Seen this episode many a time always thought that she should've used the knife she heated in the fireplace to lance the wound and let the infection out. Then cauterize the wound with the knife again this would have killed any left over infection and sealed the wound. But again they wouldn't show graphics of this nature on TV just yet.

She's lucky she didn't develop tetanus from how she got her wound.

The only cure for that today is prevention through an IM injection.

They still can't stop it if you already have it, and the symptoms of tetanus are evil.

However, lock jaw is the most common "evil" symptom.

I had tenatus shot long ago and very well could have gotten same as I had PUNCTURE wound in finger, hurts to this day at times.. it turned gross colors like hers here and swelled. Didn't have medical insurance.

If you can't take it you need to toughen up and get a stronger stomach! My leg swelled up like this, a guy at school said 'ooh!' drew his breath in and left me there bleeding and bruised. Then I had to WALK to a bus wincing in pain while people stared. The pain was terrible. Still have the scar to this day.

I think I would have taken a risk and tried walking limping to doc's which was 3 miles away on this show. I had to WALK ON TORN ANKLE LIGAMENTS and ruined my ankle. My grandma had open leg ulcers that I saw daily, looked much worse than this.

Slapping that boiling cloth on her leg is probably the only thing that saved her. Most bacteria die in heat.

Obviously she didn't have a thermal bacterial infection (they thrive in heat.). Good thing the writer didn't know about that type.

I don't think they would have known about it in Laura Ingalls' lifetime anyway.

I dont know this for a fact. When you look at her with the bun, there are lots of episodes where shes out in the wind. Tons will be out of the bun in the front & only to like her shoulder. If you look in a couple of the scenes in this one you can see the color difference. The real hair is only to her shoulders. I cant find any pics of her with in real life with hair that long. Only passed her shoulders. Plus other actresses on the show had short hair. Or to their shoulders like Mrs Olsen.

yeah but you can still see the real hair in the front and extensions in back. They did that with most the actresses on little house because victorian and pioneer era women had really really uncut long hair back then. The actresses had short or shoulder length hair. So they wore wigs and extensions as said in the interview.
