What the cat is doing is called "kneading". It's a residual behavior from when they were kittens. Baby kittens knead their mother's stomach when they want milk (to stimulate the milk flow at the nipple), so when they do it to other animals/humans, they are expressing a feeling of comfort and peace that they associate with their mother. Cats knead naturally to soften what they're going to sleep on.
