That looks so.... smooth (for the rider) but aggervating (for the horse). I would LOVE to ride a TWH and feel the "running walk" first hand. So much different from the Arabians I ride, I bet. ;)
Is the running walk relaxed for both the rider and the horse? Or is it more on the tenser side? I've always wanted to ride a gaited horse, though no one I know personally owns one.
One of the biggest challenges in working the TWH walking gaits is to rate their speed. The running walk should never lose form in gaining speed. Like our own fast walk, a horse can only carry a true walking gait so fast before he/she must begin suspending. Suspension changes the gait into something else such as a rack, step-pace or pace, depending on the timing and balance of the horse... but the headnod goes away as suspension occurs and it is no longer considered a correct running "walk".
Beautiful, beautiful horse! I looked at his pedigree, and it appears he and my TWH horse are cousins! Nice to see a TWH doing his thing *naturally*!!!
Thanks so much. One of the great things about riding and developing a natural horse is that they KEEP GETTING BETTER! Papa is better today than he's ever been... bigger strided, bolder moving and even more fluid if you can believe it. I think every TWH should have the chance to develop their natural abilities.
Why in the WORLD would you want to do that when he's perfect???? He IS hard to beat at sound horse shows! Heavy shoes don't make the horse--natural training and qulaity breeding do. Who needs heavy shoes when you have good breeding, natural training, excellent temperament, and natural talent to boot?
Shoeing should be "only for hoof protection and preservation". I don't believe in shoeing to enhance gait. I want to develop my horses to see what "they" can become, not what my farrier can make them. At 10 yrs Papa is getting better every year. When you use weighted shoes, long toes, artificial hoof angles to correct gait you are not helping your horse. If this industry/breed is ever going to get these horses appreciated for what's bred in they've got to quit shoeing for gait.
Happy to see someone doing what's right for the horse! People that are looking for a stud to breed to should be happy as well because they know what they're getting. With an "enhanced moving horse" you don't know if the horse tends to be pacey or trotty, so if you are looking for a stallion to breed to your mare and say she is trotty or pacey you may be doubling up on the problem. His movement is perfect and a mare owner knows what they're getting. Keep up the good work!
This is a great video that some of the build up horse people should watch and try to remember what I founding walking horses was bred to do. I love seeing real walking horse people proud of the true walk. How much to cover a papered mare. I also have a bloodline that move like your horse, I would love to have some outside blood to cross them its very hard to find a true keg shod walking horse. I live in kentucky I wish you didn't live so far away. Awesome horse! alot of time invested in him..
High into 5 figures... basically he's not priced to sell. But he is available to cover your mares. Go see howetheywalk. com If you like what he's doing, you'll love what he's putting out.
you have an amazing walking horse there. What are his bloodlines? My older walker mare moves like him but she has an injury that prevents her from being shown anymore. She is a prides final edition daughter.
Papa's bloodlines are Delight of Pride (original Papa) and Pusher on top, with Generator, Royal Master and Ebony Masterpiece on bottom. Lots of Suns Delight D and we can trace to Midnight Sun 12 times on his pedigree, but I've been told by the old-timers that his big loose walk comes from Ebony Masterpiece.
This horse has an incredible gait!! I think (and hope) that my colt has potential to move like this with more training. Do you know what kind of shoes he's wearing?
Papa is barefoot in this (and most) video. He is only ever shod in trail (keg) shoes. I do not believe in using shoes to effect gait... they are only band aids to gait and do not correct what the horse is doing.
running walks are so cool! i rode a tennessee walker on a trail ride at one place in colorado, and there were a lot of places on the ride where we got to trot and canter, and i got my horse to do the running walk. it was awesome! id never ridden a tennessee walker before that!
Your horse appears relaxed, unlike a video of another horse I saw earlier. It's sad what some do to their animals (regardless of the breed) to win a stupid ribbon. Good job!
This boy is not for sale. He is, however, a breeding stallion and he's putting some REALLY nice moving horses on the ground. I know of a 2 yr old filly out of him, not started, but available for sale... Papa is putting out multigaited offspring (black), nice backends and very loose. His oldest is 4 yrs, and so far, of the ones undersaddle, they are developing really nice canters as well.
Not my type of riding, but its nice to see a relaxed and natrual horse with a rider with quiet and soft hands. I feel bad for you TWH guys who are good horsemen because all anyone else ever sees are the terrible riders and abused horses. Keep it up, you are the true stars of the show in my eyes!
Excuse me but this horse is "BAREFOOT"!!! Its obvious to EVERYONE that has a clue that you do not know what you're talking about. Of course you could be just going around to every TWH video posting this. Shame on you.
you do NOT know what you are talkling about. this horse is Not sored. just because a horse has a nice running walk does not mean it is sore. Dr. judy moore
I'm beginning to think you're a doofus. I highly doubt you'd know a sored horse if it bit you fiercely in the buttocks. This horse ain't sored and I would venture to say has NEVER been sored. Please educate yourself before making inappropriate and inflammatory statements (particularly ones that make you look stupid).
This is Papa's Royal Delight, 9 yr old stallion shown only in sound, flatshod horseshows. He's won the FOSH National's English Pleasure Grand-championship 3 times now. Totally natural, he will hit 7 different gaits. Papa stands at Howe They Walk Farm (see website) Search Youtube for "raprhowe" and see more of Papa and his first offspring, Gracie under saddle. We find that Papa adds looseness and stride to a mare's offspring, passes on his beautiful head and his color.
but you must keep in mind, not all tennessee walking horses perform the flatwalk and running walk. most of the twhs i know rack, infact i own twh that goes racking
I don't have to keep that in mind. I have a TWH that racks too, but b/c she was trained properly, she also does an excellent running walk, similar to Papa's. Most TWHs would flat walk if they had proper training to teach them how to round & use their bodies correctly. I have seen TWHs that are dead pacers or trotters & after some basic dressage training start the process of flat walking. Too many people just jump on a gaited horse & go without considering proper training to gain proper gaiting.
yes. my horse also performs a good flat walk & running walk..but he doesn't have a lot of head nod that is why he was trained to rack. he is a great ambling & english pleasure horse. i have a video of him on my page if you would like to take a look
I don't get it: why change the horse's gait just because he doesn't have a lot of head nod? Why not promote stretching his muscles and getting him to learn to reach with the front and drive with the hind through natural exercises to get more head nod? Yet another problem with the TWH breed--too many people try to change the gait to suit a certain "look" rather than accepting the horse's capabilities for what it has.
How far can the horse walk like this in a day?

OK, I've been meaning to do this for quite some time. Just been tremendously busy trying to get my book finished.
Go see "Playin' Around with Papa" on my videos...
