Carbon dating DOESN't work...you assume too much my friend. For instance you assume the earth and/or carbon is decaying at a constant rate, but what if it's not constant...what if the continental drift was not constant but one dramatic geological event? And what if you're wrong about the half-life of carbon? I haven't met any 5,000-year-old scientists have you? So it doesn't work on Marine Animals but only on land carbon......any other special exemptions?

@BrianBartholin maybe the resin just had less c14 than c12 in it, a lot less, to begin with. With something like shellac, that makes sense. It doesn't receive c14 from the air like plants or animals do.

It doesnt even matter if carbon dating is correct ornot there are more than 20 different types of methods out there and all of them confidently estimate the earth's age to be at 4.54billion years old.
so if farther from atmosphere causes underwater carbon tests to be wrong then why does carbon dating work on rocks miles and miles below the earths surface? also you cant just switch the test if you dont like the results.
I shouldn't have to tell you why carbon dating isn't used on minerals or on scales of time larger than 60,000 years. You should already know when you begin an argument about carbon dating that carbon dating isn't used to confirm the age of the Earth.

The point of the video may have had a debunking undertone; but overall it was informative about the type of dating. Discussing the commonly used arguements that degenerate the name of said tests is just covering all bases. A dozen times I have heard that Carbon Dating has been proved wrong as a arguement to the young earth theories; but always by someone who has no understanding of the actual tests. Carbon 14 is taught in school but not nearly enough.

Dinosaurs came from some ancient lizards. Back then the earth had only insects and small lizards on land, so large lizards easily survived by dominating all the other animals.

Apes and Humans have a long distant common ancestor. We did not evolve from the apes you see today. Both Apes and humans have evolved to what you see today form a more ancient animal . Hence all animals you see today have their own evolutionary history. Greater than 90% of animals that existed do not exist today. And they don't "turn into" anything -- they have offspring which vary slightly. Given enough time a lot of slight variations add up and a new kind of animal which you might call a new species can arise.
We have a good idea of the ancestry sequences because we can look at DNA (genetic fingerprints) to see commonality amongst some animals living today.

Small changes are noticeable over a small period of time while larger changes of larger period of time. To correct you earth is closer to 5.5Bn years old. One, the biblical date of 6000 years was extrapolated from the two conflicting genealogies the 18th century, long before we had any real means to determine the age of the earth.
Two, evolution occurs because in any reproductive population there is always variation. Once subjected to certain environmental pressures, said variations become dominate, resulting in descent with modification.

so if farther from atmosphere causes underwater carbon tests to be wrong then why does carbon dating work on rocks miles and miles below the earths surface? also you cant just switch the test if you dont like the results.

They are not switching the test because they dont like the results, they use a different test because carbon dating CANT be used.

The point of the video may have had a debunking undertone; but overall it was informative about the type of dating. Discussing the commonly used arguements that degenerate the name of said tests is just covering all bases. A dozen times I have heard that Carbon Dating has been proved wrong as a arguement to the young earth theories; but always by someone who has no understanding of the actual tests. Carbon 14 is taught in school but not nearly enough.

Wing stubs may have allowed fast-running dinosaurs to turn quickly (ostriches do the same thing today). They may also have acted as brakes, allowing tree-climbing dinosaurs to leap or fall.

@kjm1017: We evolved from the great apes, which had fur because it kept them warm in winter during the night (like most animals of Africa.) Animals before then could not *make* clothes that they could put on and take off.
Dinosaurs came from some ancient lizards. Back then the earth had only insects and small lizards on land, so large lizards easily survived by dominating all the other animals.

@kjm1017: As potholer54 explains, our ancestors lost their "fur" before moving to Alaska. Hominids gained the ability to fashion their own clothes which gained us the ability to operate in a larger range of weather conditions. Having fur slows you down in some hot mid-day in environments.
Giraffe's evolved from an antelope with their legs and neck incrementing in steps. You can see that it was uneven when they drink -- they spread their legs awkwardly.

Apes and Humans have a long distant common ancestor. We did not evolve from the apes you see today. Both Apes and humans have evolved to what you see today form a more ancient animal . Hence all animals you see today have their own evolutionary history. Greater than 90% of animals that existed do not exist today. This is a simple explanation but I hope I have clarified your misunderstanding.

@kjm1017: Leo297 is a little confused. We *ARE* an ape, and we evolved from an ape. The actual evolutionary line appears to be: Australopithecus Homo Habilis Homo Ergaster Homo Erectus Cromagnon (modern man)
All of the above are apes (including us) and all are extinct (unless you consider us really not different from Cromagnon).
However, any given evolution is not required to wipe out the previous species it came from.

@kjm1017: Apes, not monkeys. Humans, chimpanzees and bonobo are apes, while a Rhesus is a monkey.
And they don't "turn into" anything -- they have offspring which vary slightly. Given enough time a lot of slight variations add up and a new kind of animal which you might call a new species can arise.
We have a good idea of the ancestry sequences because we can look at DNA (genetic fingerprints) to see commonality amongst some animals living today.
There is plenty to know.

The idea of human evolution was actual around before him, and considered by people like James Burnett. If anyone was laughing by the time Darwin explained *how* evolution worked, they certainly were slow to catch whatever it was that was funny.

The answer is we have not stopped evolving. Neither has any of the bacteria, plants, animals, fungi, etc that occupy this plant. We are also constantly evolving. If you look at the evolution of hominids (great apes, which we are a part of) and the evolution of Homo (genus) you will realize how much change there has been over the last million years.
Simple answer is we have no stopped evolving, I dont know why you would assume we have.

It doesn't take millions of years for evolution to occur. You need to pay attention more. Evolution is an ongoing process. Small changes are noticeable over a small period of time while larger changes of larger period of time. To correct you earth is closer to 5.5Bn years old. No one made the age of the earth fit anything. All forms of dating have shown earth age to be well over billions of years old. You keep claiming its 6,000 years old but what evidence do you have? The Bible?

One, the biblical date of 6000 years was extrapolated from the two conflicting genealogies the 18th century, long before we had any real means to determine the age of the earth.
Two, evolution occurs because in any reproductive population there is always variation. Once subjected to certain environmental pressures, said variations become dominate, resulting in descent with modification.

So many problems in your logic. The Big Bang theory explains the formation of our Cosmos as we know it. It doesn't attempt to explain the very beginning of existence and should not be held accountable for that. Know one knows how everything began. If you are going to use the argument that 'God created all' then you need to explain who created him or why he does not need to have a creator.

Many Jews would argue that christian take the old testament and twist it around. You need to be more logical with your argument.

He said a coherent argument, not a non sequitur one. FYI that's a logical fallacy, Latin for ' it dies not follow'.
The term 'Big Bang' is actually a misnomer for The theory explaining the universal expansion of time and space which is still observable. In reality what it describes isn't big, nor is it a bang.
So, how you get all the way from a fundamental misunderstanding of cosmology, and of science in general to 'magic man done it'?

Simple indeed. But again, you lack evidence. I can dismiss this argument using no evidence because you have used no evidence to support it.
You also avoided the question directed at you. Here, let me repeat it:

Really? Somehow I doubt you presented evidence. I did read some of those comments and you gave none.
And I just love that comment you said at the end there. If he is impossible to understand, how can you be sure about anything you have learned about him? If he is not bound by logic, then how can you make a logical conclusion about him? You can't really and anything you say is just guesswork.

Why do I keep talking to you? I don't really understand what you're getting at... Why wouldn't I? You are the one who chose to post on an open forum. I have every right to respond.
My suggestion is that you actually learn about evolution and other such theories before you go rejecting them. Also know that a person can be Christian and believe in evolution at the same time. My father, mother and sister are prime examples. All Christian and all accept evolution. Its not that hard.

because understanding the World requires science. Everything we use from medicine to computers to food is because of our understanding of science. Without science we would be running around believing gods made thunder and lightening (some of us still do by the sounds of it.)

Don't play the victim card. You should've seen this coming. And many of these people are not trying to sway your faith, but trying make you see reason. You seem to be under the impression that it is impossible to be religious and accept evolution.
And you obviously did not learn evolution. Your definition for it is incorrect. Your teacher either taught it wrong or you didn't pay attention in class. But hey, prove me wrong. Define natural selection and show that you understand. If not, learn it.

Fine. You are openly admitting that you know absolutely nothing about evolution. Natural selection is the main force driving evolution and would have been one of the first and most heavily stressed things to be taught on the subject in school (unless you are home schooled). Therefore, you have no place arguing against people who have spent years studying this subject. Either learn it or leave.
And yes it is possible to be religious and accept evolution. The pope, for example, accepts evolution.
