I just bought this cd for five bucks. I loved this tune when it came out when I was in 6th grade. Listening to the whole album Schon wanted to flippin' rock out and he tempered that impulse to forge Journey into the polished, stylized hitmaking machine it was. I love Journey, don't get me wrong. But I think Schon had a Page or a Blackmore inside him and that if this album had broken big, we would never have heard Raised on Radio. He would have been competing with Whitesnake and Def Lep.
Ya it's missing a better bass player and drummer. No offense to Shrive, he is a legend, but he wasn't cut out for this material. He looks as stiff and awkward as a drumming oak tree.
@milszyman No, you can't beat the Red Rocker's vocals, and what a duo with Neal Schon. I may just check out Thin Lizzy's cover though just for the heck of it!
@pugggs I'm not a drummer, but do you know who the drummer is? It's Mike Shrieve from the original Santana band, played at woodstock. Check out the solo during Soul Sacrifice. Shrieve is incredible. Don't judge by a youtube video.
@buixrule i can easily judge this performance by this video. you may think he is incredible. while being a non-drummer, you are entitled to that opinion. this performance shows tempo issues from the drummer as well as a horribly timed/placed fill that takes away from the feeling of the song. while we are at it... the bassist sucks. he is not consistent with his patterns and is very loose with the drums/tempo.
btw - a drum solo doesn't make someone a incredible drummer.
@pugggs You claim to be a drummer and you don't even know who Mike Shrieve is? lol that's like a guitarist who has never heard of Jimi Hendrix. Be Ashamed of yourself. Go out and pick up the first 5 Santana albums and then find Shrieve's solo stuff and his stuff with Stomu Yamashta and Steve Windwood in "Go" that should make you stfu..
@pj672010 No shit. His improve drum solo on the Woodstock take of Soul Sacrifice is one of the most ridiculously awesome solos of all time and he was 19 at the time. But he looks as stiff as an oak tree on this rock material, doesn't fit at all. Bass player looks like he should have taken Ben Orr's spot in The Cars goddamn.
I've been looking for years for this version of this song (wasn't finding it via "neil schon whiter shade of pale"). Stumbled on it while reading about sammy hagar on wiki. woo hoo!
Look I love Neal...he swings his ass off...at times he can get repetitive..I love Michael Schenker..different style...can get repetitive... they have their own thang goin' on..lol..... Ill tell you what EUguitar....when you start recognizing musicians such as present day guitarist Bireli Legrene and composers such as Victor Young and Ned washington, then you'll understand.
Whatever you do folks....DONT post that Schon is better than anyone else...apparently Ive broken some secret rule that only EUguitarRule knows about.......ohmmmm...God of the opinions EUguitarRule...ohmmmm....I worship your enlightened mind....ohmmmm lolololol OMG

Grow up..
I think Sammy should be wearing stiletto heels. As for the tune, this is an original. Yes, Clapton et al did a version of it 20 or so years previous (how they went to the future to hear it I dunno - somethign more to add to their legend :) ), but this is the defining version - it's ALIVE. Such a shame it's cut off before the end................. growl.
Love to watch the various stages of Sammy,s career from his beginnings to the now. Great singers last a long time, and he is certainly one of the best.
There is something sacred about this performance, I've still got the chills. I'm not a huge fan of Sammy, but this is absolutely the best I've ever heard him sing. He must have a real connection to this song to sing it so well. Having Shrieve and Schon backing you can't hurt either.
I have written about this. Don't buy what is called music out there. If sales drop off, and drop off, as they justly should, then we will hear real music again.

I still pull out the old vinyl LP of this and raise the roof from time to time! It is such a killer live album... If you liked this one, type in "HSAS He Will Understand" and check out that video!!! One of Neal Schons best live albums ever........
Vandenburg rocks!!! So underrated and yet so very, very good. Caught him along with Vai on the MOnsters of Rock tour in Germany. Have lots of pics and Whitesnake rally killed it. Dio was awesome also as they had Rowan Robertson (then 17) on the tour with them!! Awesome memories.
Re the disagreement here between nealkang and swpaul04: You are 100% mistaken, nealkang, and swpaul04 is right. This was not the "Van Halen audition for Sammy" in any way, shape or form.
Sammy's audition for VH happened ~ 2 years AFTER this HSAS show when Eddie's Lambourghini (car) broke down and he was at the repair shop talking to the mechanic (Claudio) about how Dave had just split and they were looking for a new singer. Claudio also worked on Sammy's car and said to Eddie, "call Sammy!"
Ken is exactly right! Sammy had no clue what so ever at this time period that he would later hook up with VH. I know that die hard VH fans did not except Sammy as the new front man for VH, but I was a huge fan of the "Red Rocker" while Eddie VH was playing clubs in S.F. So I was thrilled when Sammy came on board!
Quote: " ... but I was a huge fan of the "Red Rocker" while Eddie VH was playing clubs in S.F."
I think you meant playing clubs in L.A. (they're from Pasadena, an L.A. suburb), but yeah, I was a big fan of Sammy's mid-70s music too. "Street Machine" was a great record! Ditto the first Montrose album with Sammy on lead vocals. Killer stuff.
Hagar and Schon tried to get together again a few years ago. Michael Anthony on bass, Deen Castronovo on drums, and Joe Satriani on co lead guitar. Sammy and Michael did reunion with Van Halen. That would have been killer.
Great album !!! All were top musicians in there relative bands! Same as Deep Purple..... Led Zepelin and so on! Just great players laying together once! The Firm is another prime example!!!!!!!!!! Page, rogers the drummer for ac-dc and the bassest i think from yes?
Well, this was the Van Halen audition for Sammy Hagar because he had joined them shortly after this collaboration. But it really makes me think what would've, could've been if Sammy Hagar and Neal Schon had been together ever since by not going to Van Halen and Journey, respectively. It would've been very intriguing because I think they really had some great elements and chemistry here. Well, isn't life interesting?
You keep posting this in threads but it's not correct. HSAS was recorded in 1983. Sammy made another solo album, VOA, featuring "I can't drive 55" in 1984 and joined Van Halen in 1986. Before 5150 was released he made a final solo album due to his contract with Geffen Records titled "I Never Said Goodbye"
swpaul04, Your chronology may be correct, but I still think this project DID play the role of an audition of Hagar for Van Halen. It's a well-documented fact that Neal Schon had been a personal favorite of Eddie Van Halen, and I'm sure he was watching and listening to this project with great interest before Hagar actually joined Van Halen.
Maybe so, but at the time Van Halen was busy recording 1984, release date January 1 1984. I dont think they were looking for a new singer at that time.
This is amazing. Sammy, when he is on, is the man. Love the original but Sammy and Neil just took this and made it theirs. This is one of those classic moments you only get so many of in music (or anything, for that matter). A HSAS reunion would be fun. Maybe with Michael Anthony?
Like this? Check out Hardline. Neal Schon's other project from the early 90's.

Yea, I think that the working band name was Planet Us. I would have LOVED for that incarnation to have happened

By the way, Schon and Perry had worked with Sammy on his early solo albums in the late 70s long before Sammy had colaborated with Eddie.

Watch Santana's Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock to see this amazing drummer in his younger days.

Pure fucking magic!!!!!!!! wish Sammy would junk the cabo shit, forget VH, and do nuther disc w/ Neil, Kenny, etc.
