  • One of my favorite movie of all time because we all can relate to feeling pain inside and the important people that help us get through the tough times in our lives. I really root Timothy Hutton's character as well as Donald Sutherland and Judd Hirsch.

  • This is by far my favorite scene. I myself have seen a shrink. It proves friendship between two people is priceless and vital in order to not just survive but being able to live and feel alive! I cry every time I see this part because it reminds me where I was with my life and the therapist who saved me from dying, no joke. God Bless you Doc! :-)

  • hey lets watch this great movie......***BuzzKill**

  • This scene always makes me cry...I'm crying right now and I've seen this movie a dozen times

  • @1969kirk Thought he was a psychiatrist...Oh well it doesn't make a diff anyways. LOL

  • I think Judd Hirsch was amazing in the role as his shrink. "You're here and you're alive! Don't tell me you don't feel that?" Awesome line

  • Martin Scorssee is the one negative vote.

  • One of my favorite films of all time. This scene is certainly my favorite.

  • LOL

  • was that bill paxton? lol

  • BUCK!

  • hey man/woman, don't take that from the viewers. I understand the problem, it ain't really that bad - just try to fix it eh? It's emotional and people who look this up are prbbly looking for some emotional release so it's kinda important ... Thanks though, i thik ur the only one who uploaded this scene - u have great taste

  • oh my god, i watched this whole scene while on some other tab there was a physiology site on that had this godam heartpump sound effect, and then I thought that it was to this scene ... for cathartic effect or something, but then the scene finished and it still went on ... my face looked somewhat like 8O ... and i died of laughter

  • I personally think that the hug is the worst part of the whole scene and it's good that it's been cut off.

  • OMG! Timothy Hutton and Judd were excellent. Tim is still an awesome actor and I'm so glad to see him on Leverage. Thanks for uploading even though it is not that complete I managed to download the entire movie elsewhere.

  • "What was the one thing you did?" Great scene. Judd Hirsch is outstanding in this film. Very tough but very true...and he lets Conrad work though it on his own.

  • @PittFan88 thats usually how it's done

  • can anyone tell me where i can find this audio track. cant get the ost anywhere, getting fried searching it. if someone know please suggest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love this part

  • how the hell could you possible cut it there? WTF!!!!????

  • I hung on

    :)

  • beautiful movie!!

    great actor, Timothy Hutton!!

  • great acting by young tim hutton.

  • this scene won this movie best picture over Raging Bull.

  • This is my favorite clip from the movie too. Makes me cry every time.

  • This movie is great-reminds me of my family.

middle and upper class suburb families don't always admit or talk about it, but they are often unreasonable and dysfunctional (depression, repressed guilt, alcoholism, etc).

  • where can you watch the full movie? i need to watch it for class..thanks!

  • The movie is in 12 parts on youtube. Otherwise go to a video store or a library.

  • great

  • Matt Damon and Ben Afflick STOLE the phycristrists senes from Ordinary People and put them in Good Will Hunting!!!! Only differance is Robin Williams was the Judd Hirsh Character!!

  • A four-star movie classic. Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, and Timothy Hutton - all stellar performances. Robert Redford nailed the directing/story telling. Musical score? Top notch. This scene is the movie's climax and indicative of why this movie received the well-deserved Oscar for Best Picture.

  • Dont forget Judd Hirsch too

  • i love this scene. timothy hutton really earned his oscar.

i read this book in enlgish last year and saw clips of the movie, so i've been trying to find it ever since. anyone want to upload? :]

  • Ordinary People is one of the best. Timothy Hutton is incredible no matter how many times I've watched this scene.

  • Cunt

  • Huh? Foulmouth jews, good lord.

  • Retarded American Cunt of which there are many. That is why the rest of the world hates your guts. Cunt.

  • Just let us know when you have a tsunami or aids crisis, we'll be sure to send a few billion your way! Disgusting, parasitic guttersnipe.

  • Delusional, thwarted little man. I pity you. End of correspondence. I refuse to bandy words with the educationally retarded.

  • Wow, talk about sad. You can't argue or prove your points, even against a 'retard' like me. Says more about your anger and sickness than anything. Please get help.

  • Wow so you kill people who you disagree with? I think you may need to invest in a dictionary and look up fascism, then determine who the fascist is! Keep it up though, your mental illness is amusing. Also, don't be afraid to open up a book once in awhile you historically illiterate, violent jackass.

  • i think you have gone through too many crisis like timothy hutton in this film. stand up to your complexes uk gay.

  • ill and racist too... get a life woman, or i fucking get you to lick your pissed carped house in the uk and punch the shit out of you.

  • Ah, the great poetess of the modern age, Elyurita. Whisper your spoken songs, oh great one.

  • oh yes! you caught me then , ops i feel embaraced, not! and i speak spanish too.wow So spam a post uh?

  • Que? I can't interpret this for the life of me. Are you being mean or are you acknowledging your fatal (and linguistic) flaws? Is this Esperanto? I'm all asunder.

  • so your english is good. congrats. but your sicker than timothy hutton here. I think in real life you are very sick person, my condolesence if nobody can cure you.

  • could have gotten the oscar for best actor

  • He did!

  • I agree you completely! This scene wore Mr. Hutton out....

  • Judd Hirsch was incredible.

  • Why do you think Raging Bull is better movie?

  • i finally found the dvd ,is a crazy film in my absolute favorite!

  • SO SAD!

  • I find this scene sad

  • Ordinary People is a masterpiece...one of the greatest films I've ever seen.

  • Comment removed

  • Please, could someone tell me where can I find this whole scene?I want see the final!

  • Have you found it yet?

  • i have bought the dvd!

  • What's the song that plays at the beginning?

  • Pachelbel canon in d

  • No it's not. I'm referring to the song that begins at the start of the video.

  • you bastard! you cut the vid BEFORE THE VERY CLIMAX OF THE WHOLE SCENE. how could this be your favorite scene if you don't show the end. YOU LEFT OUT THE VERY LAST AND BEST LINE OF THE ENTIRE MOVE, WHERE HUTTON CRIES AND HUGS JUDD!!!!

  • I've already stated like 3 times that this was my first time uploading a video to youtube and that I wasn't able to time the video perfectly. This is my favorite scene and if you don't like it then don't watch it.

  • as a matter of fact, this is the best scene of the movie. not hutton hugs judd. This is the scene where he gets cured. This is the scene where he finds the cure. The same cure can be applied to every depressed person. This scene has actually helped many depressed people. The hugging scene is purely for B grade hollywood suckers like you.

  • Agreed. But it was a shame to cut the few last seconds from a 7 min scene.

  • No doubt! What kind nonsense is this?!

  • @organboi he's a bastard cause he messed upa video clip? wow

  • In the aspect of Acting in this scene, I love how Mr. Timothy Hutton wipes his tears on his jacket; Something very realistic.

  • This is my favorite scene as well - very clear where Good Will Hunting got its inspiration

  • " I hung on, I Stayed with the boat" That line gets me everytime

  • Excellent movie. I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out. Acting is top-notch all around. Could have gone over the top. Hutton is great so is Mary Tyler Moore. I like the scene when Hutton's swim coach asks him if he's having any fun. "Fun?" says Hutton. The look on his face is priceless. Redford hit a grand slam with this.

  • The acting is superb. This movie is a class apart. Jude and Timothy are great in this scene.

  • One of the most heart wreching scenes. Hirsch should have won supporting. Redford in his debut was ......great.

Not much else he directed did not suck

  • Thanx soooooo much. This is my favorite scene in any possible movie out there.

  • Thank You, Thunderstruck..... When you're ready, you can post it ..... I'm not in a hurry...... And Thanks.

  • What a scene..... The best of the movie!!!!!..... I know Conrad's feeling and God, It hurts a lot!!!!!.

Can you do me a favor Thunderstruck?..... can you post the closing credits of Ordinary People.... I love Marvin Hamlisch version of Pachelbell's Canon In D at the end of the movie..... It moves me..... believe me. Thanks and God Bless You, Thunderstruck.

  • I'll try to upload it tomorrow after work.

  • Wow... I had barely heard of this movie, but this is just incredible acting. I've been watching this over and over. It's so sad, but they both do a beautiful job.

  • is this the most iconic scene of this movie?

  • Both Judd Hirsch and Timothy Hutton were astounding in this. They should have shared the Oscar that year.

  • I couldn't agree with you more. This movie devastated me the first time I saw it. I cried really hard...sobbing basically! I was blown away at how great Judd Hirsch was in this!

  • Biggest jerk on earth?? I'm pretty sure that I've stated before this was my first time attempting to capture a clip from a movie and post it on youtube. I stopped it at the wrong time. I figured I was close enough. If you don't like it then don't watch it.

  • I don't think you're a jerk

  • just so you know and to make you calm down, they just hug after this clip... Then I think the scene ended there...

  • I know what happends, but thats the best part in the whole movie!

  • ekeb1 you dumbass- post your own clip then instead of complaining. what are you, 12?

  • I am 21. Anyway, I got a little angry back then, because its such a great moment.

    I appolgise to Thunderstruck5990.

  • shit happens

  • One of the best movies ever.

It's so sad to mis a brothetr

  • does anyone know who conrad was talking too when he was saying he tried to kill himself in the bathroom ???....I havent seen the movie but Im doing a monlouge and need to find this movie but cant find it, can anyone help me pleasseee????

  • He was talking to a girl on a date - I forget her name. They were in a McDonald's when it took place. The movie is awesome - you must see it. I also read the book, and I think the movie is better.

  • Really wow that really helps, I need this movie but cant find it at all...ugh...but that really helps alot thanks

  • Jeannine Pratt.

  • Karen was the girl he'd been in the hospital with. Janine is the girl he had the date with at McDonald's and with whom he discussed his attempted suicide. I had ordered this DVD from Amazon this past year and it didn't cost much. I love the scene at McDonalds, although I think Elizabeth McGovern was miscast in the role.

  • lwcogic,

He's talking to his pyschiatrist...Dr. Berger.

  • Timothy Hutton was so good in this movie. I wish the whole thing was posted, I'm reading this book right now.

  • i love this clip, i cried so much when he started saying "i didn't mean it bucky" over and over again.

  • I hung on.

  • I wish someone could put out the whole movie.

  • Gracias por compartir esta pelicula, la vi hace muchos años y sigue conmoviendome hasta el día de hoy, es la mejor pelicula que he visto...

  • I watched the movie and I thought it was great but the book was sooooo much better! Timothy Hutton did great in this clip!

  • Love this clip.

  • Felt bad for Conrad...misses his bro. I remember watching this thinking of my bro.

  • If they did a follow up movie on these characters nearly 30 years later, I wonder what their characters would be like today? I wonder if Beth actually would leave the family for good? I don't think her character was a bad person, she just had trouble expressing love.

  • I remember watching this movie for the first time a while back. Brilliant all the way around, this is such a powerful scene. All the performances are splendid. This movie is real, it strips away all the pretense and b.s. and shows a family affected by tragedy and dysfunctional behavior. It's a classic for all time.

  • I agree, the three members of the family really portrayed the strong feelings of broken relationships. With the tension between the mother/son from neglected love and the hopelessness that the father is stuck in, it is very well acted out. I think the father was the main focus of the story because he gave the movie its real turning point. This is probably my favorite movie.

  • This movie is amazing because it is real. Families pretending to be perfect, and look like that on the outside. But they are not. Real dialogue. Real characters. I read the book after, and it was terrible compared to the movie. Robert Redford did a GREAT job with this movie. Everyone has people in their lives like at least one person in this movie.

  • Well I already saw Google books and it only let me read 2 pages :(. And is in english... I wouldo like to read the book in spanish as possible... but is impossible to find. I love you Conrad-Timothy Hutton

  • i just got this movie downloaded today so i thought id look it up and see if its on here and it is lol. i have no idea why i like the movie.can someone tell me why they like the film please.

  • Anyone seen the movie "Good Will Hunting" all those scenes with Matt Damon & Robin Williams...hmmm?? Don't they kinda remind you of the doctor & patient scenes in Ordinary People??? hmmm? Me thinks Matt & Ben must have got their oscar winning ideas from this movie!?

  • I totally agree. Never thought there was a single original thought to that movie (Good Will Hunting). I remember crying my eyes out the first time I saw this scene.

  • Woh! So I'm not the only who thought the (Robin & Matt) scenes were similar to Judd and Tim's scenes! But, I think Robin Williams was like an instructor and Matt was a "punkass" beer gussing/wiseass punk! lol

  • Amen, amen, AMEN. I'm kind of shocked that Good Will Hunting won the Oscar for screenplay.

  • I have looking for it in many librarys, on internet... but is impossible. I am so sad... I would like to read the book. I love the film :-(

  • Really? I ordered it in my local library in Leicester... tho that was afew yrs ago now.

  • How can I buy the book?? Its important!! I cant find it! Aswer me please!!

  • Borders book store should have the book. Any book store should have it.

  • Google books has this on line.

  • Such an amazing film. I swear, this movie had such an affect on me as a kid. They don't make family issue films like this anymore, you know? Brilliant acting and a sound script. As everyone has said, so unbelieveably underrated :(

  • I think this was after his friend died.

  • Timothy's dad died the year before.

  • If you have access to it, there is a scene that takes place at New Years where Beth and Calvin visit her brother in Houston. They have this massive blowout on the golf course which is one the most powerful scenes in the film, posting that in addition would be great.

  • I disagree. I thought it was far from sappy and I've cringed my way through some terrible melodramas. The ending wasn't wrapped up in a neat little red bow tie with all of the conflicts resolved, there were no contemporary pop songs or lush orchestras playing over emotional scenes, and the performances were rather restrained for the genre. You seem to have great taste in movies and I share in your opinion that Raging Bull was more deserving of the Oscar, but I thought this film was great as well

  • i've only read the book and its definitely one of my favorites...but now its time to get this movie!!!

  • a brilliant film 9/10 at least ,so underated

  • a brilliant film 9/10 at least ,so underated

  • a brilliant film 9/10 at least ,so underated

  • a brilliant film 9/10 at least ,so underated

  • I just watched this movie for the first time last week, so powerful. They don't make family issue movies like this anymore.

  • What a sincere, powerful movie.

  • Hutton deserved the Best Actor Oscar, not Best Supporting Actor. It is also criminal that MTM was snubbed for Best Actress.

  • I was just watching this movie last night and said that THIS was the scene that got him the Oscar - even though he was outstanding throughout the entire movie.

btw - whatever happened to him?

  • Yeah, sorry about missing the embrace at the end =(. This was my first attempt at capturing a video and posting it and I guess I didn't get it just right.

  • So you made a mistake.

How long are you going to punish yourself? When are you going to quit?

But no worries :-) Life goes on and it is good.

  • hahahahahaahha. good one.

  • This scene and movie is so powerful it gets me all the time. I finaly rented it last month from the library and I was shocked on how good and powerful it was. I bought it a few weeks after. I was so surprised that Timothy Hutton was in this movie, and won the oscar. I've only seen Timothy in supporting roles like French Kiss, Kinsey, The Secret Window. His performance in this was so powerful I respect him more for his work. Does anyone know where to find his acceptance speech.

  • The is one of my favorite scenes of all-time and a friend once said it was scary how much I reminded her of Conrad, the Timothy Hutton character. Which is a blessing and a curse I suppose.

Btw the ending is cut off as has been mentioned. Judd Hirsch says, "I am. Count on it." And then they embrace.

  • Feelings are scary and sometimes their scary. This is so true.

  • this is the most powerful family dynamic movie I have every seen..amazing, simply amazing thanks for posting this!

  • Hutton is marvelous in this movie. I get chills every time I see this scene. I almost wanted to become an actor because of the extraordinary performances in this movie!

  • Thanks for posting this scene. I was looking for it, and glad I found it. This is one of the greatest and most powerful movie scenes of all-time.

  • You can. If your in high school, take AP Psychology or any other psychology/sociology courses. You also have to be a pretty good science and englsih and take courses that are challenging, hence A.P.

I love this character. Judd Hirsch was really good. I think the greatest quality a psychologist can have is the desire to help people and assist in helping them overcome their problems/issues. Go for it.

  • thanks thanks. amazing...except missed very moving embrace at the end of this scene...

  • thanks thanks. amazing...except missed very moving embrace at the end of this scene...

  • Could you please post more scenes from this film? That would be great, thanks, this is amazing

  • Stunning movie. So well acted. This is a great scene. Sets my heart racing....tears....

  • this clip is absolutely outstanding. timothy hutton really deserved that oscar.

  • Absolutely. An Oscar winner at 20...amazing.

  • May be the greatest movie EVER!

  • 'Flawlesss' is right.

    Not a single false step.

I cannot see any of the actors in any role without recalling their part in this one.

  • Perhaps the best movie of all time. It's way underappreciated, but the acting is flawless.

  • it is good, believe me.

  • thank you, great scene, great movie

  • Tim Hutton is so friggin brilliant, he just breaks your heart

  • "You know...come on you know..."

  • thanks for puttin' this up, a great film!
