  • great job on the intro!

  • I honestly really enjoy his voice. If he worked on it. It could be pretty great.

  • Don't worry about the keyboard critics. It takes a lot of balls to put a video on youtube of yourself doing anything, let alone singing. I felt that was an honest, heartfelt performance.

  • dude is that a turner guitar?

  • @rudiesssss nope

its a seagull. not sure what kind. I a

have an S6 made in canada very under rated guitar

  • did u have the tab ? would u like to write it down i like the intro

  • i would love the tabs

  • A bit more practice in the singing and it would be perfect. You are off too many times, but you got a wonderful vibrato in the voice, and your playing is fucking groovy man!

  • lol great guitar work but the sing..eh

  • Great guitar playing, kid!

  • OMFG!!! .... he's wearing flip-floppers xD

  • oh god.

  • cool ass solo but you kinda look like you hate your guitar when you do the slap. lol

  • @dismat *puta loca*

  • Hahahahahaha start it at 4:25....Great Guitar skills....TERRIBLE singing!!

  • Comment removed

  • Why did you sing gahh guitar was good!

  • I like the voice, it's unique. Keep it up!

  • So at this point I haven't even heard the singing yet, but that guitar is sounding SWEET!

  • crazy licks man!

  • u should change the title :

"i dont trust you to sing (i love u man) great cover btw"

  • i feel you man, such awesome playing

  • Haha love this shit.. you surprise me, i can't stop laughing from the time you sing but good playing.

  • good

  • interesting cover..very entertaining..i hear the buckley thing

  • This is fantastic! Your guitar playing is smooth and tasteful. And you've definitely got potential as a singer. If you were to put a little more work into intonation and not emphasizing too many different words, your voice and guitar would fit so well together it would be phenomenal. Keep up the good work! =D

  • Dude , i hope you read this , Your voice has got a groove about it that will differ you man , your hitting most of the notes , your voice has got this thing about it that sounds awesome when you sing well. Now get some singing lessons to perfect the note hitting but dont let them change your style. Your guitar is awesome so dont worry about that , potential .. potential is key.

  • lmao you cant sing bro

  • you should do other JM covers mate, that was pleasant to hear. thx

  • awesome guitar playing... would be very cool, if you could try to separete your voice, from the guitar even more, if you know what i mean.. i think you should relax more in your singing, anyway cool cover..

  • i love your song until you start to sing -_-

  • I love this rendition only thing i can say about your singing is; yes it does need work, work on your breathing/air control. other than that, you're set! with all said, I absolutely loved your rendition.

  • CAN YOU PLEASE TAB THIS?? Thanks. i LOve your groove man

  • I like it.

Your singing is not my style, but you are a good singer, only unconventional, wich is actually great, since there's so much pre-fabricated crap in the mainstream. But you guitar playing... won't say too much because words wouldn't make it justice. Truly artistic. Truly artistic.

  • dude, your intro is so baws. freal.

  • interesting voice, amazing guitar. don't stop singing though, interesting and different is much better than typical idol wanna be run of the mill singers any day of the week!

  • your a talented guitarist. very ugly singing. you need to take it easy

  • your a talented guitarist. very ugly singing

  • uncomfortable.......

  • Playing is amazing... singing wasnt great tho bud :(

  • Hey I like your singing too man, not just the playing which is just great!

  • Wow...awesome playing. Singing isn't perfect but I bet you heard that way too often in these comments. Keep up the good work!! Are there any tabs of this performance?

  • I loved the singing, reminded me of john martyn

  • @MrKajjah

it should remind you of john mayer....

  • some of the best acoustic playing i've seen but singing was weird though didn't expect that

  • your voice is just like "tears for fears" guy =S

  • You should do an acoustic duet with mayer except he would sing..

  • You should do an acoustic duet with mayer..

  • I wanna hate but I can't... Cus I'm jealous...

  • Finally, someone that understands that this should be finger picked. Next time less vocal dynamics.

  • Sounded like a white boy blues

  • Good job man... Great guitar playing but work on the vocals...not terrible but keep it together, don't over do it.

  • you're nasty on that acoustic.

  • Hey man, can we get a tutorial? Guitarist to guitarist ehhh?! :P

  • Jeff Mayer Buckley

  • wow. where do i start. very, VERY, nice guitar. its not sloppy at all. and as for the vocals... your voice is so unique it sounds so different, but you never go off key. its almost like your pushing it as far as the notes go, but it works. really well, wow.

  • i feel like jeff buckley's singing this song haha

  • @tejjj3

Haha yeah you aren't the first person to say that...

  • @tejjj3 ma anche no

  • @tejjj3 i would be flattered to hear that

  • Really awesome, very good! I enjoyed watching this :)

  • @EliasFrostMusic

    Thank you kindly!

  • your groove is amazing man...your playing is really good but the singing is not! This video would be better if you were just playing...don't quit though...work on it!

  • @RickAlaite

Yeah, I understand what you mean. I am continuing to work on singing but I'm now in a band with a singer who's absolutely phenomenal so I can just do what I do best: play guitar.

  • @DanielStephenSmock

I think you're being too hard on yourself. You're a phenomenal guitar player, and the singing is fine. It's just the excessive vibrato in certain places that makes the phrasing sound a little awkward...hey, at least you aren't off key, which is most people's problem.

I say keep working on it. I actually like the sound of your voice, and I think that with a little refining, a lot more people would too.

P.S. Definitely the best cover of I Don't Trust Myself on YouTube.

  • Dude, what a awesome guitar player you are!!! there's no doubt about it. Honestly, I think you did well by singing this song with your own voice, and style, and not just try to imitate John. It's a great version, I bet that John is proud of that. However, I'd advice you to get some singing classes. You have a beautiful voice too, it's just a matter of know how to use it better. Nice voice, nice playing, good choice. Regards from Brazil!

  • @costaemannuel

Thank you so very much, I genuinely appreciate your comments, both the compliments and the advice. Cheers!

  • Man, you play guitar awesome, but i figure your voice on a jazz kind song, or a blues one, i didn't like the kind of voice. I know is original, but don't like.

  • @elvinegarcia

    Yeah I hear ya...

  • The voice is decent man..I'm not going to lie though, I didn't look at the title at first and honestly thought it was Mayer playing the guitar. Your guitar playing is incredible

  • @acousticgtarist

Thank you very much! That's a great compliment my friend...

  • hey mate, your singing is fine! its good to experiment! you have quite good control of your voice, i think people have trouble with the tone of it, one for which i think is totally dope! since its not as smooth sounding, but i love the fact you attack this song at full force. KEEP IT UP MATE!

  • @copuffsaredreams

Thanks so much, I really appreciate that!

  • thin out your voice a little and keep it more stable. its not bad its unique. you are an awesome guitar player no doubt

  • @IamTheRedneck

Thanks man I appreciate it...and that's good advice!

  • good shit bro.. reminds me of jeff buckley

  • @photoxloan

    Thanks man!

  • Ahahahahahahaha, good god this is the greatest video ever. You play an awesome guitar but fuck me, you are such a weird singer. No bullshit, I have tears in my eyes from watching this. The long lead-in set up the singing so perfectly, shit I'm crying and laughing right now. I love you sooo much right now, this shit is going up on facebook!

  • @rbrown22

Um thanks? I have enough insecurities about singing as is but I hear ya...also, as I've mentioned in other comments, I'm now in a really great band with a singer is beyond phenomenal. I'm now just able to focus on being the lead guitarist (what I do best) and a little background vocals (which I am actually quite capable of).

Glad you found this entertaining though, albeit for a rather humiliating reason...

  • great version of the song ..the singing u can fix to a decent level but the guitar playing is great. theres lots of good guitarists out there but catching a groove like that is hard and takes talent. keep the passion for playing and just work on the singing.

  • @ptrgriffin75

Thanks very much man, I really appreciate that. Playing is what i love to do best in the world and it's what I'm best at. I have pretty bad allergies which contributes to my struggles with singing. I will certainly continue to work on it, however I'm blessed to now be in a band where I am playing lead guitar and the lead singer is so far beyond anything I could muster vocally...

  • could you send me an audio by any chance? :)

  • @playlistadam

I don't actually have a separate audio file for this...I may have once but not anymore. You could certainly download it from the YT video if you want though :)

  • Tutorial please?

  • @lsafirkan

Maybe...however, much like the requests I have received for tabs and such I'll say this: working things out for yourself with lots of study and practice yields a much more satisfying result because you get your own flavor in there...just saying :)

  • Hey man I wanted to ask how you practice rhythm and groove playing like that. Are you playing to a metronome. Are you taking chords and then dissecting them to find your fills? What do you usually practice doing to keep time like that? Great cover btw very emotional.

  • @lowufoband

Hey man, I appreciate it, thanks...as to how I play, well, I do indeed practice to a metronome, but I don't perform to one. Practicing to a metronome is arguably the only tried and true way to ensure that your playing is rock solid on beat, even if you have a natural affinity for rhythm. In terms of fills, yeah I play everything based on chords, so as to keep a rhythm and fullness going on behind whatever lead lines I play. Comes down to countless hours of practice, pretty much..

  • this is amazing man

  • @christophertomicic

    Thanks bro!

  • so much feeling

  • @kellydisilvestro

Thanks! That's what music is all about is feeling...certainly what I base my music on.

  • man that was insane

  • @andreschou

    Thank you!

  • weird voice but great guitar playing. haha

  • @makkoman

Haha thanks...I'm beginning to gather that.

  • This so good man!

  • wow i completely thought you were john mayor before the singing haha. nice job

  • Only reason JM is famous and you're not is because he can play guitar & sing. Your voice kindof makes me laugh. Absolutely wonderful playing though. You've just about got that groove perfect! Put a laid back facade along with closing your mouth so you don't catch a fly, and you have the makings of a studio guitarist. Ahh young talent :)

  • @hookedonpahonics

Thanks man, I hear ya...in a band now with a great lead singer so I'm really hopeful for that...

  • holyyyy awesomeness im drooolingggggg :(((

  • @TheCheeels

Hahaha thanks! I hope that's good? I try my best...:)

  • your groove and guitar playing is incredible

  • @trice8411

Thanks! Yeah, I am a groove guy, no doubt. Pretty much the most important thing to me is a sick groove, and I've developed that style extensively...cheers, thanks for the encouragement!

  • awesome but 2 much reverb on the mic ! :P!

  • @freddyrock4ever12233

Thanks man...yeah, I know what you mean about the reverb...in general, the vocal on this is the only part I'm unsatisfied with. The video was very well shot and the guitar I was pretty happy with. I just didn't sing it that well is the bottom line.

  • 5 people are upset they can't play this good

  • @Morgukai haha amen

  • Nice flops dude. Lol.

  • yea i watched all of ur vids ur an awesome guitar player... im gonna steal ur versions of i dont trust myslef and september gass =) hope thats ok?? lol

  • digging the guitar playing ..singing?

  • @lefte18

You know if there's one thing I regret about this vid its the fact that my voice isn't that great...I had no voice at all that night but we'd set up to film and I wasn't about to reschedule, I wouldn't do that to my film guy. Then again, I've gotten some great compliments on the vocal too, so it really depends on the view of the listener. One thing for sure; I know I need more work as a singer than as guitarist...but thanks for the compliment on that at least.

  • Dude, you rock. honestly. the way you play it. wish i could play like that.

and it's a shame there's no tab of this, no way I can play this by ear. Some other good guitarist should tab it, just for people to be able to play something close to this haha.

  • @AlexHeu

Thanks bro, I appreciate it! Yeah, haha I'm not really a tab guy, but anyone who feels like putting that together, be my guest haha! I figure everything out by ear, its how Mayer, SRV, Clapton, and pretty much all my favorite players learned, plus I love the challenge!

  • @DanielStephenSmock I understand it, I know it just makes you feel better when you figure a song out by ear, instead of just simply google it and play someone else's tabs. And by figuring it out by ear you don't play it exactly like the original, you just play it the way you like the best.

But since I've been playing for three years now, a song like this is a bit to much to figure out by ear. haha.

    Keep playing!

  • @AlexHeu

Yeah, man, you pretty much hit it exactly...it's a matter of desiring individuality and creativity when covering someone else's material (which is a unique challenge) but yeah playing it by ear is very rewarding. It's like you conquered something haha...and you know what? I'm gonna echo your last statement and turn it back at you: keep playing man! You'll get better and better the more you do...

  • Nice jon bro. I like how you made it your own. Great grove on your axe as well !!!!

  • @squatchy69

Thanks man! Groove is key, along with melody its the most important aspect of music...

  • the intro part, like the first 20 seconds I just cant get down and ive been trying for days. could you make a minute long video just close up so i can see how you do it? youre the closest one and the wtli DVD doesnt help at all haha

  • @hoteltech

Not sure if I can (being as though I do not have a cpu at home that has a properly functioning webcam), haha though I get what you mean...what I can do is, in the next few days, I can inbox you the chords I used. They are really simple man, you'd be suprised. Its more about the feel and the touch, which is less explainable.

  • Do you a chart or tabs for this?

    Sheets work too

  • @chaarlietheunicorn

Haha no I'm sorry dude...I wish I could help you but I play all this stuff by ear. I can read music and tabs, but not nearly as well as I can play so there's no way I'd be able to put together an accurate sheet for this...just feel the groove and work it out my friend :)

  • @DanielStephenSmock some help would be very much appreciated though :'(

  • @stewrules

Aw gee man now you're makin' me feel bad haha. I understand the desire for further enlightenment. I do not have the time or capability to write anything out, but for the anyone who asks. I used mainly these chords: Am7 (bar triad with open A in the bass), Dm7+9, Dmaj7 (bar), Fmaj7, G6. I used a ton of other voicings too, but they are mainly passing tones. In addition, I played a lot of octaves and bass lines while slapping the strings and body to get a "drums and bass" section

  • Hey man great cover!!!!

    and I have a question ...

your guitar is a seagull ? can you tell me the model please .

    thank you very much !!!

  • @arturitoaav

Thanks very much! And yes, my guitar is indeed a Seagull, and the model is an S6 CW Cedar. Unfortunately it has been discontinued, at least last time i checked.

  • mm... fuck I was looking for one like this but its ok... thaks again man and keep playing !!!!1

  • @arturitoaav

Yeah dude you got it...and thanks! I most certainly will, 2-3 hours daily haha. Btw, fyi, you can get this guitar without the cutaway (The Seagull S6) which should sound pretty much the same. Just a little trickier to play on the upper frets. Not sure why they discontinued the CW version...but oh well.

  • I wanted to become famous before I saw this. I'm thinking that I should give up that dream now. I'd always be thinking that I'm not you.

  • @64ccd

Hey thanks for the compliment....but don't give up on dreams!...if anything, I'd hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams harder. I hope you achieve yours, and I achieve mine. Let's go get 'em! :)

  • Killer guitar work. Now I'm gonna have to try and learn it ;)

  • @speschk

Thanks very much! And absolutely, learn it...I can assure you, it's fun to play this song my friend :)

  • This is absolutely fantastic, amazing groove you have on this. Are you using a specific tuning might I ask?

  • @stewrules

Hey thanks so much my friend! The groove is a whole lot of fun to play with....and actually this is in standard tuning, believe it or not...just a lot of jazz chords.

  • you voice is so soulful! props man. on everything, vocals and guitar!

  • @Sharpmarkers

Dude thank you so much. My voice was actually shot when I filmed this, so it's really encouraging to hear that you liked it haha...cause I was far more comfortable with the guitar (I always am)...so thanks very much for the encouraging feedback!

  • great stuff bro!!

  • @ndanatswa

    thanks very much!

  • i like your playing very much. i wish you could/ had only make/made an instrumental version.

  • @lasuey

haha thanks very much...I noticed on your page that you like instrumental covers of mayer...but this song is just too much fun to sing my friend! :)

  • WOW I didn't think it had music at first, but wow bluse it is good.

  • @warboop

Well thank you very much! :)

  • great job!

  • @Xapiaxa

    Thanks!! :)

  • Love the guitar work bro. Very nice.

  • @kcpd2050

Thanks so very much dude I appreciate it!

  • wellllll frigging done man. Really really enjoyed it. Love the guitar work. It's rare to find as inspiring of an artist on youtube. If you get the time check my version of lenny-. slow dancing on a burning room on my page. I'm the homeless looking one on the left, playing with my dad.

  • @barefootslider

Hey thanks dude I greatly appreciate it!...music is my supreme passion and I spend hours daily on it, and inspiring people is one of my favorite of the outcomes, so thanks! :)

  • @nerdbomerboy

Haha awesome thanks for the comment!! That's what I love to hear. Good guitar playing inspires me to learn it, and I am happy to be able to inspire others...

  • awesome job man! Thanks for checkin out my vids! You are killer at guitar! im thinking we need to jam haha

  • @cameronmitchellmusic

Thanks a million man, I appreciate it! And dude, in all seriousness if we can ever make that happen, I'd be thrilled to work with you...you're the kind of top caliber musician that I'm always trying to find. Be in touch...

  • This is awesome Dan! I'm glad your sister shared this. Nice camera work in the video too.

  • @someonewhobelieves

Hey thank you very much! I really appreciate it....which of Hannah's friends do I have the honor of addressing? :)

  • guitar playing is genius....but you are way off key vocally.

  • @skeeber33

Haha well thanks for complimenting my playing (what I do best). As to the vocal...funny you should say that because I am super critical of my own voice (I have severe allergies which makes it much harder for me to sing than most people) and I most certainly hear the imperfections in this vocally. However, other than you, everyone has been saying they love my voice. Go figure. Appreciate the honesty though bro. I'll def watch the pitch on my next vid.

  • wonderful.Thanks

  • @foo2Le

    Thank you very much.

  • Hi ! Very cool video, I've enjoyed ! I was looking at your Guitar, I suppose that it's a Seagull ! If it's the case, my steel strings Guitar is a Seagull S6 L.R.Baggs, so I'm not really stonished to hear a very good sound. Well done , Thumbs up ! BYE !

  • @lorenzino1

Hey thanks very much man...and yes, my guitar is indeed a seagull...an S6 CW Cedar (which is no longer in production). They have a very nice, mellow tone for sure. :)

  • @DanielStephenSmock; So we must have exactly the same guitar, a Seagull S6 CW Cedar with a L.R.Baggs preamp. Now, the Seagulls S6 got a Godin Quantum preamp ; even if it's a Godin's preamp, I'm almost sure that L.R.Baggs preamp is better. I say that for having tried to play with a "new" Seagull S6, and when I was plugged, it didn't sound like mine. I'm ok that with the time, mine can only sound well, with the solid top, but the difference was big ! My nylon strings guitar is a Godin too.Later !

  • ok wow...only just now did I figure out how to respond individually to the comments...pardon me I'm new to this...so now I will proceed to do so :)

  • Yeah DanielStephenSmock,....Some MIGHTY FINE VIBES ya got here,...luvin' that jazzy feel to the music ya stroke out of your faithful guitar and the notes comin' from your vocal chords totally HARMONIZE with the guitar,....thumbs up to ya Daniel and thankin' our buddy Nick for the AWESOME share! = )

  • @qualqui

Hey thanks man I really appreciate your very thorough compliment...it is very encouraging; God bless you man. Yeah I love the jazzy, funky stuff...my favorite stuff to play

  • Yo Dan... I do not listen to John Mayer that often but I enjoyed your mastery of the guitar, your voice, and the song itself........I will be eagerly waiting to listen more tunez..keep it up man.

  • @brookbisrat

Hey brook thanks man, its good top hear from you...and you bet, I'll be putting a new vid out once a month.

  • Hey thank you so very much everyone...your comments are very much appreciated!

  • You rock bro...This seriously could be a hit...You're so talented! I'm glad you're on YouTube!

  • @akaHotWheelz

Dude...thanks very much man I appreciate it...see ya around I'm sure...

  • A fantastic performance. Many thanks and thanks to Nick who shared. Hugs..Jan and Susan ♥

  • @weeyin1155

Thank you very much a really appreciate that :)
