Young girls (inarticulate ones it must also be said) in particular use 'gay' all the time in this context. There is a 20 year old in my class at TAFE who uses it frequently. I'm not in the least bit offended (as a gay male) as it's an indictment on her intellect and vocabulary, not my sexuality.

Even if the girl had meant homosexual, the word "gay" is not derogatory and does not belong in the same category as that "N-word" everybody refers to, but doesn't have the guts to say. It's always disconcerting to know that schools feel inclined to punish people for having certain preferences and stating opinions, since that would be contrary to the principles of a democracy.
