I've actually never looked this up before, but I had always thought the SS was RWD... that was news to me that they were FWD, but I guess FWD works, and since FWD does SOOO much better in the snow, it's an okay thing
well they are literally the same car, the impala may be slightly heavier, but not by much. the only difference between the engines is that the Pontiac has a slightly different tune for better acceleration, so it has a slightly higher torque output, but the impala is better at higher rpm. so it would be close, stock for stock
they have the exact same hp and torque 303 hp/323 lb ft. the impala is 132 lbs heavier but slightly quicker because of it's shorter final drive ratio according to c/d

Certain cars are intended to have a large quantity of cars produced. ie the impala. It was the 3rd best selling car in America in 2006. Ur not going to have some $50,000+ selling more than 290,000 cars in one year. If they had created it as quick as these sports cars you're comparing it to, think about how many people couldn't afford them because of the price. Chevy already has sports cars ie camaro and vette which would make a better comparison horsepower wise.

The earlier versions of the BMW M5 had a 3.6 litre engines and put out more power and speed than this 5.3. The average Jaguar with a 4.0 litre engine puts out atleast 400HP and gets well over 160MPH. There is a price difference, but that's no excuse for poor mechanics...European mechanics outperform American mechanics on any day. The average European car gets 100HP for ever 1L.

Most of those cars also have at least a 5 or a 6 speed transmission, RWD, and probably weigh a lot less and also cost almost $20,000 more. I have an '08 SS and all I'm saying is that they're definitely not slow. If this car had RWD, a 5 or 6 speed 0-60 would most likely be 5.0 seconds vs. 5.6 seconds. This car wasn't created for extreme speed it's basically a somewhat sporty family sedan that's faster than most cars on the road.
They're not slow cars, but in comparison to other cars, they're way behind the competition. If Chevy wasn't trying to make a fast sports car, they wouldn't have made it a 5.3L V8.
The reason they kept FWD and a 4speed was due to budget concerns and the current LS4 is considered a reliable engine. If Chevy truly wanted to make this thing extremely fast, they could have take the z06 for example. It has 505hp and sure it has a 7.0 litre, however, it does 0-60 in only 3.6 seconds. Quite a bit faster than many Jaguars and BMW's with 4.2L and 400 hp. BTW, most of the jaguars that i saw had 4.2L v8 with 300 hp and had 400ph (supercharged)
IDK why they didn't make it a 5 speed atleast. It seems like a waste to be making a 5.3 litre V8 with only a 4 speed. They should've stuck with the 3.6 litre and then upgraded it when they decide to upgrade their transmission. It will add to the price, but it should be worth it. Throw a supercharger in there and you'll easily be competing with European models that cost 10K-30K dollars more, performace wise...
Also, I don't recall him saying anywhere in his video description that his car was faster than a BMW or a Jaguar. Several Ferrari's also have smaller engines and put out more horsepower than this car, however, they're built specifically for performance. Chevy wasn't trying to create an outrageously fast car. Also, it's not necessarily poor mechanics, they were probably trying to stay within budget.
Trust me, I respect you're opinion. However, I feel in any case that 5.6 seconds to 60 mph isn't slow, even for an engine of this size. I understand that you're not calling it a performance vehicle, I happened to notice that you're comparing it to performance vehicles and that's why I commented. I think we all agree that it isn't extraordinarily fast, I'm just saying that for FWD, 3800lbs and 4speed it's pretty quick.
Okay, in that case, considering the cars in its price range and category, it's a very fast car. And I forgot to take into account that it's a 4speed, FWD when I posted my first comparison.
Jaguar is one my least favorite performance cars. Not only does the new design look bad cosmetically (IMO), but the engine isn't worth it. Their 4.2 V8 engine gives only about 300HP. Compare that to say, the new Honda Accord. The new Honda Accord has a 3.5 litre V6 engine and it only puts out about 30 HP less than that Jaguar. So, recently, Jaguar hasn't made much sense to me. If you're gonna charge people that much, atleast give them their moneys worth.
And of course, the Accord is much cheaper, the insurance is cheaper, it's FWD, and if you invest in a supercharger, you'll pretty much have a car that's stronger and faster than the Jaguar that costs about $40,000 more.

Gas mileage is important. Not because gas is expensive either. One of the things that makes a great race car is its efficiency. 5MPG is trash for a car that only has 300HP. The Aston Martin DB9 puts out about 150 more HP than the Monte Carlo and it still manages to get up to 15 highway miles per gallon.

I understand it has a V8, the old impala rear driver was a fullsize. The new impala chassis is midsize, and front wheel drive, with a v8.
It's not the same as having a full frame, rwd layout, with a v8.
I'm sure it's a great daily driver, but it could have been so much more of a car if it were closer to the old 95 era car.

That is very slow for a car that's a V8 with a 5.3 liter engine. Most European cars can do 180MPH+ with that kind of power.

Car and Driver commented saying how surprised they were that a FWD 5.3L V8 with a 4-speed could pull 5.6 seconds to 60 and 14.2 seconds in the quarter mile. So, umm yeah, definitely NOT slow for a V8 5.3L engine!

In comparison to other Euro cars with that same engine size, or even smaller, it doesn't outperform. The earlier versions of the BMW M5 had a 3.6 litre engines and put out more power and speed than this 5.3. The average Jaguar with a 4.0 litre engine puts out atleast 400HP and gets well over 160MPH. There is a price difference, but that's no excuse for poor mechanics...European mechanics outperform American mechanics on any day. The average European car gets 100HP for ever 1L.

The current Mustang GT has a 4.6 litre, V8 engine, uses up a shit load of fuel and only gives you about 300HP. That's pathetic for a car with that size engine. Any European car with that size engine will put out atleast 400-500HP even w/o a supercharger

Most of those cars also have at least a 5 or a 6 speed transmission, RWD, and probably weigh a lot less and also cost almost $20,000 more. I have an '08 SS and all I'm saying is that they're definitely not slow. If this car had RWD, a 5 or 6 speed 0-60 would most likely be 5.0 seconds vs. 5.6 seconds. This car wasn't created for extreme speed it's basically a somewhat sporty family sedan that's faster than most cars on the road.

They're not slow cars, but in comparison to other cars, they're way behind the competition. If Chevy wasn't trying to make a fast sports car, they wouldn't have made it a 5.3L V8.

The reason they kept FWD and a 4speed was due to budget concerns and the current LS4 is considered a reliable engine. If Chevy truly wanted to make this thing extremely fast, they could have take the z06 for example. It has 505hp and sure it has a 7.0 litre, however, it does 0-60 in only 3.6 seconds. Quite a bit faster than many Jaguars and BMW's with 4.2L and 400 hp. BTW, most of the jaguars that i saw had 4.2L v8 with 300 hp and had 400ph (supercharged)

IDK why they didn't make it a 5 speed atleast. It seems like a waste to be making a 5.3 litre V8 with only a 4 speed. They should've stuck with the 3.6 litre and then upgraded it when they decide to upgrade their transmission. It will add to the price, but it should be worth it. Throw a supercharger in there and you'll easily be competing with European models that cost 10K-30K dollars more, performace wise...

Several Ferrari's also have smaller engines and put out more horsepower than this car, however, they're built specifically for performance. Chevy wasn't trying to create an outrageously fast car. Also, it's not necessarily poor mechanics, they were probably trying to stay within budget.

I understand that you're not calling it a performance vehicle, I happened to notice that you're comparing it to performance vehicles and that's why I commented. Jaguar is one my least favorite performance cars. Not only does the new design look bad cosmetically (IMO), but the engine isn't worth it. Their 4.2 V8 engine gives only about 300HP. Compare that to say, the new Honda Accord. The new Honda Accord has a 3.5 litre V6 engine and it only puts out about 30 HP less than that Jaguar. So, recently, Jaguar hasn't made much sense to me. If you're gonna charge people that much, atleast give them their moneys worth.

And of course, the Accord is much cheaper, the insurance is cheaper, it's FWD, and if you invest in a supercharger, you'll pretty much have a car that's stronger and faster than the Jaguar that costs about $40,000 more.

Gas mileage is important. Not because gas is expensive either. One of the things that makes a great race car is its efficiency. 5MPG is trash for a car that only has 300HP. The Aston Martin DB9 puts out about 150 more HP than the Monte Carlo and it still manages to get up to 15 highway miles per gallon.

I'd love to see any car get 15 mpg at 4.4K rpm while still accelerating beyond 135mph. Sorry douches not gonna see it ever, this car when driven sensibly gets easy 28mpg highway and 19 in the city.
