Secondly, if you're assuming that he can't play the riff with just downpicking, you're fucking stupid. Curt Mitchel plays Van Halen flawlessly which is light years more difficult to do than the hardest Metallica song is.

Some people just don't like the staccato sound of downpicking. Doesn't mean they suck. NeoGeo plays the song without downpicking and he's a fucking god.

And for clarification, I have a hard time using all downstrokes too, but I would try to convey that detail to my audience. Watch Hetfield live. You probably have anyway. But its INSANE how he uses downstrokes for nearly everything!

So do I sometimes because it seems to sound a bit tighter. Using all down strokes is not easy, lol. I try, but my right forearm literally starts to cramp up to where I can't even keep going. I can play using down strokes for many things, just not for an extended amount of time like Master of Puppets. If MOP was in alternate picking style, I don't think it would sound as tight and as heavy.
