@wuzupyt You can use any camera to shoot a film really, even a phone camera if need be haha. But anyways yeah it's a great camera to shot a film with. around $4000.
Great video. I went with the Sony NX5U recently over the Z5U because the NX5U has HD-SDI out. In retrospect, I wish I had bought the Z5U with the optional Flash unit instead. I miss being able to archive on tape.
@BlockBillionaireTV Keep in mind your watching a compressed video on youtube, other than that, yes it still yields a very nice image despite the HDV compression. In the end it's all up to the person behind the camera.
@jjho8 It is still a very nice picture, im just trying to upgrade from the hvr hd1000u and I dont know where to go, unless I spend a extra 3 or even 4 thousand dollars. because everything in the in 2,000 3,500 price rang seems the same. and yes youtube is the master of screwing up the full quality of my videos too!
Hey I'm thinking about buying this camera here soon... I wish I knew more about all this HD stuff though. If you record this in 1080p onto miniDV tapes, a) how much record time do you get out of a 60min tape? b) when it is compressed to MPEG-2, how much does this affect the video quality? Will it still look 1080pHD on a 60" 1080p LED?
Anyhow, sorry to bother u with Q's, I really think you did a good job on this video. I know it's just a test, but u made that dog look like a star!
@thorpism You cant record full 1080 onto an HDV tape it's HDV compression not really HD instead of 1920 by 1080 which is HD, HDV records in 1440 by 1080. You do loose some quality when compressing to H.264. I can record around 60min I believe. It does look nice on a full HD TV, HDV is nice.
Thanks for the reply... It's been a tough journey trying to figure out what camera to buy with the budget I have (~$2800). I think I have actually decided on the Panasonic AG-HMC150 though. Do you have any thoughts about that?
@thorpism I like the HMC, it's a nice camera, only thing that bugs me out with it is the low resolution LCD screen, it's hard to get critical focus with it, but other than that it's a great camera.
@xXKwikKillerXx HDV tapes are around $8 each. You will need an editing program and a fire wire 400 cable to capture the footage from the tape to the computer. The Z5U produces relatively good Blacks keep in mind it's an HDV compression so your loosing color and detail. The blacks and shadow areas do become noisy at times but it's forgivable.

I want that camera (or other semi-pro camcorders) but it costs a lot and my parents recently bought a Panasonic SDR-85k (which is consumer grade) for me to use. I am like 14 and I know quite a bit about editing and filming (above several teens my age) and I could make something like your STUNNING (reallly, it's pretty nice) video (you should make some more like that) but it would require using manual focus, which takes forever on my camcorder. I would say that I am ameteur with a consumer camera
@TheDailyNewsPost The camera is only a tool, what is most important is how you use that tool to tell your story. I started like you, shot a feature film with my handycam in high school, work with what you have, and tell great stories.
@jjho8 agreed. I like to go full manual on my camcorder but it takes forever (a long time) to get to the right settings. With a Pro One, you just gotta turn it's dedicated dial. A University Professor said to me that they (the universities) are looking for people like me and others that start off now (Filming stuff or just your possible future career).
Hello my friend. I might seem really naive, but really how does this camera differ from a regular consumer video cam like the ones you find at bestbuy. @VideoDocR First off with cameras like the z5U you have better ergonomics and manual control. thats it, its the manual control, iris rings, focus rings, easy to hold and operate. Small handy cams such as the ones at best buy are difficult to manually control. the look of operating a small camera and a big camera is also another thing. Most consumer handycams (Except the canon hv30 and a few others) don't offer 24p recording. There's also very little if no manual audio control on handycams.
@VideoDocR You see now, the Pro Camcorders offer Full Maual Control, Adjustments at will work fast and the zoom lens are usually better than consumer ones (10x-25x/sony-panasonic) and the quality is much better because it's on a HD MiniDV tape which has no compression (digital, consumer ones that write onto DVDs, SD cards and HDDs) so there is no dropouts or drop in quality. There is a reason why Pros use them, same in movie sets!
would you mind posting the exact camera settings you used when filming these shots? im starting a film soon with the Sony Z5U, and any advice on getting close to that "film look" would be greatly appreciated :)
Ah man I really want this camera. The problem is that I'm 14 but I don't want my parents to pay for it. It's gonna take me a couple of years to save up… It's such a beautiful camera.
@555KnotFan666 Don't worry about getting a camera right away, I'm sure by the time you save up there will be another camera out which will be amazing, if you want check out the Canon Rebel T2i it is only $800 for the body, and it has an
APS-C sensor, which is about the same size as 35mm motion picture film, so you will get the Depth of Field of 35mm motion picture film.
@jjho8 I'm sorry to hear about that. Well I live in Saudi Arabia so it's a lot more expensive because they have to import it. I dunno, I'll check when I go to America some time.
@555KnotFan666 yeah ur just like me im 15 and i dont want my mom to pay for cause my dad past away so im trying to see when i move now on august to florida if i can get a job but it cost 2,750.00 dollas theres another one almost the same and cost 1,650.oo dollars so im no sure what to do i think ill go with the cheaper one :D
Do u recomend this camera for documentaries? Sorry for asking so much. New at this. I've been reading books about filming for a year. But they are a little outdated.
Sweet video man. I'm looking to get one of these cameras. I've been writing and getting together every detail down to start filming a documentary about my gang invested cen cal city. What's a decent editing program? How much?
@drewdownq I use Final Cut Pro, it can run you around $800. There's also another good program that recently came out Adobe CS5 wich can run you around $750.
Aye Justin just a quick question.Would you get the same quality if you use a Memory Card instead of DV tape (assuming you already have an optional hardware that enables memory stick card recording)? sorry im kind of new to this thing.
Hey, I just bought this same camera, Great footage! For the slow motion water faucet, how did you shoot this in camera to make it so smooth in slow motion?
@cheezlos The camera has a slow motion function in it. Depending on how long you record the slow motion for, the quality for 3 second recording is standard Definition upresed to HD.
wow, very nice video! I love the quality of this cam, I wish I had enough money to buy it. The music is also very nice, it fits the video. Did you work on the color with a video-program or is this a setting of the cam?
@xStraightEdgexH20 Motion picture film is shot at 24 frames per second, 24p is 24 progressive frames per second (If you really want to get into detail it's actually 23.98 frames per second). a normal consumer handycam will shoot at 60i, which is something like 30 frames per second interlaced together to create a really smooth image. 24p is not a smooth image, the motion blur (As long as you keep the shutter angle at 180 degrees) is similar to film.
glad to hear an opinon from a guy whos reel looks like this. Try and post some dslr footage sometime so I can get a look at it if you cant. Thanks man.
@ledz2032 It does marvelous things for its price, you just have to be aware of the limitations. I've worked with the Canon 7D, and I loved it! I believe the benefits outweigh the flaws. But then again for there price, its pretty marvelous. Although I wouldn't pay 5,000 for a DSLR that shoots video. I love the shallow depth of field that they provide, and there small size makes them unique. So no I dont think they're a hype, they're the beginning of a whole new generation of digital video.
@jjho8 I'm im the same boat, tossing up between a z5u or going for the other team and getting a canon 5d mark II... ahhh dicisions and it's a hard one.. (intend to shoot documentaries and nature footage, interviews etc)
@mervyn2316 I've seen many documentaries shot with the 5D and 7D. The only problem I'd say for the DSLRs is that you can only record for up to 10 minutes, or the sensor will overheat, and you'll have to stop filming and wait for it to cool (The camera lets you know when it's overheating) so for long interviews, it might get cut off (My friend had a problem like that). And as for nature footage, it's great!
sorry for all the questions, but I also bout a memory stick duo to use with it but I cant figure out how to record unto it. Do you have any experience with this?
@jbedford27 Unfortunately I don't know, I don't know if you can even record onto it, think it's just for photos. Sorry. Let me know if you do figure out a way to record onto it. But I really don't think you can. I've just never tried before.
@jjho8 get a cf adapter and cf card with more than 2GB. you should be able to record straight onto it then. solid state recording is probably the wisest way to go
would you r ecommend this camera for an indie film production? Aside from the fixed zoom lens, it seems pretty sharp. How does it look outside of compressed files?
@ledz2032 Yeah, why not, people are using DSLRs to shoot films now, so Z5U should be fine haha. When I hooked it up to my HDTV to use as a monitor, video coming strait out of the camera, it looked great. Of course though it records onto HDV or CF (If you buy the external unit) and HDV is pretty heavily compressed, and I think its AVCHD compression for the CF cards, not sure. But yeah I believe the Z5U is more than capable of handling an indie short, I've shot many shorts with it and a feature
I enjoyed your imagery! did you get that sort of Sepia color/tone from a basic setting or was it from a preset picture profile? maybe done in fcp? I recently got the z5u and have been struggling to get the picture I want. just curious.. thanks!
@python1024 Thanks, its something I used to do a while ago before I found out about color correction in post. For this test video I didn't want to color correct anything in post, wanted to show the image directly from the camera, so I reverted back to the "old school" ways.
Connected my camera to my computer via fire wire 400 cable, opened up final cut pro and went to log and capture, just have to make sure your capture settings are set to HDV. When exporting to the video to an MP4 file for youtube I've recently been using this program MPEG streamclip.
The XL2 is a great camera, but I'd say get the z5u because it is HD (Well actually HDV which isn't really true HD because of the compression, thats a whole other story.)
For me, yes! I love it. It is not a camera to have fun with... Well sure you can have fun with it, what I'm trying to say, is that it's not very portable, I did it a few times, were I walked around the city with my z5u filming stuff, you do draw a lot of attention. If your just looking for a camera to film inconspicuously I'd say check out the canon 7D or 5D.
ahh i think i know what you mean. because i like to bring my current camcorder around with me all the time and film random stuff at school and all that. i can tell that with a bigger camera like the Z5U it would be inconvenient to bring around.
im still interested in getting it, though. for big projects and stuff like that. what camera did you use for your 'Sincere' video?
Thanks, the Z5U has a standard 1/3rd censor, nothing special. It's the framing, plus focal length, and aperture size that can give you nice shallow depth of field on such a small censor, I'm sure with enough practice you can pull it off with your VX.
can u tell me a good video camra that is very protable, fast, small. and so on. cuz i want it to fit in my pocket but still be a awsome camra ,one of the best..
Yeah I believe so the FX 1000 is basically the same camera as the z5u, just minus the XLR imports and a spot in the back to hook up the optional CF card reader.
I am sorry that knowledge escapes me, all I know is that the camera is advertised as shooting 1080p24, and it does shoot 1080i at 24p I edit in a 24p 1080p timeline and export as 1080p. When exporting to youtube how ever I export as an MP4 720p. It shoots with the HDV compression onto an HDV (or if you want a regular DV) tape.
In menu go to IN/OUT REC, go to HDV PROGRE., From there you can select interlaced which allows for 30i, 24i, 60i, and 24A. Or you can go to progressive which allows you to shoot 24p or 30p.
The higher the frame rate the better the slow motion. 60i isn't really a frame rate, i stands for interlaced which is 60 interleaved fields that are shown together in one second for smoother video. So actually 60i is 30 frames a second. I don't recall what 24a is though. I just stick with 24p. But for slow motion I utilize the slow mo function in the z5 which does require you to shoot in 60i.
This camera from what I remember the v1u has a smaller 1/4th sensor. Always try to go for the bigger sensor, better low light, and a shallower depth of field, still 1/3 doesn't provide the best shallow depth of field, but its still a step up from a small 1/4th sensor.
You can use the same compact flash recorder that you would use for the Z5, but you can't connect it to the back of the FX 1000. You will have to probably mount it on top of the FX 1000 and use the provided cable to connect to the camera.
hey, i am gonna be ordering the z5u soon and i was wondering how do u make only certain things in focus. cuz all of the cameras i have used focus the whole image.
Make sure your on manual focus, I usually zoom in compressing the background with the subject it allows for more control over the depth of field with the small sensor on this camera. I also keep my iris wide opened.
I have this camera, and am new to it. Please describe the best settings and workflow to get the highest quality, quickest loading hd youtube video. maybe 2 minutes long. I can't seem to get the right settings. any help would be MOST appreciated. Your videos are great by the way.
Nice images... nice content... great quality there.
Where you fixing any lighting for these shots... any of them? Where you shooting to tape?
I do pretty much all non-profit type work (see my youtube account for some media), and have been looking to get this cam for some time now - seems just out of my reach though (budgets and all that good stuff). Howbeit, all that said, you have any recommendations for sellers?
i hope you dont mind me asking, but , can someone explain how the minDV tapes work? when you record on a digital camera i know that each video is seperate, is that the same with a miniDV? and is it all digital?
all digital, but no not separate. You have to rewind and fast forward to find what you want like VHS. But all digital so think digital meets VHS. It is tape after all.
uh... not totally sure what you mean i think. Its just like recording on VHS whereas you could tape over your footage and what not but its mega high quality. and to put on a computer you plug it in via firewire and then capture the footage. So if you have an hour of footage on the tape it takes an hour to capture.
YES! You can buy an external unit for the Z5U that records onto a compact flash card, so you don't have to capture footage, but it's like another $1000.
hey dude quick question ..i have the same camera but i usually shot in dv and i shot some fotage in hd but i have no idea how to capture it .... i use final cut pro 5.1 and i have a firewire cable
So Pro!

mmm idk. I can get the same effect with the half priced NEX VG10 and a good lens. Especially if i'm doing bokeh shots.
The Z5 really shines when it comes to wide shots though, something this video doesn't really show you.
The extra sharpness kicks the VG10s butt there. BUT with a good Carl Zeiss the VG10 can close the gap and produce near identical results.
I'd recommend that you look at the VG10 or NXcam first if you like this kinda film style

@jjho8 I'm sorry to hear about that. Well I live in Saudi Arabia so it's a lot more expensive because they have to import it. I dunno, I'll check when I go to America some time.

Do u recomend this camera for documentaries? Sorry for asking so much. New at this. I've been reading books about filming for a year. But they are a little outdated.

@drewdownq Yes I would definitely recommend this camera for documentaries!

@drewdownq Yes I would definitely recommend this camera for documentaries!
jjho8 1 year ago
Sweet video man. I'm looking to get one of these cameras. I've been writing and getting together every detail down to start filming a documentary about my gang invested cen cal city. What's a decent editing program? How much?
drewdownq 1 year ago
@drewdownq I use Final Cut Pro, it can run you around $800. There's also another good program that recently came out Adobe CS5 wich can run you around $750.

Aye Justin just a quick question.Would you get the same quality if you use a Memory Card instead of DV tape (assuming you already have an optional hardware that enables memory stick card recording)? sorry im kind of new to this thing.
TONGANMUViiEZ 1 year ago
@TONGANMUViiEZ You should get the same exact quality if your recording onto a CF Card.
jjho8 1 year ago
Hey, I just bought this same camera, Great footage! For the slow motion water faucet, how did you shoot this in camera to make it so smooth in slow motion?
cheezlos 1 year ago
@cheezlos The camera has a slow motion function in it. Depending on how long you record the slow motion for, the quality for 3 second recording is standard Definition upresed to HD.
jjho8 1 year ago
wow, very nice video! I love the quality of this cam, I wish I had enough money to buy it. The music is also very nice, it fits the video. Did you work on the color with a video-program or is this a setting of the cam?

@TurkishCowboy84 There was no color correction done in post, everything was done in camera.

jjho8 1 year ago
can you please explain what shooting in 24p visually changes for people to see?
xStraightEdgexH20 1 year ago
@xStraightEdgexH20 Motion picture film is shot at 24 frames per second, 24p is 24 progressive frames per second (If you really want to get into detail it's actually 23.98 frames per second). a normal consumer handycam will shoot at 60i, which is something like 30 frames per second interlaced together to create a really smooth image. 24p is not a smooth image, the motion blur (As long as you keep the shutter angle at 180 degrees) is similar to film.

@ledz2032My next reel will have some canon 7D footage in it. I should have a new reel up sometime before august.
jjho8 1 year ago
speaking of dslrs... canon d5 mark ii, Is it just hype?
ledz2032 1 year ago
@ledz2032 It does marvelous things for its price, you just have to be aware of the limitations. I've worked with the Canon 7D, and I loved it! I believe the benefits outweigh the flaws. But then again for there price, its pretty marvelous. Although I wouldn't pay 5,000 for a DSLR that shoots video. I love the shallow depth of field that they provide, and there small size makes them unique. So no I dont think they're a hype, they're the beginning of a whole new generation of digital video.
jjho8 1 year ago
@jjho8 I'm im the same boat, tossing up between a z5u or going for the other team and getting a canon 5d mark II... ahhh dicisions and it's a hard one.. (intend to shoot documentaries and nature footage, interviews etc)
mervyn2316 1 year ago
@mervyn2316 I've seen many documentaries shot with the 5D and 7D. The only problem I'd say for the DSLRs is that you can only record for up to 10 minutes, or the sensor will overheat, and you'll have to stop filming and wait for it to cool (The camera lets you know when it's overheating) so for long interviews, it might get cut off (My friend had a problem like that). And as for nature footage, it's great!
jjho8 1 year ago
sorry for all the questions, but I also bout a memory stick duo to use with it but I cant figure out how to record unto it. Do you have any experience with this?
jbedford27 1 year ago
@jbedford27 Unfortunately I don't know, I don't know if you can even record onto it, think it's just for photos. Sorry. Let me know if you do figure out a way to record onto it. But I really don't think you can. I've just never tried before.
jjho8 1 year ago
@jjho8 get a cf adapter and cf card with more than 2GB. you should be able to record straight onto it then. solid state recording is probably the wisest way to go
ImHomeAtLast 1 year ago
@ImHomeAtLast Agreed.

thanks it definitely worked. the manual was confusing me cuz it was saying to go under one of the greyed out menu options
jbedford27 1 year ago

jjho8 1 year ago
would you r ecommend this camera for an indie film production? Aside from the fixed zoom lens, it seems pretty sharp. How does it look outside of compressed files?
ledz2032 1 year ago
@ledz2032 Yeah, why not, people are using DSLRs to shoot films now, so Z5U should be fine haha. When I hooked it up to my HDTV to use as a monitor, video coming strait out of the camera, it looked great. Of course though it records onto HDV or CF (If you buy the external unit) and HDV is pretty heavily compressed, and I think its AVCHD compression for the CF cards, not sure. But yeah I believe the Z5U is more than capable of handling an indie short, I've shot many shorts with it and a feature
jjho8 1 year ago
@jjho8 But I do find that the HDV compression is still not horrible.

hey i just got my hvr z5u, how do u set it to shoot 1080p? i looked in the manual and i feel like its missing that option under in/out rec
jbedford27 1 year ago
@jbedford27 In menu, go to IN/OUT REC then scroll down to HDV PROGRE. go into that then click PROGRESSIVE, and in there you can select 24p or 30p
jjho8 1 year ago
I enjoyed your imagery! did you get that sort of Sepia color/tone from a basic setting or was it from a preset picture profile? maybe done in fcp? I recently got the z5u and have been struggling to get the picture I want. just curious.. thanks!
python1024 1 year ago
@python1024 Thanks, the Sepia color/tone was done in camera by white balancing on the color light blue instead of white.
jjho8 1 year ago
@jjho8 Thanks! cool technique
python1024 1 year ago
@python1024 Thanks, its something I used to do a while ago before I found out about color correction in post. For this test video I didn't want to color correct anything in post, wanted to show the image directly from the camera, so I reverted back to the "old school" ways.

C2567 1 year ago
Connected my camera to my computer via fire wire 400 cable, opened up final cut pro and went to log and capture, just have to make sure your capture settings are set to HDV. When exporting to the video to an MP4 file for youtube I've recently been using this program MPEG streamclip.

should i get the Canon Xl2 or the Sony hvr-z5u...for filming movies?
DaLaughFiend 2 years ago
The XL2 is a great camera, but I'd say get the z5u because it is HD (Well actually HDV which isn't really true HD because of the compression, thats a whole other story.)
jjho8 1 year ago
I'm planning on getting this camera, was it worth the money for you?
YVPrecise 2 years ago
For me, yes! I love it. It is not a camera to have fun with... Well sure you can have fun with it, what I'm trying to say, is that it's not very portable, I did it a few times, were I walked around the city with my z5u filming stuff, you do draw a lot of attention. If your just looking for a camera to film inconspicuously I'd say check out the canon 7D or 5D.
jjho8 2 years ago
ahh i think i know what you mean. because i like to bring my current camcorder around with me all the time and film random stuff at school and all that. i can tell that with a bigger camera like the Z5U it would be inconvenient to bring around.
im still interested in getting it, though. for big projects and stuff like that. what camera did you use for your 'Sincere' video?
YVPrecise 2 years ago
I shot Sincere with the z5u.
jjho8 2 years ago
The depth of field is amazing, I wish my VX was that good. The slow motion setting looks great as well.
arejay330 2 years ago
Thanks, the Z5U has a standard 1/3rd censor, nothing special. It's the framing, plus focal length, and aperture size that can give you nice shallow depth of field on such a small censor, I'm sure with enough practice you can pull it off with your VX.
jjho8 2 years ago
can u tell me a good video camra that is very protable, fast, small. and so on. cuz i want it to fit in my pocket but still be a awsome camra ,one of the best..
GamEfreakStunter 2 years ago
Canon 5D MKii, Canon 7D, or the new much cheeper Canon
Canon T2i EOS 550D. There all DSLR's with video functions what makes them so amazing is there large censors look into them.

So could this beautiful image be achieved with an FX1000? I want to buy an FX1000, but if it can't get shots like these, I want the Z5!
californiafamous 2 years ago
Yeah I believe so the FX 1000 is basically the same camera as the z5u, just minus the XLR imports and a spot in the back to hook up the optional CF card reader.
jjho8 2 years ago
Does this camera give you the full 1000 lines in normal light or just 800?
bumtownv2 2 years ago
I am sorry that knowledge escapes me, all I know is that the camera is advertised as shooting 1080p24, and it does shoot 1080i at 24p I edit in a 24p 1080p timeline and export as 1080p. When exporting to youtube how ever I export as an MP4 720p. It shoots with the HDV compression onto an HDV (or if you want a regular DV) tape.
jjho8 2 years ago
ist this cam better than the fx1000 or similar ..
this has amazing colors but the fx1000 too or not ?
Alentejanito 2 years ago
It's very similar, on doesn't have xlr ports or a part in the back to connect the optional card reader. the same lens and chip.

and testing it in low lights, I get some grainy picture.

wer do i check my 30 or 60i ? help
Crystapure 2 years ago
In menu go to IN/OUT REC, go to HDV PROGRE., From there you can select interlaced which allows for 30i, 24i, 60i, and 24A. Or you can go to progressive which allows you to shoot 24p or 30p.
jjho8 2 years ago
so... the higher the number the better for slow motion ?
60i ?
whats 24a ? sorry for asking much. thanks
thanks again
Crystapure 2 years ago
The higher the frame rate the better the slow motion. 60i isn't really a frame rate, i stands for interlaced which is 60 interleaved fields that are shown together in one second for smoother video. So actually 60i is 30 frames a second. I don't recall what 24a is though. I just stick with 24p. But for slow motion I utilize the slow mo function in the z5 which does require you to shoot in 60i.
jjho8 2 years ago
Very nice image quality, does it have on board XLR?
SonicOrbStudios 2 years ago
Yes.
jjho8 2 years ago
Not depending on the price, would you prefer this camera or a V1U?
ktm016 2 years ago
This camera from what I remember the v1u has a smaller 1/4th sensor. Always try to go for the bigger sensor, better low light, and a shallower depth of field, still 1/3 doesn't provide the best shallow depth of field, but its still a step up from a small 1/4th sensor.
jjho8 2 years ago
Can i buy a recording kit like Compact Flash thing ? I have a similar cam like that its FX 1000
Crystapure 2 years ago
You can use the same compact flash recorder that you would use for the Z5, but you can't connect it to the back of the FX 1000. You will have to probably mount it on top of the FX 1000 and use the provided cable to connect to the camera.
jjho8 2 years ago
hey, i am gonna be ordering the z5u soon and i was wondering how do u make only certain things in focus. cuz all of the cameras i have used focus the whole image.
Nicknfs11 2 years ago
Make sure your on manual focus, I usually zoom in compressing the background with the subject it allows for more control over the depth of field with the small sensor on this camera. I also keep my iris wide opened.
jjho8 2 years ago
I have this camera, and am new to it. Please describe the best settings and workflow to get the highest quality, quickest loading hd youtube video. maybe 2 minutes long. I can't seem to get the right settings. any help would be MOST appreciated. Your videos are great by the way.

hey dude i use a hvr-z5u to work on my wedding staff. but i haven't been able to find the slow mo setting.. i lower the slow-shutter but no dice ..
HoustonStudioPro 2 years ago
You have to change the rec settings to 60i. in menu go to camera set, and click on SMTH SLW REC
jjho8 2 years ago
Nice images... nice content... great quality there.
Where you fixing any lighting for these shots... any of them? Where you shooting to tape?
I do pretty much all non-profit type work (see my youtube account for some media), and have been looking to get this cam for some time now - seems just out of my reach though (budgets and all that good stuff). Howbeit, all that said, you have any recommendations for sellers?
seeinglight 2 years ago
Did you add any external color correction, or is this what it looked like when you shot it?
OwenageReviews 2 years ago
No color grading this is all raw footage right out of the camera.
jjho8 2 years ago
nice footage, i quick question - i thought the 25p was suppose to give 'the film look', but youve shot on 24p - what is the difference?
DJFullNelson 2 years ago
25p is the frame rate they film with in Europe. 24p is only the USA.
jjho8 2 years ago
i hope you dont mind me asking, but , can someone explain how the minDV tapes work? when you record on a digital camera i know that each video is seperate, is that the same with a miniDV? and is it all digital?
BrightKnight 2 years ago
all digital, but no not separate. You have to rewind and fast forward to find what you want like VHS. But all digital so think digital meets VHS. It is tape after all.
alterdkyle 2 years ago
so, you record a constant stream, then upload and edit all as one?
BrightKnight 2 years ago
uh... not totally sure what you mean i think. Its just like recording on VHS whereas you could tape over your footage and what not but its mega high quality. and to put on a computer you plug it in via firewire and then capture the footage. So if you have an hour of footage on the tape it takes an hour to capture.
alterdkyle 2 years ago
YES! You can buy an external unit for the Z5U that records onto a compact flash card, so you don't have to capture footage, but it's like another $1000.
jjho8 2 years ago
hey dude quick question ..i have the same camera but i usually shot in dv and i shot some fotage in hd but i have no idea how to capture it .... i use final cut pro 5.1 and i have a firewire cable
tallerh 2 years ago
In audio video settings change sequence preset to HDV-1080p24, capture preset to HDV, device control preset to HDV firewire.
jjho8 2 years ago
nice compilation, did you achieve the slow motion during the actually shooting or was it a post prod effect?
bigkev0707 2 years ago
The Z5U has a slow motion function on it, so the slow mo was achieved during shooting.
jjho8 2 years ago
Very good - surprised to hear you achieved this with the stick lens. Is the lens much better than a Z1 lens?
