  • her voice is a gift to us all. truely remarkable

  • Too bad people have no clue about talent. The idiots walking around acting like not wits :'(

  • @NewEnglandBudo i was thinking that as soon as i started watching, glad im not the only one. thanks for sharing , I love this song :)

  • @nascargurl14 Thanks I thought it was just me that was developing hateful thoughts against them. Check out Trace Adkin's cover EXX0S9P1SUo of this song that goes back many years. It was originally made famous by the early bluegrass singers such as Bill Monroe and others. Check his acapella version LI92oDdXazg Should be in the list to your right>>>

  • she was 16 here?! wow this is amazing!

  • Wish I could hear her sing this NOW!

  • What a lovely version, great bluesey backing, cool. Really nice.

  • She doesn't play fiddle as much as she used to...which is too bad because she's a very good fiddle player.

  • She doesn't play fiddle as much as she used to...which is too bad because she's a very good fiddle player. I think Tony Rice is the guit player.

  • whoever the 8 people are that hit the thumbs down on this song are frikkin idiots!!! It just doesnt get any better..........

  • @appalachianjeeper agreed!

  • BIG THANKS to Taylor510 you have posted some great moments in american music....As far as wayfaring stranger is concerned...I've heard many versions. The ultimate best is on the "Gather by the River" DVD..done by a russian band with the help of Mr. Rowan...it's mind boggoling.

  • @rebelrandle IBMA Awards nominations: 14 Wins: 14

I think it was some bluegrassers who gave her that idea. ;)

  • @rebelrandle Oh I AM sorry dude that we are not all "pure " bluegrass like you but you see, some of us were not born in 1911. But I am sure there is a place for the "True" bluegrass fan to hang. Obviously not on Alison Krauss singing Wayfaring Stranger as she is not Approved by rebelrandle. I am guessing you were ordained by Bill himself as the official caretaker of bluegrass purity then. Best of luck to you dear! :)

  • @rebelrandle Correct! I AM smart and I like what I personally call country. Though strictly speaking I prefer to state I like the more extended genre these days called Americana. Have a nice weekend doll. :)

  • @rebelrandle btw you ole rebel you, are you going to remove this comment again as well?

  • Comment removed

  • @rebelrandle I wouldn't give you the pleasure. Never said she couldn't sing just let her sing americana not bluegrass unless she lets the Coxes do the singing too lv you Norm the Illinois hillbilly

  • @rebelrandle Well Norm the wimpy Illinois hillbilly, lucky for us,YOU are not the one deciding such things.

And FYI I hate modern country with a passion. But also FYI this video is hardly "Modern Country". It seems you just have a hard time with definitions. I suggest you get back to listening to that genius on your channel and simply stop listening to Alison Krauss. Who btw never claimed to be singing Bluegrass but WAS appreciated by the likes of Monroe and Stanley themselves, if not by you.:)

  • @rebelrandle I see Alison IS approved by you when it comes to gospel. Or is that just the Cox family with songs from albums Alison Krauss produced? Twit!

  • Eh. If you want to hear a woman really belt this song out beautifully, look up the versions done by Neko Case.

  • @proposals Okay but can she play the fiddle like that? ;)

  • And for a really really emotional rendition check out the Maria mcKee version.

  • @proposals I also like Neko Case's version of this song, however, that does not diminish in any way the beauty of this version by the astonishingly talented Ms. Krauss

  • Thank you, YukonRoxx, for taking the time to help me with this. I am really good at following chords but I don't have much of an ear. I started playing in my mid 20's but never developed the ear. I am now 59 years old.

  • nice voice, good performance

but she doesnt have enough emotional luggage to put actual feeling into it

  • Yes this is an amazing preformance , but its lacking soul

I cant tell her feelings , it sounds like another country song

  • @angelgirl12897 amen

  • Is Dan Tyminski a part of Union Station at this time ?

  • This is why you need to get out to local festivals. You never know what you might find there.

  • Ooh. Very bad jokes at the end.

  • her voice reminds me a little of joan baez

    nice one!

  • "The City of Brotherly Shove..." Ray S. Jesus Saves.

  • so light and so deep at the same time.

I love the violin and her voice

  • Sweet! Thanks for posting it!

  • I just realized she was 16 years old back then. Unbelievable...

  • @AchimRelats amazing that she is only 16 yo!!

  • Wow, Alison and the band were really paying their dues here. What a lame audience. Too bad the camera apparently didn't have a "zoom" button.

  • Wow what a treat thank you so much for this post I want to see the hole thing please I live close to the Harmonds and his family has there bluegrass band going on. wow thanks again Taylor10cel mike.....................

  • This is pretty good. Although I have to say that the best version I've heard is by The Von Trapp Children from their A Capella CD.

  • if you think the von trapps is good you should hear bill monroe do it,acapella with a mandolin

  • Man, I love this song. The guitar is just terrific..adds a new jazzy tone to it. Can somebody post that cord progression. I am not talented enough to figure it out myself.Love you Allison.

  • Its got Am Dm F C & E7

you may have to use a capo or transpose the chords to get in the same key.

Check out Eva Cassidy's version. You will really like it.

  • @zeamla07 First off go and look at the chords to the Johnny Cash version on ultimate-guitar as they are following that one pretty much. Just throw a capo on the third fret and instead of Am play an Am7 which is just removing your ring finger. Over the parts where it says to play Am in the tab play Am7, Bm7,C,Bm7. Over the parts where it says to play Dm in the tab play Dm,Em,F,Em.

The chorus is the same pretty much...Anyway, that'll get you close to it. It's nice arrangement of it. Cheers!

  • That is Tony Rice's arrangement of the song.

  • Thats how ya sing it Lady...Kudoz

  • wow, she really belts out this one, like the strength and pitch so maintains, great, and the band sounds hot too.

  • wow allison has a strong voice. really perfect and gorgeous

  • alison you are pushing my ceramic tweeters too the max

  • Wow! You are blessed to have Allison at the Philly! You can drive my car any day Allison. A voice of an angel!

  • Here's To Timeless Music

  • Wow. I love it.

  • This is awesome! Thanks for posting. This is before Union Station included Barry, Ron, Tim Stafford and Dan. I think this is around the time "Too Late To Cry" came out. Again...AWESOME!

  • Wow--back when she had vibrato...amazing.

  • she still has that.

  • Not sure what you mean. The majority of her sustained notes these days are done with little to zero vibrato at all, much different than the style she uses here. I really don't know whether it was a conscious choice or not, but it could be; old-style mountain music, drawing heavily from the sean-nos style of Irish singers, tended to feature little to no vibrato.

  • doesnt mean she doesnt still have it. thats all i meant. i have heard her recently do some of the old time bluegrass songs, it is still there.... even if she doesnt use it in her "main stream" music much anymore.

    thats all.

  • Fantastic video! One of the best country singers in the world. Like the jazz influence.

  • My grandmother's favorite hymn. Love Alison, too.

  • Please post all you can of Alison, its great to see younger Alison.

  • Who was playing with her? I know thats not Ron Block on Banjo cause he didn't come in till 91 and I know its probably John Pennel on bass but who are the banjo and guitar players. I know its not Tim cause he didn't come till 90 and I know its not Dan cause he didn't come till 94

  • Watch the end of the video! they introduce themselves ; -)

  • Great to see Alison in her ealier years.

  • There is more of this performance. Should I post it?

  • Absolutely! Post whatever you got! If you have a video of her tuning her fiddle in the parking lot while coughing, we want to see that too!!!

  • dude do you even have to ask lol

  • of course you should post it, I think I speak for most of us when I say we would love to see more Allison, Great video man, you are so lucky to have seen her back in the day.

  • @Taylor510ceL9 yes please !

  • @Taylor510ceL9 Yes :)

  • @Taylor510ceL9: Please, please do post more!

  • @Taylor510ceL9 yes please.

  • @Taylor510ceL9 heck yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Taylor510ceL9 yes, more please.

  • @Taylor510ceL9 Yes you should post it!!

  • 17 yrs old at the time! Amazing! And of course she still is playing and singing with those same people. Alison never forgets her friends. Her loyalty and independence are well known.

  • I think the singer should be Alison Krauss?
