breaking down, by now!)..." Oh, how terrible! (LMAO!)
@Rockyfan10060 After something like a global nuclear war, I doubt there's any speech a surviving executive could make that wouldn't make them sound like an arrogant asshole.
The president speech is classic.... cos you can bet your house on if, touch wood, disaster like that really happens in real life, that's what he's going to say (whoever he is, from whatever country) - grand but completely meaningless, empty words.
One more thing to add to my last comment. In a real situation the sitting president would likely be dead. The VP would be kept in a undisclosed secure location while the president was out in front, relatively visible and vulnerable.
For example after 9/11 they stashed Cheney somewhere and bush was on TV etc.
So the most accurate voice for that speech would have been Dana Carvey impersonating Bush I who was VP at the time of this movie. Imagine that.
About the presidential speech portion of this movie. There is a version of it, as it was originally with a actor imitating Regan. That version strikes a bit different of a note. i.e. In this one the prez sounds like he's freshly showered and shaved in a clean comfortable bunker...or in Hawaiii who would nuke Hawaii?
In the original with the Regan Impersonator he played it different. He sounded tired, beaten, like he was a bit radiation sick himself. It brings out a different emotion.
Its a damn shame. I couldn't go on in such a world I wouldn't have the strength to carry on. I'd get a gun to end it all but the gun probably has a computer chip in it.
I think though the President and most of the Government would have been completely destroyed. The aim of a Nuclear Strike is to completely destroy your enemies ability to rebuild itself, so Government is a priority target along with Military Command and Control. Many Nuclear weapons will have been used against Washington, probably using high yield ground burst detonation, which transmits much of the energy through the ground, destroying any underground facilities.
@PoliticalPars A one megaton hydrogen bomb detonated on the ground transmits an 8 Richter scale shockwave. A tactic would have been to use a succession of high yield warheads like a sledgehammer to crush a bunker complex. This was why NORAD was abandoned in favour of airborne command and control(as seen at the beginning of the film), the mountain would have been used to flatten the base underneath it, Just as Washington would have been hammered into government bunkers underneath it.
Sounds eerily similar to a speech that President Reagan would likely have given in 1983 in the aftermath of the war. I don't know what else Reagan would have been able to say other than that America, as a country, still exists...probably a lot more than the Soviet Union. (We always did have a much larger arsenal than the Soviets)
Giving a sermon about Revelations seems rather pointless, seeing how Armageddon has already come and gone. Assuming people wouldn't abandon Christianity altogether after a nuclear war, it would likely become more nihilistic than it did during the Black Plague.
The President deserves a good slap. He cannot feel our grief. He does not know how bad the situation truely is. It is not like he is down there suffering. How are Americans going to help rebuild America again when society has broken down to a point of no return. Most people have given hope up already. How can one be hopeful when the world has ended. I do not think the President realises this, but once civilization has fallen so far, it will never go back to the point is was again.
if this actually happened. if i knew that there would be hundreds of nuclear missiles being fired at the united states. i live down the road from where a lot of the nuclear subs for america are based. i would drive as close as i could to that base and just hope i would go quick
Someone mentioned fuzzymemories tv and searching for The Day After. I recommend it. The people speaking on the issue back then really got the point. Nuclear war is totally unacceptable. Yet at the same time, a total one sided stand down simply letting the then Soviet Union be agreesive in Europe was equally unacceptable.
Such is why talks were taken to get each power to climb down together and slowly.
One more thing, as for who went nuclear first in the movie probably France.
for some reason, the president reminds me like hes making a speech about a small natural disaster, like a hurricane or earthquake. It really shows how off-touch he is with america since he's just laying back in his underground shelter living life like before the attach
This is the only meaningful part of the movie... a President babbling on about democracy from the safety of his bunker while the rest of us are dying.
I have a copy of The Day After taken off the actual broadcast in 1983. They had a different voice actor for the president who had a voice eerily similar to Ronald Reagan.
When the movie first aired in November 1983 the voice of the president was done by veteran character actor Vic Perrin who was trying to sound an awful like President Reagan. In the 1989 rebroadcast, the speech was the same but voiceover was tottaly redone by another actor.
Any leader that would allow that disaster should be hanged. Funny though his government would no longer exist, most troops are dead or dying. He would no longer have any way to enforce anything. Local war lords and other leaders would appear start rebuilding new states and nations. Some third world nations could survive and ones with intact industry/manufacturing could become major powers.
@biographco More like because of men like Gorbachev. Ronnie and his administration believed you could win a nuclear war. BTW, Russia still has a nuclear arsenal.
@sinusbradycardia The Soviets had a nuclear survivability philosophy. They had (and have) huge structures dedicated to protecting the population in the event of a nuclear attack, believing that protecting the population will lead to quicker recovery.
The US, during Regan's time, was just beginning to believe that nuclear war could be waged on a limited basis or a full scale could be survived, but the Soviets bought into that wholeheartedly.
i love the president saying 'we will depend on your strengh, your..' ya, i bet you would, since you fuckers managed to blow the whole god damn world up over a dick measuring contest
@DaytonaRoadster I also liked how the President said the US and Russia are have reached a "cease fire". Duh! Both countries threw everything including the kitchen sink at each other, bombed each other and the rest of the world back to the Stone Age, what else could either side possibly do to each other at this point?
As I recall, it was Reagan's voice, or someone's imitation of it, that was used in the President's radio address in the original airing of this show. Somehow, as I remember it, it sounded lest stridently proud than this remake's President's voice does.
if the family had to be sheltered in the basement long enough for the men to grow beards the horses would be long dead if not from radiation then from neglect.
they'd be unable to get water for starters, food, shelter from rads...not possible. they'd be as dead as those cows.
One thing director Nicholas Meyer should be commended for was not saying who preempted: the US or the USSR. If it flat out said the USSR fired first then the whole film becomes anti Soviet propaganda. By keeping it vague, and as Dr. Huxley says beside the point, Meyer made the film and it's message clear to all people and accessible to the leaders and people of the USSR. It was a smart choice. I'm sure lots of people were in his ear saying : " Just make the Russians the bad guys."
The radio address is an interesting one. On one hand it sounds ridiculous after such a devastating conflagration for the President to say we are still the leader of the free world when millions of Americans are dead and dying. On the other hand as a survivor wouldn't you want the President to convey strength and confidence? Anyone else have an opinion?
@Jacktwo04 I agree with that. The question becomes how many US lives will we sacrifice for France and Great Britan? In many realistic scenarios of ww3 those nations would have used tactical nukes against the Soviet armies. Unlike us they would be staring down the barrels of T72 tank guns, and communist oppression.
When it comes to this topic there are two kinds, those who say liberty or death, and those who say not in the face.
not the most uplifting sermon, a bit of Gods love and grace might have been a bit better rather than some old testament wrath and vengeance,,,, Where;s Charles Stanley when u need him....
No, she died once the blast hit. She hadn't left town yet. She was in a building downtown. It's in part 5 or 6, I think. You can see her turn into what looks like a skeleton in an X-ray machine.
At some point they mention that there were only about 70000 survivors from the alien genocide. I guess the aftermath should ahve been pretty much like this
What cain of president gives that cain of speech?
Is that The way the republicans think?? president murder!!
We shall create a long time ago a WWE smack Down!! Regan vs Mijaíl Gorbachov, Bush Sr. Vs Saddam Hussein, Clinton vs monica Lewinski) (LOL) Bush Jr. vs Ossama Bin Laden so we can watch them fight to dead and leave the human race Alone!!!
I've tried to find the presidential speech that aired in the 1983 original broadcast on ABC, but have had no luck in searching for it online. According to wikipedia, the actor speaking sounded just like Ronald Reagan in the original television airing. Then the Reagan administration made them change it, supposedly . If sombody has the original speech, I wish they'd put it on youtube.
you can find the "Reagan Version" of the radio address plus the original ViewPoint segment which aired after the original November 20, 1983 airing as well as original promos and commercials at the YouTube page FuzzyMemories TV just type in "The Day After" on that page.
Post nuclear war, talking to survivors with all manner of radiation sickness, injury and such, I doubt many would give a flying crap - they've got bigger problems...
it took humanity 3 billion years to unlock the deepest secrets of the universe what do they do with it they make weapons of mass destruction and they blew up the world hell of away to go
The sad thing is, these aren't the deepest secrets. We don't know 10% of what could be out there. People 500 years ago didn't know about nuclear physics. What makes us think we have all the answers? It's like a child sucking on a battery.
You take this movie pretty serious-don't worry I took it so serious back then that in 05 I went to see my son in Kansas city I drove to Lawrence just to stop the seriousness.
Who cares about the principles of democracy during these hours? The only thing that matters now is to survive...I have to admit that the speech given by the pres is quite strange.
Imo, not a single country which suffered damage during such a conflict would look up to the US or to see USSR...
The president would be dead. I mean while he was safe in a bunker the people were dying a slow death. The people in the bunker with him should of killed him.
I think that's the entire point of including this speech in the movie; it's supposed to be unrealistic and out of touch. It's meant to show how the President, being completely protected form the effects of the nuclear war he helped bring into being, has no clue how truly bad things are, and how completely devastates the country is.
Reagan saw an early screening of this movie. It is one of the things which his diary and staff noted as motivating him to seek rapprochement with the Soviet Union and engaging in serious arms control talks.
Of course, this was much easier with Gorbachev than with someone like Andropov.
What, the President's speech? Yeah, that's definitely a testament to this film's accuracy: a President's only concern is his image. And now we have Obama...
I know..... that sermon segment was confusing. He may as well have asked for spam and virgins because God knows there weren't either around for miles. It is Kansas, after all.
and the fact it was even more pointless. Since 'God' had left the people of earth to suffer and die. My guess is a lot of people realized that if God were truly mercuful he would have spared them their terrible fate.
i think it was originally supposed to be 2 parts but abc decided that people didnt want to sit and watch nuclear holocaust and suffering for 2 days so u got radiation poisoning... sorry
From IMDB - When originally televised, the Presidential speech via radio was delivered by a voice actor who sounded much like Ronald Reagan. This speech was re-voiced by a different actor for the VHS/DVD releases and the version which airs on cable television.
I remembered this when I saw this sequence. Typical of the Ronny Raygun crowd to object to portraying their barbarity with that sort of realism.
That factoid is more funny because well he's the president at the time it's set in. It also sounds like the kind of thing Regan (or any prez) would say in that case.
When London was being bombed during the Blitz, the "leaders" were safe under 40' of concrete and breathing filtered air. Then they complained that civilians were using the Underground system as shelters. Deep level civilian shelters were only built after much protest.
and republicans dont defend america or legitimize having a 3rd term in office for the prosperity of our country. its not for the principles for which we stand, its not even for the religion they use to preach how only they can maintain those values, but they dont stand by them. They mock public service and any better of life besides their own. They stand by an ideology with no real philosophy attached to it, not a christian or small town people ideology, just the republican ideology for only that
I think the American ideals, the things that it supposedly stands for, are worthy and good. But what America actually stands for, or rather what the politicians actually stand for, are things quite different.
This part isn't working for some reason..only found that out after watching every other part but this one..had to skip it and keep going..remember seeing this when it came out on tv..I think part of what I missed was when they had that apocalpytic church service and the farmer's daughter fell out sick, and the air force guy died.
The U.S. is a great country, but it is as dirty as any other nation on the planet. With it's status as a superpower it is sometimes dirtier than most Americans would like to admit.
Agreed the president sounds like a douchebag, but what's the alternative? Fascism? Islamic sharia rule? Blame the political policies enforcing them, but not the ideals themselves.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So freedom and democracy are pathetic? I suggest that there are things in the world that would make life worse than living after a nuclear war.
Suppose that the enemy wasn't the Soviet Union, who some of you seem to think was this cuddly wonderland with free health care and education. Suppose the opponent in the cold war was a NAZI dominated Europe? I submit to you the post war life seen here is better than living under NAZI or Soviet rule.
No, what's pathetic is talking about freedom and democracy when the government's acting under emegency powers and using firing squads and summary executions to impose order.
What's pathetic is insisting that those ideals have been upheld internationally when they in fact no longer apply even domestically.
May I ask you suppose in the day after scenario Nato forces just laid down and let the soviet's win. How free and democractic would Europe be then? Is life under a dictatorship better than sacrifice for freedom?
Considering the soviet union imploded under perestroika in the 90's, I'd say it would have been 10 or 20 bad years and then things would be more or less the same, minus the European Union and probably the balkan wars would have gone a different way.
The problem here is in ideals yes, you're 100% right, but things don't quite work out the way they're supposed to in theory.
Not just your own selfish freedom but the freedom of our fellow men and the freedom of future generations of Americans? Is your or my life worth more than that? Were I not a TS I would make the choice someone in the military does to risk my life and give up my freedom so that you may be free.
Excuse me, but "selfish freedom" flew out the window once the government started rounding petty thieves up and shooting them or deciding who gets food and who doesn't. Soldiers as police, rationing, government control, there's a name for that: COMMUNISM.
If NATO "won", what makes you think that future generations would be free following a nuclear war? faith?
Let me get this straight. 20-30 years of soviet domination. A regime which made "enemies of the state" disappear, had slave labor camps for dissidents, "resettled" whole ethnic groups, and killed more people in death camps than the Nazi's right up to dissolution.... you would be ok with that?
Or are you just some fool who thinks communism is just about free college and healthcare. In such a state all people are property of the state, slaves.
I would not be ok with that. I would not be ok with global thermonuclear war either. That's the point. I believe the 20 or 30 years of soviet rule, while absolutely horrible, would still not even compare to the effects of a global nuclear exchange in casualties, suffering, economic and environmental costs and (ironically) loss of freedom.
Regardless of who "wins" a nuclear war, it would be the end of our society, I.E. the end of the freedom and democracy that were supposed to be preserved.
Hm, your description sounds a lot like pretty much any Western nation, and any other 'civilization' for that matter... scary to think this sick evil is in all peoples.
The world would never be the same after an attack of this magnetude, when (if ever) there is a reconstuction of civilization, it will take another 2 or 3 ceturies (mybe more) to even get back to were we were in 1950
it might not be that severe. Today nuclear arsenals are smaller, and the emphasis is on ultra-accurate strikes on military targets, not this sort of indiscriminate destruction. Still, there's no such thing as a "small" nuclear war - there'd still be terrible casualties
@sinusbradycardia The way to win a nuclear war is the way we did....deter it and never have it. Won't work with crazies though....Iran I mean.

sinusbradycardia 2 months ago in playlist day after
@sinusbradycardia The Soviets had a nuclear survivability philosophy.

As I recall, it was Reagan's voice, or someone's imitation of it, that was used in the President's radio address in the original airing of this show. Somehow, as I remember it, it sounded lest stridently proud than this remake's President's voice does.

Jacktwo04 2 years ago 7
In a MAD global thermonuclear war, it doesn't really matter who strikes first. Hat's off to Meyer for not making either side the "good guy".
tuttt99 2 years ago 2
The radio address is an interesting one. On one hand it sounds ridiculous after such a devastating conflagration for the President to say we are still the leader of the free world when millions of Americans are dead and dying. On the other hand as a survivor wouldn't you want the President to convey strength and confidence? Anyone else have an opinion?
Jacktwo04 2 years ago
@Jacktwo04 I agree with that. The question becomes how many US lives will we sacrifice for France and Great Britan? In many realistic scenarios of ww3 those nations would have used tactical nukes against the Soviet armies. Unlike us they would be staring down the barrels of T72 tank guns, and communist oppression.
When it comes to this topic there are two kinds, those who say liberty or death, and those who say not in the face.

How do you have a cease fire when you have no weapons or manpower to fight the enemy for many years to come?
I seriously doubt that the President would give the speech that's given in this movie, though.
WTCTribute 3 years ago
I think that's the entire point of including this speech in the movie; it's supposed to be unrealistic and out of touch. It's meant to show how the President, being completely protected form the effects of the nuclear war he helped bring into being, has no clue how truly bad things are, and how completely devastates the country is.
n0oneimportant 2 years ago 21
Wow; someone who gets it. You're right; that was the entire point of this sequence.
lothartheterrible 2 years ago 6
@n0oneimportant
Reagan saw an early screening of this movie. It is one of the things which his diary and staff noted as motivating him to seek rapprochement with the Soviet Union and engaging in serious arms control talks.
Of course, this was much easier with Gorbachev than with someone like Andropov.

How right you are.
When London was being bombed during the Blitz, the "leaders" were safe under 40' of concrete and breathing filtered air. Then they complained that civilians were using the Underground system as shelters. Deep level civilian shelters were only built after much protest.
It would be the same today.

and republicans dont defend america or legitimize having a 3rd term in office for the prosperity of our country. its not for the principles for which we stand, its not even for the religion they use to preach how only they can maintain those values, but they dont stand by them. They mock public service and any better of life besides their own. They stand by an ideology with no real philosophy attached to it, not a christian or small town people ideology, just the republican ideology for only that

Humanity has survived worse things.
BrendaQG 3 years ago
No, what's pathetic is talking about freedom and democracy when the government's acting under emegency powers and using firing squads and summary executions to impose order.
What's pathetic is insisting that those ideals have been upheld internationally when they in fact no longer apply even domestically.
Wafflepudding 3 years ago
May I ask you suppose in the day after scenario Nato forces just laid down and let the soviet's win. How free and democractic would Europe be then? Is life under a dictatorship better than sacrifice for freedom?
BrendaQG 3 years ago
Considering the soviet union imploded under perestroika in the 90's, I'd say it would have been 10 or 20 bad years and then things would be more or less the same, minus the European Union and probably the balkan wars would have gone a different way.
The problem here is in ideals yes, you're 100% right, but things don't quite work out the way they're supposed to in theory.
Wafflepudding 3 years ago
Not just your own selfish freedom but the freedom of our fellow men and the freedom of future generations of Americans? Is your or my life worth more than that? Were I not a TS I would make the choice someone in the military does to risk my life and give up my freedom so that you may be free.
I guess it's all just a matter of perspective.
BrendaQG 3 years ago
Excuse me, but "selfish freedom" flew out the window once the government started rounding petty thieves up and shooting them or deciding who gets food and who doesn't. Soldiers as police, rationing, government control, there's a name for that: COMMUNISM.
If NATO "won", what makes you think that future generations would be free following a nuclear war? faith?
Wafflepudding 3 years ago
What are you communist or something?
Let me get this straight. 20-30 years of soviet domination. A regime which made "enemies of the state" disappear, had slave labor camps for dissidents, "resettled" whole ethnic groups, and killed more people in death camps than the Nazi's right up to dissolution.... you would be ok with that?
Or are you just some fool who thinks communism is just about free college and healthcare. In such a state all people are property of the state, slaves.
BrendaQG 3 years ago
I would not be ok with that. I would not be ok with global thermonuclear war either. That's the point. I believe the 20 or 30 years of soviet rule, while absolutely horrible, would still not even compare to the effects of a global nuclear exchange in casualties, suffering, economic and environmental costs and (ironically) loss of freedom.
Regardless of who "wins" a nuclear war, it would be the end of our society, I.E. the end of the freedom and democracy that were supposed to be preserved.
Wafflepudding 3 years ago

it might not be that severe. Today nuclear arsenals are smaller, and the emphasis is on ultra-accurate strikes on military targets, not this sort of indiscriminate destruction. Still, there's no such thing as a "small" nuclear war - there'd still be terrible casualties
