Between Venice and the Middle East, the link was mostly done by Armenians ....
some of the to day Hotels in Venice, as the Danieli, used to be private House of Armenian Khojjas (I don't like the term of merchants usaully used because these Khojja were much more than merchants !)
In a way, they anticipated the 19th century "entrepeneurs"
