it taken all these years for the greater community to realize pokiw machines are an evil fukin thing. Unbelievable.
Do we really need 7 pokie machine venues in a 10km radius open till late hours in out city suburbs (yes, working class suburbs). Common, it doesn't take a genius to work out who the victims are.
I can't wait for those un-australian drink driving laws to be repealed either. Why should the Government tell me I can't drink and drive? That's Un Australian. I'm only hurting myself!
Should the state get to decide how people get to live there lives? How about the damage caused by drunks on our roads and in the streets? Should our precious mead be taken away because some people cannot control their lives? How about the damage of being under paid and having to put your kids into child care so both parents have to work? How about censorship of the internet - "getup" are your just another control - taking away our freedom? The undecided......
I seriously have to question why some people support keeping the Pokies industry the way it currently is. Wait until they lose their house, their marriage, their mental heath and we'll see how much they support the industry then. Sometimes people should just care a bit more about their fellow man other than thinking only by themselves
We Love Pokies Reform want to send our Federal MP's a clear Valentines Day message that many Australians support the need for pokies reform to counter the lobbying of Clubs Australia.
Go to our Facebook page to order the number of Valentines Days cards you want.
We will print the cards for you and take them to Canberra.
On February 14th 2012, we will arrange them into a HUGE heart on the front lawn of Parliament House.
You can also order cards via email by writing to, nellgwynn55@bigpond.com
rob u blind lol. its about time someone stuck it to the clubs. they're no better than drug dealers or bikie gangs. putting on the front that they 'do good' for the commuinity whilst fleecing people of their mortgages. and to the boofhead football commentators who go on and on about kids sport, well how do you explain the fact that sport thrives in WA? it doesnt have pokies in clubs OR pubs!
maybe you east coasters could learn from WA instead of trying to take all our money from us
"Exploiting the weak" thats un australian to call others weak, and I thought I lived in a country where I could spend my money how I liked but unless it's being spent on cruelty free or organic products its called robbing people.
Rob U. Blind? look at the perception of these getup idiots. Everyones stealing money except for the green economic charlatans who grovel over government grants.
Speaking from experience 9 out of 10 people who play pokies have a temporary or an ongoing addiction to the machines
It's easy to decipher the industry. Pokie venues are on every corner in lower class suburbs next to bottle shops, but there not in Brighton (little tel aviv) or south yarra were people are well off financially.
Think about it.
The only gambling that should be available and allowed here in Melbourne is the crown casino.
@ChoonDSW 9 out of 10 people you say, how did you come to that conclusion? meaning almost 20million out of 23million of aussies are addicts of gambling machines? It's strange how no one mentions anything about betting on the horses or dogs or even the lotteries which are government owed and the money collected goes where?? at least with pokies a lot of the moeny goes back into the community but hey we won't speak about that.
i said 9 out of 10 people ***who play the pokies*** not 9 out of ten people in Australia.
I have asked many pokie players why they continue to play even after losing their house, car and family, they look at me with a blank expression on their face and give me a vague answer.
Your comments tome clearly indicate you haven't first hand seen for yourself the dramatic effects pokie machines (not gambling in general) has on vulnerable people
FINALLY!!! AN INTELLIGENT ADVERTISEMENT THAT FIGHTS AGAINST THOSE RIDICULOUS "Un-Australian" ADS!!! Seriously, I'm so sick of seeing all the bullshit about how "a license to punt is Un-Australian" - makes me sick, since through its logic "Australian" basically becomes synonymous with the term "fucking stupid".
If you're so outraged about this restriction, then there's a good chance you already have a problem. Surely there's other things to do than throw your coins into a wishing well.
oh get the fuck over it let people live their lives if they wanna waste their money on the pokies you can't tell them otherwise I'm sick of people butting into shit which is none of their business.
Whilst I agree problem gambling is a problem, should we ban all businesses/industries that do this? Thats effectively all their doing and what any business intends to do- make a profit!
It's simple. Before you put your notes in the machine please sent it to my you-tube account so I can myself a bottle of Absinthe and go to the brothel.Your beloved money won't be wasted.Cheers
@Geekman333 I forgot why I put the 'racists' part in. Anyway...you're an idiot if you support pokies and the wealth of the already wealthy at the cost of problem gamblers. Hey...let's legalise heroin while we're at it shall we? They come from privately owned poppies eh?
@Emocliae agreed, in this day and age we live in such a multicultural society that there is no all-encompassing definition for 'australian', let alone 'un-australian'
@getdownaustralia stupid conservative is stupid. Pokies represent the systematic destruction of people's lives in the selfish pursuit of profit, pure and simple.
But are not those persons in the club at the own " Free Will" or are we to get government to control every aspect of our lives....sounds Fabian to me or should I say Social Justice
@Ozipeter Absolutely people have free will, however we as a community have a responsibility to work together to provide support and atleast have discussion about those issues which cause harm to individuals and those who are vulnerable.
Problem gambling has a range of resulting consequences, which often dont just affect the gambler themselves. Entire families and communities are affected. That IS EVERYONES business. It's a significant problem.
@Ozipeter debating this hard? You will have provide further clarification on the point you are trying to make, because I am not following.
My comments are specifically in relation to Problem Gambling because that is what this video refers to. As to what else I may or may not have an interest in advocating for or against - you wouldn't know, because that is not the point at hand, is it?
@MissLouella Again why do we need government to step in and tell me where and when I can spend my money. I thought our privacy laws stopped anyone from prying to what I do as long as its legal. This legis could go anywhere, gay steam rooms , TAB , what about the damage alcohol does , why dont we have a limit on that. My argument is where do you stop with this trojan horse.
@MissLouella The point that I am making is that I feel the effort that is put into these mindless self gratifying gamblers trying to win some money and then blaming us for their habits. If you change any of the arguments of this to hard drugs , alcohol , sex even , you will be laughed out. But for Gamblers its never their fault. where in the world is self control gone or have we all gone mad and government have to save us from ourselves.
@Ozipeter Are you living in the real world? Do you think the consequences of these gambling addicts never reach their families, communities etc? Think a little harder.
Where does it end? Why does the minority get to change how we live our lives. For those with self control soon with no beer, wine, internet or freedom of expression......
@MissLouella Problems with Hard Drugs like Heroin have a range of resulting consequences, which oftern dont just affect the drug user themselves. Entire families and communities are affected. That IS Everyones Business. Its a significant problem
Getup just want the Pokie legislation passed so that Wilkie will continue to support the ALP for the next 2 years before the next Federal election. Next Federal Poll will see the ALP nearly wiped out, and Abbott become our fittest PM for many years.
@argebarse On the contrary, if Gillard doesn't turn Australia into an economic wasteland, and if there is anything left in the till, Tony can save this country, get rid of the Carbon Tax and NBN waste, turn back the boats and economic freeloaders, but its going to take some time to recover from this economic damage that the ALP has wreaked on Australia... the ALP will not govern again for a long time, after the blantant lies to win Govt in 2010
@argebarse Typical ALP leftie, that's the best you can come up with? Tony Abbott is gonna be the best, healthiest and one of the longest serving PM's so get used to it...your medicine is coming... it won't taste nice but it will save you and Australia. ALP primary vote is bouncing along the bottom, lower than even that Arrogant pig Keating... beginning to think Gillard might just be a Liberal as the ALP are gonna be in the wilderness for so long after this little wrecking job of a Govt.
@breadbaker226 You do realise that your placing the economy, which was is essentially an imaginative system made up so peoples trade to be far over things like healthcare, and education? Right?
Also why are you allowed to turn back people from war torn countries?
International law states, that everyone has the right to seek asylum. If you were from Iraq and you had to leave for fear of your life, would you want another country to turn you away be they don't want to deal with it?
@MelovElmo These so called Reugees are not in reality...they are economic refugees with a lot of money. Also another reason they are not refugees, is that they should try the nearest safe country, but instead they all head for the glittering 5 star hotel so far away called Australia run by this fool Gillard. Your first comment I could not understand... didn't make sense....
@breadbaker226 Do you really believe today tonight, I mean REALLY? All of middle east is in shit, if they walked across the border they would enter another war torn country. We have no right to complain about refugees. The UK has an average of 40,000 refugees per year. At the moment we average about 8,000. NO refugee gets a bonus simply for seeking asylum, they get the same money as normal aussies do. No way can they afford 5 star hotel treatment.
@MelovElmo I can't believe what a moron you are... there are other countries between us and the middle east and us that are not at war. Why should they get what us Aussies get????? To them it (Australia) IS a 5 star hotel. Look at all the problems refugees bring with them... to our country and Britain... riots, and all other baggage from their past. How about the saying that we should look after our own first???? What about our pensioners, who paid tax, first!!! Wakeup mate!
@ohyeahhoneysheband Well at least I'm a cunt (something useful) whereas you are useless, like an ashtray on a motorbike, fuckoff back to the flea bitten, pox ridden hole you crawled out of..... and get off welfare while your at it
@breadbaker226 You're not useful, you sound as if you've been subsidised by the taxpayer for years all while complaining about the state of this country -- you are a racist, useless and stupid cunt. Btw never been on welfare in my life pal, I work 30 hours a week to put myself through a Bachelor of Pharmacy, which is WAY more than you're ever going to do in your sad life.
@ohyeahhoneysheband Well cunt face I have done 12 years of TAFE in electronic field, and i have paid more than my fair share of taxes over working full time and more, over 33 years of different jobs, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it. Sad little life you wish... hahahaha
@breadbaker226 You sound like you're from a different era where everyone is still a racist, sexist, homophobic close-minded fool. I'm not the loser pal, you are. And where do you get off on calling me a wog, for starters that term isnt even offensive anymore, secondly, I'm not even a wog and thirdly, I'm more Australian than you because I actually believe in human rights, the fair go and not having a monochromatic society. Btw, TAFE for 12 years? How many times did you fail your courses? ;)
@ohyeahhoneysheband Ha typical loser, I never failed any courses, I was even top in 1 subject at Meadowbank TAFE doing Electrical Engineering. No your not I am more Australian that you, and don't pull that sick Racist shit with me woggy because it won't wash hahahaha
@ohyeahhoneysheband Correct, except for Paul, Ian, Ron, Andrew, Allan, (Fiona ex male), all my colleagues at work, Craig, Shane, mmm reminds me to check FB, all my ex BHHS school group and.... whereas you are a lonely little soul.... oh also my wife and her family, the scouts group and her scouts friends and.....
@ohyeahhoneysheband For a start I only listed some of them, secondly it was you who suggested that topic... sounds like a guilty conscience there.... eh eh?
@ohyeahhoneysheband You first, I am more Australian than you dipshit, I was born in Sydney, my parents were born in Australia and my grandparents were born in Austraia you wog, get fucked... fuck off loser
When I see kids going hungry, locked in cars at the clubs, and here of more suicides because of this predatory retailing crap; I get mad.
As for the patronizing comments about a nanny state; it's obvious the only politcs some of these boof-heads are aware of is Labor and Liberal. (What an extensive repertoire!)
The community cost of this addiction is huge. The community has a duty to act on it; just like drugs.
@mudchair16 obviously they're too irresponsible to look after their kids, if they can't even take care of their own life by not putting all their money in a pokie machine, then how can we trust them to look after their kids? I see it exactly how this ad portrays it, giving your money directly to the pokie machine company and if people want to do that on the small chance that they win big, let them.
@mudchair16 well it's not about me it's the principle of the thing, it's about the government being able to impose restrictions on the services companies offer. If you limit what sort of gaming services a company can offer, what's to stop them from limiting other products or services?
you would allow the state to take the children away from a drug addict that spent all their money on drugs, correct? how is this different? and don't say the problem is with the pokies being addictive, because of the huge number of people that like to have a punt, very few of them have a problem with it. the problem is irresponsibility.
Let's all live in Simon Sheikh's world and we can be mindless drones. That's what Getup wants because I dont know if this will come as a shock to anyone but Getup is a front for the Labor party. Most of their so called 'campaigns' oppose the coalition policy's. Coincidence? I think not.
@OwenVinni How on Earth is this Nanny state stuff? It is the opposite you nincompoop. Noone controls the gambler under this proposal. In fact, the gambler has more power! Jesus, you are a thick head.
The biggest issue with these proposed poker machine reforms is not if they will work or not work. Instead they highlight that we are a nation without any capacity to sit, explore and compromise in our decision making. Why is this very complex issue boiled down to 'for' and 'against'? Clubs Australia has not conceded any merit in this proposal and that, in itself, says it all for me. As someone who works with people on society's fringes, empowering gamblers, as this proposal does, is genius.
@2WAYFM This is how I feel as well. Why the hell can't anyone in this country have a decent discussion on what WOULD work and be acceptable rather than saying NO to every single idea that is proposed.
As it stands this legislation has been considered very carefully and has a good chance of working, and at minimal cost.

What a lot of wankers making comments here don't realise in this is NOT the USA. If they want to spout Tea Party rhetoric they should move to where they obviously would rather live.

People have to take more responsibility for their actions and stop being so quick to blame everything and everyone else for their own weaknesses. It's YOUR fault you're addicted to pokies, YOU are the one making the choices. I work 2 jobs and will happily play $20 a month maximum over a beer with mates and have done so for years. Pathetic no hopers are ruining this for everyone with half a dose of common sense.
@LibertyDownUnder so your argument is basically that NSW Clubs should have a piece of he action? That it's OK to exploit problem gamblers. In any event you're plain wrong - in an Australian state where there are almost no pokies (other than the casino) the average amount gambled is a lot lower. There is a good chance these reforms will work and they are worth a try.
@LibertyDownUnder according to the ABS... its a reputable source and it makes logical sense. People from WA lose substantially less on average than other states. And the hurting casual punters is a nonsense claim - causal can go on low intensity machines and won't even notice the difference. This is all about established vest interests protecting their patch, protecting their revenues. WA functions perfectly OK with no pokies (essentially) - it has hotels, junior sports and Eagles/Dockers
@johnosandra Because it's all just about you, isn't it mate? You're right. Fuck the rest of them. Fuck the families that a suffer thanks to out-of-control gambling. As long as you're happy.
@LibertyDownUnder You're right. Tomorrow I will go to a club, wait for a gambler to walk by then mug him. He's just going to let the club rob him anyway, so why don't I get in first? Thanks for setting me straight. Fuck the poor. Fuck social justice. Let people solve their own problems.
@310sucks, if you rob the gambler - it's AGAINST his choice. If he gambles it's HIS choice.
This is the difference. People in a free society are free to make their choices and mistakes.
People in a closed society have their choices dictated by a central Government.
Yesterday it was light bulbs, today it's pokies, tomorrow it will be fried foods, sugar, salt, then risque websites, 'bad' music, big cars, big houses, etc etc.
@LibertyDownUnder .. Government has a right to regulate areas of society that cause harm to more than the individual (Ciggies, Alcohole, Pokies ect..).
Why do we need machines where people loose up to $1100 an hour!
Most countries regulate gambelling 'cause they know the damage they do.
This WILL WORK and that is why the clubs oppose it.
@LibertyDownUnder Mate that sounds great but who pays for these mistakes? The kids who go hungry? The wife/husband who is deceived and loses their lives savings through no fault? The taxpayer (you/me) who fund government pensions that are pumped through pokies? Children and relatives who received little or no inheritance because it has been pissed away? The 'people in a free society are free to make choice' type of response is callous and unthinking - of course exploitation matters! Please!
@LibertyDownUnder And you're ignoring WA - this state gets along perfectly OK with almost no pokie revenues churning through the economy, as do many other countries. Pokie revenues, apart from being unhealthy for hundreds of thousands of people, are totally unnecessary from a community perspective - all supposed community benefits of pokies is just smoke/mirrors. and we're not talking banning them altogether anyway, just reducing the rate at which people lose, and helping the mugs set limits.
@LibertyDownUnder That is an immature stretch of logic. By your modelling then we should do away with all public safety laws and censorship regulations. You are living in a SOCIETY. It's not just about you, you, you, and what you want. It is what is best for the greater good and social cohesion. If you want the total will to do whatever, go live in the middle of the outback. Then you'll learn the hard way what true freedom really feels like.
@310sucks, just about every atrocity in history was done in the name of the "greater good", so be careful what you wish for.
I'm not suggesting we get rid of all safety laws, I'm saying we should resist the temptation of getting a central Government to restrict more and more activities.
Today it's something we don't approve of, like pokies, tomorrow it may be something you do - like fast food, alcohol, or even bottled water (yes, this is on the agenda too).
@LibertyDownUnder You're ignoring the logic of the reform. All it asks is for a pokie player on a high intensity to pre-commit to a limit, to turn their mind to how much are risking in a sober moment before starting. To set aside money for food/rent/school fees. What is wrong with that? How is that so offensive or onerous? It isn't. It doesn't impose on anyone! And this 'hurt' you say will be felt by clubs makes me laugh. Mate that 'hurt' for the club represents far less hurt for the community.
@chris674, and what makes you think that once this law is in place, the Government won't add more and more laws to restrict pokies? These things start small, and grow like a cancer.
This step won't stop the problem, and a few months later another politician will stand up and say "lets make the rules even tougher".
"Today Tonight" had a show 2 nights ago about wanting to tax all foods according to their fat content. The pokies laws are trojan horses for more and more of these laws.
@LibertyDownUnder That's alarmist nonsense. A laughable red herring. You can apply that argument to almost ANY government policy to regulate. I did see the story on taxing fatty food in other countries. So what - it's not Australia and I'm open to the idea. I'm slightly overweight and like fatty foods. If we had taxes for really fatty food would I care? No. It is probably logical - fatty foods eaters use more publicly funded health services and therefore should pay more taxes in this way.
@chris674, the fat tax will apply for everything, even butter, cooking oil, meats, prepared meals etc.
Eventually there will be a tax that will hurt you, or your job or a your customer etc. and by then you will have no chance of fighting back against this increasing beaurocracy.
But if you don't have a problem with a central office applying arbitrary taxes on us, then I don't have much to add here.
and we're not event talking a tax here anyway...it's a regulation for harm minimisation measures, measures you (and people like you) just assert won't work. The measures seem pretty sensible, logical and half a chance to work. And no harm in trying - to the contrary there is great harm in not trying. People who are barking the loudest about this are those parasites who make a living off problem gamblers
@LibertyDownUnder you actually watch and take in today tonight? it is just bullshit sensationalist journalism full of biased smut. unlike what most morons think, tax is actually a good thing because government revenue is what is required for public infrastructure. As far as I'm concerned, taxing gambling companies, unhealthy food corporations, etc as well as the mining and climate tax can only be good because the gov has developed compensation schemes for individuals like you and I.
@aektzis91, people choose to gamble, it's their call.
The Government wastes 1/3 of it's revenue on Centrelink and other non-productive offices. If it really needs the money for roads, it can take it from there, instead of looking for more and more creative ways of taxing us.
@LibertyDownUnder but its not a tax on individuals, its a tax on the gambling machines themselves. if anything most people would benefit because there will essentially be a limit on the amount of money wasted on the pokies.
@aektzis91, thousands already choose to go online anyway. This limitation will just send more people away from the clubs towards gambling sites who gives nothing ot the state.
@LibertyDownUnder Your argument lost all credibility when you made it abundantly clear you believe Today Tonight 'investigations' which are little more than twisted words and scaremongering. The 'fat tax' is not even in discussion in government at the moment and if it ever occurs (which i am almost certain it never will due to constant pressure and lobbying from fast food giants etc.) it will be in nations best interests
@310sucks i dont work 40 hour weeks and i dont drink beer son
well ban alcohol too because it destroy's lives
the economy is fucked and all swanny wants to do is collect participation awards and converse irrelevant shit in a room with a bunch of half asleep old men
the liberals dont fuck around with nanny reform put forward by incompetent independants
problem gambling should not be on the agenda when the economy is in the worst state for 70 years
@johnosandra The economy is fucked? Worst it's been in 70 years? Australia is actually doing pretty well. However since you're so fond of American Tea Party Rhetroic you're probably thinking of the USA, the country you really should fly to. You'll feel more at home there.
If you ever read Robert Goodman's books The luck business you would see the pokie manufs used the exact same tactics in the U.S. only over there they pretend to provide benefits to native american communities. Even so, pokies are nowhere near as ubiquitous in the U.S. as they are in Australia and it is because of strong local Government and commercial pressure. In Europe you hardly ever seen pokies outside of casinos. Australian state Governments are addicted to gambling revenue
A good example of this is on pensioners pay day, walk into any rsl and watch the poor things blowing there pension money in the pokies. I dont know how the rsl can live with themselves, is this what the anzacs gave there life for? so the rsl can suck the life out of the elderly patrons....
My mum and Dad were happy when my brother found a good job and moved out of the house into a new aprtment a year later he was back, he had blown all his wages on the pokies and owed 30 grand, one day i went to the club and saw him playing it was the most disgusting thing i have seen in my life, he was moving back and forth between pokies eyeing each one trying to sum up if they were winners or not...... pokies are pure evil
In support of HG Nelson's campaign to introduce the Ryan Tandy Medal for those selfless heroes who put their wages, their mortgages, their futures though the pokies to keep our clubs strong.
@bodysnatcher0421 Except when it comes to the road/traffic laws, insurance, banking regulation, OH&S, food safety, cigerrettes, trade practices and labour laws the government cannot protect people from themselves!
Pre-commitment is commonsense. Obviously people are going to think more rationally when they aren't sitting in front of the thing they're actually addicted to. If it wasn't going to work, the clubs wouldn't be so scared. Fact is they make too much money from problem gamblers. Recreational gamblers aren't going to be turned away- it's not going to apply to low intensity machines. The lengths addicted people go to in order to gamble are truly sad. Shame on the clubs industry and the NRL!
Gambling problems are magnified by our financial system. The average punter sees the bankers, stockbrokers, hedge fund, forex traders making billions for nothing. Until recently housing speculators as well. She/he wants her/his share. The whole system is about to collapse, we have neglected the producers of our society, the farmers and manufacturers. Paper money will be worthless they have printed far too much, you can’t eat it.Don’t get sidetracked, read Atlas Shrugged.
Why cannot people gamble for peanuts, or better still for nothing. Friends used to meet in houses and have a lot of fun gambling in various forms for nothing. Why should certain moraless owners of pubs be priveliged to exploit human weaknesses.
@decalco137 what like tobacconists and supermarkets, cigarettes are perfectly legal. Dealers of the right drugs are called entrepreneurs. Cigarettes like pokies won't be banned the government rakes in too much in the way of tax revenue no matter what the short or long term effects be on a society.
my family works in the club industry in aus, people sometimes forget that r.s.l. clubs in aus have taken a huge hit the last couple of years with the smoking laws and don't forget the pokie tax. so much so my father lost his job running a smaller bowls club because the smaller clubs can't take these hits and keep their doors open. I agree that problem gambling is bad, but don't forget rsl clubs put their profits back into the community ( unlike pubs ). All actions have consequences.
I wouldn't care if they banned them forever. We don't need gambling of any kind. It just creates a society with more problems than it can ever cure with it's half hearted attempts at charity. The real problem is not just the people who are addicted to gambling, it's the governments who are addicted to the income from it. I'd rather they taxed us more and banned gambling forever. And used that money to help those in need.
it taken all these years for the greater community to realize pokiw machines are an evil fukin thing. Unbelievable.
Do we really need 7 pokie machine venues in a 10km radius open till late hours in out city suburbs (yes, working class suburbs). Common, it doesn't take a genius to work out who the victims are.

maybe you east coasters could learn from WA instead of trying to take all our money from us

Nice work!

Ever asked a pokie player why they keep gamling?

Ozipeter 4 months ago 2
@Ozipeter Absolutely people have free will, however we as a community have a responsibility to work together to provide support and atleast have discussion about those issues which cause harm to individuals and those who are vulnerable.
Problem gambling has a range of resulting consequences, which often dont just affect the gambler themselves. Entire families and communities are affected. That IS EVERYONES business. It's a significant problem.

@MissLouella Wow I dont see any of you debating this hard about hard drugs being legalised. based on this argument.

MissLouella 3 months ago
@MissLouella Again why do we need government to step in and tell me where and when I can spend my money. I thought our privacy laws stopped anyone from prying to what I do as long as its legal. This legis could go anywhere, gay steam rooms , TAB , what about the damage alcohol does , why dont we have a limit on that. My argument is where do you stop with this trojan horse.
Ozipeter 2 months ago
@Ozipeter government wants you to spend your money gambling, they get 40% of what goes through the poker machines
hudstar2011 2 months ago
@MissLouella The point that I am making is that I feel the effort that is put into these mindless self gratifying gamblers trying to win some money and then blaming us for their habits. But for Gamblers its never their fault. where in the world is self control gone or have we all gone mad and government have to save us from ourselves.

@MelovElmo These so called Reugees are not in reality...they are economic refugees with a lot of money. Your first comment I could not understand... didn't make sense....
breadbaker226 3 months ago
@breadbaker226 Do you really believe today tonight, I mean REALLY? All of middle east is in shit, if they walked across the border they would enter another war torn country. NO refugee gets a bonus simply for seeking asylum, they get the same money as normal aussies do. No way can they afford 5 star hotel treatment.

domvasta 4 months ago
you would allow the state to take the children away from a drug addict that spent all their money on drugs, correct? how is this different? and don't say the problem is with the pokies being addictive, because of the huge number of people that like to have a punt, very few of them have a problem with it. the problem is irresponsibility.

So Getup wants to ban pokies. What do they think people will do with the money instead? Invest in their kids education?
They will just blow all it online, piss it away, put it on the horses or find illeagal venues that still let them punt.
Getup will find any excuse to raise donations, and use them to back the Greens & Labor.
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder so your argument is basically that NSW Clubs should have a piece of he action? That it's OK to exploit problem gamblers. In any event you're plain wrong - in an Australian state where there are almost no pokies (other than the casino) the average amount gambled is a lot lower. There is a good chance these reforms will work and they are worth a try.
chris674 5 months ago
@chris674, the average amount gambeled is lower according to who? How to know how much is placed on online gaming sites?
People are people, if you ban one thing - they'll do another. You ban alcohol - people will do drugs.
Getting the state involved will only hurt the casual punters, the clubs, and in the long term - the gamblers who turn to illeagal forms of betting.
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder according to the ABS... its a reputable source and it makes logical sense. People from WA lose substantially less on average than other states. And the hurting casual punters is a nonsense claim - causal can go on low intensity machines and won't even notice the difference. This is all about established vest interests protecting their patch, protecting their revenues. WA functions perfectly OK with no pokies (essentially) - it has hotels, junior sports and Eagles/Dockers

@310sucks, the problem gamblers will find a way to keep gambling. As always, this will only hurt those looking for some harmless fun.
The only ones to benefit from this will be the new Government departments set up to administer & enforce all these new laws.
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder You're right. Tomorrow I will go to a club, wait for a gambler to walk by then mug him. He's just going to let the club rob him anyway, so why don't I get in first? Thanks for setting me straight. Fuck the poor. Fuck social justice. Let people solve their own problems.
310sucks 5 months ago
@310sucks, if you rob the gambler - it's AGAINST his choice. If he gambles it's HIS choice.
This is the difference. People in a free society are free to make their choices and mistakes.
People in a closed society have their choices dictated by a central Government.
Yesterday it was light bulbs, today it's pokies, tomorrow it will be fried foods, sugar, salt, then risque websites, 'bad' music, big cars, big houses, etc etc.
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder .. Government has a right to regulate areas of society that cause harm to more than the individual (Ciggies, Alcohole, Pokies ect..).
Why do we need machines where people loose up to $1100 an hour!
Most countries regulate gambelling 'cause they know the damage they do.
This WILL WORK and that is why the clubs oppose it.
stevie80au 5 months ago
@stevie80au, in most countries that gambling is regulated, people find other ways of hurting themselves.
With gambling in clubs at least they have clear advice on how to get help.
Of course it will hurt the clubs, but it won't "work" with the problem.
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder Mate that sounds great but who pays for these mistakes? The kids who go hungry? The wife/husband who is deceived and loses their lives savings through no fault? The taxpayer (you/me) who fund government pensions that are pumped through pokies? Children and relatives who received little or no inheritance because it has been pissed away? The 'people in a free society are free to make choice' type of response is callous and unthinking - of course exploitation matters! Please!
chris674 5 months ago
@chris674, ok, so what's preventing them from regulating fatty foods as a next step? Sugar, salt?
These are all considered harmful, should the Government step in?
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder And you're ignoring WA - this state gets along perfectly OK with almost no pokie revenues churning through the economy, as do many other countries. Pokie revenues, apart from being unhealthy for hundreds of thousands of people, are totally unnecessary from a community perspective - all supposed community benefits of pokies is just smoke/mirrors. and we're not talking banning them altogether anyway, just reducing the rate at which people lose, and helping the mugs set limits.
chris674 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder That is an immature stretch of logic. By your modelling then we should do away with all public safety laws and censorship regulations. You are living in a SOCIETY. It's not just about you, you, you, and what you want. It is what is best for the greater good and social cohesion. If you want the total will to do whatever, go live in the middle of the outback. Then you'll learn the hard way what true freedom really feels like.
310sucks 5 months ago
@310sucks, just about every atrocity in history was done in the name of the "greater good", so be careful what you wish for.
I'm not suggesting we get rid of all safety laws, I'm saying we should resist the temptation of getting a central Government to restrict more and more activities.
Today it's something we don't approve of, like pokies, tomorrow it may be something you do - like fast food, alcohol, or even bottled water (yes, this is on the agenda too).
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder You're ignoring the logic of the reform. All it asks is for a pokie player on a high intensity to pre-commit to a limit, to turn their mind to how much are risking in a sober moment before starting. To set aside money for food/rent/school fees. What is wrong with that? How is that so offensive or onerous? It isn't. It doesn't impose on anyone! And this 'hurt' you say will be felt by clubs makes me laugh. Mate that 'hurt' for the club represents far less hurt for the community.
chris674 5 months ago
@chris674, and what makes you think that once this law is in place, the Government won't add more and more laws to restrict pokies? These things start small, and grow like a cancer.
This step won't stop the problem, and a few months later another politician will stand up and say "lets make the rules even tougher".
"Today Tonight" had a show 2 nights ago about wanting to tax all foods according to their fat content. The pokies laws are trojan horses for more and more of these laws.
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder That's alarmist nonsense. A laughable red herring. You can apply that argument to almost ANY government policy to regulate. I did see the story on taxing fatty food in other countries. So what - it's not Australia and I'm open to the idea. I'm slightly overweight and like fatty foods. If we had taxes for really fatty food would I care? No. It is probably logical - fatty foods eaters use more publicly funded health services and therefore should pay more taxes in this way.
chris674 5 months ago
@chris674, the fat tax will apply for everything, even butter, cooking oil, meats, prepared meals etc.
Eventually there will be a tax that will hurt you, or your job or a your customer etc. and by then you will have no chance of fighting back against this increasing beaurocracy.
But if you don't have a problem with a central office applying arbitrary taxes on us, then I don't have much to add here.
LibertyDownUnder 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder No i don't have a problem with this. They already centrally impose takes - it's called taxation law and it's enforced by the ATO.
chris674 5 months ago
and we're not event talking a tax here anyway...it's a regulation for harm minimisation measures, measures you (and people like you) just assert won't work. The measures seem pretty sensible, logical and half a chance to work. And no harm in trying - to the contrary there is great harm in not trying. People who are barking the loudest about this are those parasites who make a living off problem gamblers
chris674 5 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder you actually watch and take in today tonight? it is just bullshit sensationalist journalism full of biased smut. unlike what most morons think, tax is actually a good thing because government revenue is what is required for public infrastructure. As far as I'm concerned, taxing gambling companies, unhealthy food corporations, etc as well as the mining and climate tax can only be good because the gov has developed compensation schemes for individuals like you and I.
aektzis91 3 months ago
@aektzis91, people choose to gamble, it's their call.
The Government wastes 1/3 of it's revenue on Centrelink and other non-productive offices. If it really needs the money for roads, it can take it from there, instead of looking for more and more creative ways of taxing us.
LibertyDownUnder 3 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder but its not a tax on individuals, its a tax on the gambling machines themselves. if anything most people would benefit because there will essentially be a limit on the amount of money wasted on the pokies.
aektzis91 3 months ago
@aektzis91, thousands already choose to go online anyway. This limitation will just send more people away from the clubs towards gambling sites who gives nothing ot the state.
LibertyDownUnder 3 months ago
@LibertyDownUnder Your argument lost all credibility when you made it abundantly clear you believe Today Tonight 'investigations' which are little more than twisted words and scaremongering. The 'fat tax' is not even in discussion in government at the moment and if it ever occurs (which i am almost certain it never will due to constant pressure and lobbying from fast food giants etc.) it will be in nations best interests

Even so, pokies are nowhere near as ubiquitous in the U.S. as they are in Australia and it is because of strong local Government and commercial pressure. In Europe you hardly ever seen pokies outside of casinos. Australian state Governments are addicted to gambling revenue

"And I wish I, wish I knew the right words
To blow up the pokies and drag them away
'Cause they're taking the food off your table
So they can say that the trains run on time".
Trains don't run on time. Children don't eat properly. Why do we allow this again?

Why cannot people gamble for peanuts, or better still for nothing. Friends used to meet in houses and have a lot of fun gambling in various forms for nothing. Why should certain moraless owners of pubs be priveliged to exploit human weaknesses.

The poker machine manufacturers should be treated same as the drug dealers!
decalco137 5 months ago 24

@pathosbedlam don't ban gambling outright...remember what happened with alcohol prohibition..
