One would hope? It's fine with me that you hope. Misleading people is not appreciated. I wouldn't have commented in the first place, but there seems to be a growing practice to con people into watching uninteresting videos. There is no other way to fight this dishonesty, than to post comments complaining about it. It also gives other folks being served the ol' bait and switch a little heads up.
Why the hell do you pretend that 7 uTube clips are to be associated with Christopher Hitchens, when only a portion of one has him speaking? Rather misleading, and in the end, a rip off.
@mu99ins One would hope that people come to these videos for inspiration and intellectual growth rather than following something akin to a celebrities "cult of personality". While Hitchen's was indeed only in one of the videos, I am sure he would appreciate people watching the entirety of the series in order to fully grasp the event.
While Hitchens was indeed a character and interesting; his message, ideas and then debates are what I am sure he would want others to take interest in.
I hate it when people claim that without religion, you wouldn't have art or beauty. Art and poetry may be "irrational", but they don't conflict with truth and logic.
the first 2 apologists were ok.. but the last guy... he should've just stopped talking after about a minute because he sauntered vaguely downward into fiercer illogic therafter
You know what gives me hope? it´s the fact that the vast majority of comments form a kind of consensus in wanting to be rid of religion. I know it´s not exactly scientific, but it makes me feel better.
i think i may have thought of a sentence which ruins the last speaker's nearly entire argument so i'll understandably share you confused philosophy with religion
Don't be so sure. Racism, like all superficial and fabricated categorizations, are shelter for the mind. By separating you from what you think you're better than, they tend to make you more afraid of it. The world is a scary place for a racist in a ways that don't even occur to a reasonable person.
I think religion plays a broader but similar role.
4:55 "[our non-arguments] overreach the boundaries of science, and this is not a deficiency in our reason, but a deficiency in science"
I guess it's also a deficiency in physiology that we can't measure Thetans or Chi, or possessive demons, a deficiency in physics that we can't detect magic, a deficiency in chemistry that alchemy eludes us.
6:17 "For most people, religion is what it has always been; a cultivation of piety, -etc-"
Take out the '-ivation of piety' and you have the right answer.
The speaker might have a point if morals, aesthetics, and wonder depend on a belief in supernatural propositions, but they don't, and therefore his speech is utter piffle. An atheist can have all those things, and so what does religion actually add except dogmatic fanaticism?
Oh, I know - I grew up with this trite. I just thought that the 'best' would be better. I keep thinking that I might actually encounter a decent argument from the religious side, but I'm constantly dissapointed. These arguments are the epitome of empty reasoning.

Sounds almost like the religious people are almost arguing their own point.

That last speaker needs to look up the definition of a fallacy before he ever opens his mouth again.

This debate format is new to me. Not a big fan, but I did enjoy the arguments. I just don't see what the point is of an argument without arguing.

I cannot BELIEVE this is the best that the religious side has to offer for arguments. How pathetic.

That's what happens when your perspective depends on a suspension of reason.
