its a fact if you use bread on a a cut, or splinter it can help suck infected puss out the cut and suck out the splinter its even better if you use mouldy bread seeing how mould is a natural form of pennicillian
Remember,..If you ever get a nasty cut on your leg, its' always important to put some wet bread on your leg, or maybe some nice peach cobbler, or possibly a banana up your ass...You'll still die of septicemia anyway, but at least you will have stayed mentally occupied.........
When women wear stockings for years when thy're younger their legs have no reason to grow hair. They never had to shave their legs, which would have been tricky with the blades men were using at the time
Seen this episode many a time always thought that she should've used the knife she heated in the fireplace to lance the wound and let the infection out. Then cauterize the wound with the knife again this would have killed any left over infection and sealed the wound. But again they wouldn't show graphics of this nature on TV just yet.
@laiosto ~ OMG, I was wondering the same thing, I've been watching LHOTP all weekend long on the Hallmark Channel and I really started to wonder how they used the bathroom n stuff with all those clothes on and how little the out house was.....
clariebear2 jeezzz makes you think how ever did women manage back in those times?? especially if the husband had to go away working or something. life was so terribly hard then.
oh man i can't believe some people think this show is boring. i was uite litterally on the edge of my seat cuz i thought she was gonna be able to catch the father before the left! poor thing! :( and that stupid stubborn cow
I remember this episode. All the LHOTP shows before this one seemed to be so happy-go-lucky but this shocked me and my 8 yr old brain. Wonderful acting by Karen Grassle.
Why to heck didn't she just start screeming and calling out instead of trying ot get to the window. This wasted time and they would have heard her if she did this.
no one should be alone when he/she has illness, especially women who tend to be weaker than men. feel bad for Caroline. she's so nice. her first aid care seemed appropriate but wasn't enough anyway.
I had tenatus shot long ago and very well could have gotten same as I had PUNCTURE wound in finger, hurts to this day at times.. it turned gross colors like hers here and swelled. Didn't have medical insurance.
Shout woman shout! Couldn't she open her mouth when the reverend came? Plus he never would have left like that with her pies sitting outside without wondering where she may have been.. he at least would have checked back, but he ran into Charles.
If you can't take it you need to toughen up and get a stronger stomach! My leg swelled up like this, a guy at school said 'ooh!' drew his breath in and left me there bleeding and bruised. Then I had to WALK to a bus wincing in pain while people stared. The pain was terrible. Still have the scar to this day.
I think I would have taken a risk and tried walking limping to doc's which was 3 miles away on this show. I had to WALK ON TORN ANKLE LIGAMENTS and ruined my ankle. My grandma had open leg ulcers that I saw daily, looked much worse than this.
My relatives had hallucinations with high fevers, of being hit on head and another of a horse stomping over him.. horrible. I had sleepwalking where I knew I was awake, yet I felt It was time to get up..
DIDN'T ANYONE EVER WONDER WHY CAROLINE DIDN'T SCREAM WHEN THE DOCTOR CAME TO THE DOOR? Or at least try? I had recurring laryngytis and was left alone ill like this... once I was crawling on my knees .
Yeah Danny wouldn't it be nice to have a calm mother like that who rarely raised her voice at her kids? mine went around the house shouting constantly.., I even have her shouting on us on old audio tapes.
I dont know this for a fact. When you look at her with the bun, there are lots of episodes where shes out in the wind. Tons will be out of the bun in the front & only to like her shoulder. If you look in a couple of the scenes in this one you can see the color difference. The real hair is only to her shoulders. I cant find any pics of her with in real life with hair that long. Only passed her shoulders. Plus other actresses on the show had short hair. Or to their shoulders like Mrs Olsen.
LOL!! Whats so funny! I think she does. Someone on here had an interview with Melissa Sue whos said allot of the actresses had shorter hair and had fake hair or wigs. If you look up pics (like on google image) of Karen Grassle you never see her with longer then shoulder length hair. All that is weave HAHAHA

yeah but you can still see the real hair in the front and extensions in back. They did that with most the actresses on little house because victorian and pioneer era women had really really uncut long hair back then. The actresses had short or shoulder length hair. So they wore wigs and extensions as said in the interview.
Yes, great episode, terrifying, full of suspense, but ended well. It's scary what an infection can do, and was really freaky when she was about to cut off her leg.
Wow, I've been trying to find this episode ever since I saw it the first time. It was a great one. My other favorite was the one where Andy had the wolves and the kids were stuck in the barn loft with the wild dogs trying to get in. Yikes. Thanks for sharing this!
I am a huge Little House fan, and I absolutely love this episode. She really played the part of a Godly 1800's frontier woman perfectly! Thanks for the videos!!
wow. when i saw Caroline with he hair let down , Mary took on her looks:D. and also, is the disease that afflicted her cause anxiety or paranoiya (srry too hard to spell >.<) if i had a wound THAT INFECTED, i would have been like CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP *drug vision commence 0,0;;) ....HOLY SH!T. bleh...bam..

women who tend to be weaker than men...... I'm sure a men would have been less ill from a major infection with probably sepsis....... duh!

She's lucky she didn't develop tetanus from how she got her wound.
The only cure for that today is prevention through an IM injection.
They still can't stop it if you already have it, and the symptoms of tetanus are evil.
vickiormindyb 2 years ago
what r some symptoms?
xxthinkpinkxx94 2 years ago
Uncontrolled muscle spasms, which eventually affect the vocal cords and larynx, making it impossible to breathe on your own.
However, lock jaw is the most common "evil" symptom.
That's where your jaw muscles stiffen so much it becomes impossible to open your mouth-which of course makes eating rather difficult.
vickiormindyb 2 years ago
ooo those do sound pretty evil. thanx for the info

Slapping that boiling cloth on her leg is probably the only thing that saved her. Most bacteria die in heat.
Obviously she didn't have a thermal bacterial infection (they thrive in heat.). Good thing the writer didn't know about that type.
I don't think they would have known about it in Laura Ingalls' lifetime anyway.
