The International Olympic Committee wishes to thank the 5 bidding cities: Beijing, Berlin, Istanbul, Manchester, and Sydney. For their efforts in presenting the bids and also promoting the Olympics. We really regret that there is only our one winner. And the winner is...
Okay this really shows the growth if the human brain since 1993, don't worry Sydney were worthy of those games, but what idiot would think that Manchester could host the olympics?
@SAMMYJS991 No what I'm saying is that when there is a better city in a country then you should use it, the UK has 2, London and Edinburgh so why did they use Manchester?
we shouldve copied and pasted our bid from the sydney olympics for the 2022 world cup. but then again we wouldnt of won coz fifa are corrupt as fuck. qatar? you're fucking kidding me. crowds are amazing in doha arent they? fucking joke. even though half the participating countries are just over the border they still cant fill half a fucking stadium. what an embarrassment. its the biggest tournament any of the nations will ever play in and still cant get over there and watch.
Samaranch started by thanking the bidding cities in alphabetical order, starting with Beijing. Many Chinese watching in China, who didn't speak English just heard "blah, blah, blah Beijing" and started jumping up and down, wildly cheering and shouting thinking they had won.
I think those that voted for manchester voted for oz after uk got voted knocked out and if im not misaken that favour was remembered for london 2012!!!
Gafan888, Listen. I don't agree with your views! I think it is time that the IOC takes the boldest step in its history to give the games to Rio! All you Americans will make another Atlanta Games and let me remind you had the Summer Games in 1904, 1932 and 1984.
America, like Australia, has a magnificent Olympic history, so for these extremely opinioned people of Rio, Brazil, I humbly and respectfully disagree with you. We may have had our problems with Atlanta 1996, but in my calm objective opinion the people of Chicago and the United States rightfully deserve this extraordinary honor . I deeply apologise for any hurtful comments.
HAHAHAH i remeber waking up being told sydney got the olympics and being disspointe cause it meant sydney would build a stium biger then QE2. I was a weird kid i admit but we got dwn to Sydney for the 2nd week of the games. The best week of my life so far
Sydney should have won this bid over Beijing a lot easier than the 2 votes it took. I'm glad Beijing has at least been given a chance to host an Olympic Games and what an opening ceremony they put on Friday 08-08-08.
And also I'm glad Athens got to host an Olympics as well in 2004. I hope a city like Toronto, Berlin, Paris or Rio De Janeiro would get that chance.
I was 13 years old and I was at Homebush with my dad when this got announced... I still remember jumping for joy like a madman! Watching that 15 years later still gives me a buzz!
Sammaranch really wanted Beijing to win this bid and cement his legacy as IOC President. People in Atlanta did not want Beijing to succeed them as hosts, they felt Sydney was the more appropriate host, but Beijing paid it dues.
Since when did Atlanta's Bill Payne or whatever have that much influence? Sydney won, like most cities, on it's lobbying. Mind you 2000 was chosen before the actual so-so Atlanta Games, so maybe the IOC didn't frown too much on AOCOG at the time, but still.
Me too. I love nostalgic stuff like this! If I could ever go back in time, I'd want to go back to that night, being in the crowds of people gathered on the Sydney streets and in Curcular Quay and the like. I can scarcely imagine how awesome it'd be.
Thankyou so much for uploading this. You've made my day!

Now someone just needs to tell me where the myth that Samaranch pronounced the winner as 'Syd-en-ney' came from!
erana19 2 years ago
yeah! agree! he clearly said Sydney, NOT syd-en-ey i think some comedian tried to imitate this accent and it caught on through aussie media.
pity, reflects aussie narrow mindedness

Luck to Rio de Janeiro in the candidature for the Olympic Summer Games of 2016!!!
Here in Chile is slowly taking enthusiasm the idea to organize the Olympic Winter Games of 2022 or 2026, in Santiago.
God wants to our political and sportive authorities convince so that with this begin to work to attain it.
And God wants to that you succeed the next year in Copenhague, Denmark, when it choose the host city of 2016.
¡¡¡Good Luck!!!
