Who's fault is it kids don't get a good education? Who fails to teach basics before kindergarten? Who doesn't enforce a bedtime in elementary and lets them run the streets in high school? Who won't make sure they do their homework? Who complains to the principal when a teacher is tough? Who has no books in their home? Who watches Jersey Shore at home instead of NatGeo/ Discovery/ History Channnel?
Realizing the American dream doesn't have anything to do with the sorry government schools. So many people just have so little gumption to better themselves. My wife and I homeschooled our children, so they would get an *education*. Don't look to the government to do anything well for you.
Vouchers do not lead to freedom of education and school choice, only tax credits for education can provide freedom of education because you have total control over the education because it is your money. Vouchers are just hall passes from the master to go to your room of choice, which they then can control legally because it is no longer your money and they can have all the say of what goes on in that school, then its no longer your choice of what you get, all you did was abolish private schools
@MrApplewine - You don't understand School Vouchers at all. Nor are tax credits what you think they are. Vouchers are NOT "hall passes" at all. You're completely wrong. Vouchers allow someone to attend any school, even online schools for home schoolers.
There is nothing more "choice" than that. Tax credits would allow illegals to get schooling here. They shouldn't. They should be thrown out on their asses.
The public education system, much like the welfare state and Roe v. Wade has made it hard on minorities. It shouldn't surprise anyone that more blacks are aborted per capita than any other ethnic group since Roe v. Wade, more blacks are born out-of-wedlock since LBJ's war poverty and test scores for blacks have fallen since 1996. The public education system is destroying them. Why then, are Democrats generally against school choice?
@TravistheHuman No Obama is anti-choice. The very first thing Obama did when he was elected was to defund the DC voucher program for the sake of the teachers union. Obama has supported unions in every way, good or bad.
US Democrats treat Blacks much like the Hamas treats the people of Gaza, or Robert Mugabe treats Zimbabwe. They realise that a good education system and economic prosperity are the biggest threat to their power monopoly, and therefore they need to be held down by force.
In Africa and in the middle east this is done by brutallity & violence. In the US this is done by unions & organisations who claim to be 'for the good of the people', but really are the complete opposite,
Studies show that in the same so called "underfunded" schools with predominate blacks, Latinos & Asians. The Asians excel while the AA students don't. So the excuse for AA's is always "inequality, underfunding" as for why they can't keep up. But in the same schools other minorities do well. Go figure
@abexylol I recognize her from MSNBC where she takes very anti-liberty positions all the time. She may be slightly to the right of many of the MSNBC talking heads, but she's always come across as a cultural-marxist / leftist. I've never once seen her challenge any of the extreme statist crap spewed on that channel.
@OneCerebralSamurai Hahah ok, I was afraid you ment it was because she was black. I see your point, but interviewing people of all opinions is natural for any magazine. One wonders why she would be at FreedomFest though, indeed.
@abexylol I wouldn't care if she were green with purple stripes. It just surprised me that someone would consistently express such anti-liberty views on cable TV, and then show up at FreedomFest. Maybe she was gathering intelligence on the opposition?
.... or maybe she actually is a closet Libertarian who just says statist crap on TV because of the attention and money?
There is a reason american colleges are world renown learning centers, and american public schools are terrible. It's precisely because we operate our colleges on a voucher system (scholarships), while we run our k-12 schools based on government central planning. Liberals are so blinded by hatred of "rich people" that they would rather ruin their child's education than allow anyone to make money.

That's not freedom; she's just someone who wants government to force her views on everyone else. She's not quite a libertarian yet!
