Her style of dance is not for me, but her conditioning techniques are tops! She is not overrated when it comes to that. Her conditioning techniques can be used in any style of bellydance.
That 'persian lip shimmy' is so difficult! My friends and I have been trying to learn it since we were little and we still can't do it! lol. Can't do the alternate raising of the eyebrows either.
funny... i just saw her perform last night. She spent about 10 minutes just shimmying - yet everyone at Rakkasah stood there breathless... I thought she was exquisite and very approachable. She showed me her 'persian lip shimmy' up close and we had a good chuckle. What a sweet and wonderful human being!
As she aged, she got very matronly looking and very fat. Her dancing was never great, but it was better before. She is very mechanical, robotic, overly choreographed and busy in her dancing. It is as if she doesnt feel the music at all...
strange, I always have the impression she s not choreographed at all, but rather improvising.. you know that piece with her moving to a violin only? she s got a lovely silver belly bijou.. i find that piece fascinating and a bit dull at the same time (FOR the improvisation). i m not a great fan of her style so far.. it s hectic and strange to me. but mayb i get more into it one day..
I agree that her dance is too busy and seems overly choreographed, detached from the music, simply following a basic beat - much like American Jazz dancing and the like. Instead of an authentic emotional response to the range of human emotion present in Middle Eastern music, I see theatrical expressions posing as feeling. I get bored quickly watching her performances.
Her costume choices (minimalist and bare) do not flatter her fuller figure. It's as if she is still dressing for her girlish figure of 20 years ago and instead should dress the vuluptuous matronly body that is now hers. (Where are the Stacey and Clinton of the BD community when you need them? ;-)
Opinions do change, but those are my two cents for now.
I find it so interesting to see people talk about Suhalia like this, when I know her and her daughter. they are amazing people! <3

hmmmm...I guess he's just being creative. It does put a more authentic feel to the narration I think.

um, vuluptuous yes, Matronly no. Matronly reminds me of an old lady who wears elastic waisted pants.
