  • @littlefighterpit Yup, there's no place like home.

  • This runs through me. I must have been a machine in a past life.....

  • I'm still confusing love with need...

  • @metemi you need love.

  • Oh everything is moving

  • Can somebody please tell me why I LOVE this so much??

  • @HeathenWalden absolutely brilliant lyrics and a fitting low key electronic sound

  • and still confusing love with need

  • favourite gary numan song metal

  • Is it "Orgasmatron" cover?

  • looks like he's getting a boner from the pyramid of PLEASURE, lol *illuminati*

    but love the beat tho...

  • thump diddy thump diddy thump diddy thump thump

  • synth

  • classic numan track. way ahead of his time.

  • I dunno what you guys are talking about, but me likey Gary.

  • How amazing was He? I thought he was FAB! I was obsessed and went to loads of gigs, bought anything and everything that had a picture of him on!! Happy Days !! Still FAB after all these years !! Lovely memories !!

  • This was my favourite track from this album. I played it so much I scratched it! Nice to here a clear copy. This inspired one of my own tracks too. Pure synth sound - awesome.

  • simply fantastic

  • gary numaN = NIN = me hAPPY

  • sounds do much like of montreal... love both artists though.

  • numan did copy bowie, probably depeche mode copied bowie as well... but it doesn't make them any less awesome.

  • I got the 45 record when this came out it was the flip side to "Cars"

I played both sides equally as much.. awesome!! Thank-you Gary !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I can't decide which version I like better, this, or Nine Inch Nail's.

  • @daftmarzo his !

  • @mobyboy yes!

  • sooooo hotttttttttttttttttttttttt i love gary /tarantino on facebook

  • ssssssoooooo ggggggoooooooooddddddd

  • @TheArbiterBibendi for sure!

  • sssssssssoooooooo ggggggggggggoooooooooodddddddddddddd

  • This is my favorite Numan Song! Nothing beats it!

"I could crawl on the floor just like I'm real" who can write like that? name one person

  • @ACEDIMEMUSTAINE ...Robert Smith?

  • @Thecuregalore94 David Bowie, okay okay I get your point but Robert Smith was no Numan!

  • @ACEDIMEMUSTAINE A matter of opinion mate. Personally, I believe Robert Smith is a total genius, even higher than Numan.

  • @Thecuregalore94 I like dem both!

  • @ACEDIMEMUSTAINE Bowie too, all good stuff you have both mentioned.

  • @Supernaut007YT strange Bowie hated Numan

"I've seen some of his videos. To be honest, I never meant for cloning to be a part of the eighties. He's not only copied me, he's clever and he's got all my influences too. I guess it's the best of luck to him."

  • @paintedship Really? Bowie thinks Newman copied him? In my opinion Numan's stuff isn't even similar to Bowie's, but whatever. Maybe Bowie's just jelous.

  • @HighRiseChateau agreed, but Bowie didn't seem to think so, he really did not like Numan it seems

  • @HighRiseChateau think so too! numan is better n cooler!

  • @HighRiseChateau Gary Numan did seem to have a similar aesthetic, as Bowie was experimenting with electronics at the time, but Bowie's obsession was Eurocentric at its core. Gary Numan's fixation was on alienation and his sound reflected that alien feel, where was Bowie was not exploring that subject topically in his music.

  • @MiaoPurrington because numan was nu-wave and bowie was prog-rock. simple.

  • Comment removed

  • @konnichiwaneku I'll just assume that you're joking. Your simplification was for humorous effect right?

  • @konnichiwaneku while at least a couple of Bowie's records can be called "prog" (I think that label would fit Station To Station or Low very neatly) it's not really accurate for the sum of his ouvre.

  • @nicktaxidermy true, just fancied a quick, gross statement. I made a low-end reply to a low-end comment somewhere . . .

  • @paintedship which interview or web page source did you take those quotes from?

I've never heard of anything like that

  • @Taud go to google and paste in "Gary Numan - TW David Bowie Conversation Piece"

  • @Taud that quote came from-

interview by Paula Yates on Record Mirror 1979,

reproduced in Strange Fascination by David Buckley

  • @paintedship strange for someone that observed Marc Bolan and was obsessed by his art... he said that he was clearly influenced by Marc...

  • Whatever

  • Oh man. I had this on 8-track when I was 12. I loved loved LOVED this song.

  • A gary numan CD get's bought tomorrow.

  • THE WORLD NO-LONGER PRODUCES.... HIGH QUALITY...UNIQUE...AND AUTHENTIC...ROCK AND ROLL...THIS SONG IS SO CUTTING EDGE...IT SOUNDS..AS VIBRANT...AND IMPORTANT....AND DARK/COOL..TODAY AS IT DID WAY BACK..IN 1979!!!!!!!!!

  • @divisionmagus I Was Their ! ;)

  • So Tommy James and Bowie invented Glam, but Gary Numan and

The Human League and once was The Future invented New Wave.

  • @LORDGOAT1976 I thought Marc Bolan invented glam to be fair. He seems to be forgotten about always.

  • Calidad absoluta.

  • NIN remake has little to do with the idea of this song. It's sound is cheesy.

It is hardly worth mentioning in company with the original.

  • My Malory heart is sure to fail

but I'll still take a toke, for you.

  • Does anyone remember a 3 CD album, limited addition called " The Exibit"?

  • God,i can only imagine what having sex with Gary would be like..mmmmmmm....so dark and sexy....

  • @JoyDivisiongirl What, the robotic jerk in time with the music ? LOL get a wanking wand, it does what you want it to !

  • @tecdessus cheecky shit ! ;) This Is 'material' ! I lived it ! !

  • @tecdessus Sorry that was ment @ JoyDiv Girl ! C It's Gotta 'Div' In it 4 a reason ! LOL ;)

  • wow i wish i could get shit housed right now bumping this album i just discovered

  • Gary numan and Kraftwerk's " electric cafe" techno at it's best! Fuck everything new accept New Orders Sirens Call...now that's a GREAT album!

  • @littleboeep What about Human League's newer stuff? :D

  • FUCK nine inch nails. There version of this sucks!! It's about as good as The Cardigans cover of " Sabbath Bloody Sabbath!" The Cult's " Born to be wild" Now that,s a great cover!!! And don't anyone e mail me no bullshit about Trent...they suck!

  • @littleboeep FUCK YOU if its not as good its better...

  • @buuski The two can't realistically be compared since they were made 20 years apart. Numan and Reznor had completely different equipment available to them. Also the genres aren't quite the same. Numan's is more like New Wave while Reznor's is more industrial.

  • @buuski

  • This what happens when an engineer makes music . Cars, metal, Airlane etc haha jokes. Numan was at the forefront of Techno music, what a legend. Thanks to me dad for introducing Gary numan, he continues to inspire me in the music I create today!

  • Metal was written by gary. Johnny Cash? Only cover i know of him doing is "break this rusty chain" by soundgarden.

  • @littleboeep Cash covered Trent Reznor's "Hurt", and Reznor covered this song, "Metal", by Numan. That's probably causing some confusion for a few people. Cash never wrote any of Numan's songs--Numan never covered any Cash songs, either, unless it was in a live performance, but I just can't see it.

  • @littleboeep What? He did a lot of covers like Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode. Just look at American IV on wiki.

  • I think this is the best song on this album. To bad so many people only know "cars"....

  • @littleboeep I am of the same opinion. Metal is the best song on the album. People only know Cars.

  • Nine inch nails just started making weak songs after Kill 'em all

  • awesome !!!

  • Gary Numan's cover of Hurt is better then Trent Reznor's cover of Metal. Even though Metal was originally written by Johnny Cash.

  • @MatttCollins LMAO. Glad I read the whole thing. I was about to start a fuckin flame war.

  • Comment removed

  • @MatttCollins I would have to agree. But I could have sworn Johnny Cash covered Trent Reznor's version of Metal, who covered Gary Numan's version of Closer, which was originally written by Marilyn Manson.

  • That is Johnny Cash's song, NIN covered him!

  • @jesusitzkurt no, Hurt is not Johnny Cash's song! check it out. Originally by NIN. :)

  • @jesusitzkurt That is incorrect. Why did you post this comment when you haven't done ANY research to back up your claim? Use google, or wikipedia, or maybe even a website that sells CDs and look up the dates at which both versions of HURT came out. The only information you're going to find is that NIN wrote Hurt in 1994 and it appeared on the Downward Spiral Album that came out that same year. Johnny Cash's version did not come out until 2002. Do research before making a claim. -_-

  • @KUROGUY I thought I was on the NIN page, had two windows open at once, this one n NIN, so ya shut the hell up, honest mistake! ;D

  • @jesusitzkurt Ever since Johnny Cash covered "Hurt" Trent has not played the song live. He has said Johnny Cash has made that song his own, and did it true justice. Theoretically you are right when you say it's Cash's song, but NIN did infact write the song. Trent in a artistic manner gave the song to Cash. No one has said anything about posting the comment about "Hurt" on Numans video, they simply said you need to research songs before claiming that songs are actually the other persons.

  • @SmackMeSmart

NIN played "Hurt" as a last track on "Wave goodbye" tour.

  • @TheBrudas I stand corrected then. That's what happens when you trust a few things off of the interwebs, did deeper research on it now. =P

  • And I bought this in 1980 as a 9 year old. Put it on the music centre (record combo thing at the time) my mum told me to take it back as it sounded like it was stuck. Glad I didn't as I still listen to this album which I have to say is his best. Great driving tune!

  • I find it funny how on pretty much everything on YouTube there's an argument, I like both versions, I knew of the original before Trent's version, I like them about the same, and the reason Trent Reznor did a cover of this song is because he's a fan, I don't really see why people have to fight just because they have different opinions on things, it's really pointless... But anyways, great song!

  • Still my favorite Numan song. Beautiful simplicity. Somehow it ends up greater than the sum of its parts; Numan was ahead of his time.

  • WOW! I haven't heard this song in years! I used to love Gary Numan as a kid. I had all his albums!

  • @policemustang thats a lot of fucking albums

weren't half of them shit anyway?

  • guess Laroux likes this track

  • Very cruchy,revival & retro...and clashy :)

    Great Track 5 stars

  • @TheNouveauxdecadence Who gives a f*** about NIN? A cover version means lack of creativity. ORIGINAL IS BETTER. It seems old cos it is old, stupid f***.The great thing about Numan's music is that its virtually all his own work. No cover versions. How many modern singers can boast that? From 1978 to 1986, every album had a distinctive sound and that can be hard to achieve. Spread the Numan gospel, it's better than the bible - & us Numan fans are loyal and will defend his music with pride.

  • @Bosconian87 AMEN

  • @Bosconian87 hold on a minute..

just cuz nin did a cover doesnt mean they are not original

trent fires out music all the time and has stayed true to his word the whole time...he even tried to innopvate the music industry itself....

gary numan is just as much an innovator as trent....he just happened before hand

  • @jtfles No one complained when Johnny Cash covered Hurt.

  • @Bosconian87 you're a prick

  • @Bosconian87 I dont think NIN doing a cover means they are unoriginal, sure Numan is better and imo, his new stuff is even better then NIN, but the cover wasnt bad. alot of original artists do covers, fuck look at bowie he did 2 covers on his 02 album, but does that discredit everything he made from 69-03? of course not

  • I personally think Nine Inch Nails are better but in this song Numan has it. Numan's song metal has a better feel than Reznors. but i still like nin better. :D

  • I first heard this album in 1979 from my brother and it still is some badass sounding music that was way before its time back then

  • love this song, one of gary numan's finest creations, rock on!!

  • N.I.N can go fuck themselves...

Gary Numan's 1979 Electronic verging on New Romantic is what it's all about!

    Take that Industrial Goths!

  • @TheNouveauxdecadence I had just the opposite experience, coming from the NIN version, this one seems shallow and outdated, but its all opinion, no right no wrong. Sometimes going back to original songs can be a pleasant surprise, other times its just disappointing like with this song. meh.

  • @TheNouveauxdecadence

"thenselves"? NIN is just one person, dumbass

  • @buuski

    Who cares!

Basically, "Metal" was recorded in 1979 LOOOONG before N.I.N.

I am allowed to have an opinion!

I grew up with New Wave and Synth Pop so naturally I love the original version by Gary Numan. SO I really couldn't give a toss how many members are in N.I.N DUMBASS!

  • @TheNouveauxdecadence you're right bro...!

  • @TheNouveauxdecadence NIN can go fuck themselves! They suck. Reznor sucks! He chose this tune for a very good reason. Think about it dumb fucks.

  • @godofslumber STUPID FUCK ! YEP YOU ARE

  • @godofslumber

nin does not suck. Why the fuck are you guys arguing about this. Good song, good cover.

  • This Is One Of My Favorite Gary Numan Songs! I Grew-Up With This Guy (Figuratively -- Of Course -- LOL)! But -- Musically -- He's Been One Of The Biggest (Early) Influences In My Life! I Always Pictured Myself As A Vulcan Growing-Up (Not Human) -- Soooo -- Gary Numan's Style Seemed To Fit Pretty Close With Mine! HeHe! Anyway: I Love This Song And "Down In The Park"! But Honestly: I Love Lots Of His Songs! I Had Most Of His Albums When I Was Younger, Too!! Gosh: What A Fantastic Musician!!!! Rick

  • i like both but this one is better IMHO

  • @GuruBabadesh Me too!

  • yea the orignal of anything is hard to beat. glad you gave it a listen. i love this song.

  • Numan should do a remix of this track it`s far too short and has a really bland fade out at the end. The track needs to be extended by adding a long instrumental section so as the synths can get all spaced out and trippy.

  • @acidhouse100

have you guys heard nin cover of this? trent does the ending by blending in another track from the album. its amazing.

  • @TheNoumena I gave the N.I.N version a listen on your recommendation. It`s okay but personally i prefer Numan`s version because it features more synths and is more spaced out. But thanks for the recommendation i appreciate it. Cheers.

  • i asked my dad 2 buy this album in 1979 , he heard it n said i was mad

  • The one person who disliked this song is obviously organic.

  • omfg... trent did a cover of this song...wth... i think he was in love with MR. Numan

  • This was revolutionary for 1979. Gary Numan was far ahead of his time.

  • @bcoverss

    No and no.

  • Hey, we can all stare at glowing pyramids, mate.

  • I think this track is the most geniously composed New Wave electronica piece of music ever in the history of mankind.

    ITs so hypnotic.

Not to mention the limited instrument hardware at the time and of course the rest of the album

  • uhh ohhh......

  • Yay...bought the album when it first come out and this I guess is one of my fave tracks...even now I really enjoy listening to it :-)

  • Yum. Old-school industrial. Still like NIN version better, but this is just too awesome as well.

  • Whitejelly....Does it matter what ear it's in?

  • I like this version better than NIN's only because of the Polymoog synthesizer that Gary used.

  • @00665555 Yes, thats the truth, the old ways of garys music, i love it.

  • @PabloEmilio1000 Yes he had that one of-a-kind sound. I instantly became a fan when I listened to a concert that a local radio station played back in the early 80's.

  • I personally prefer this version over NINs cover, though NIN did a fantastic job, actually IMO their arrangement was better, but one thing I always liked about Numans music was his Emotional/Emotionless voice, which is something they aren't as good at. If it wasn't for Numans singing and execution I would prefer the NIN version, but I prefer Numans.

  • @Godscarmachine exactly.

  • Original and best version ever of this song, never, ever get tired of this.

  • @vermillionsnake so true, and 30 years later, and the LIQUID ENGINEERS are still haunting us!

  • NIN !!!!!!!!!

  • @kakaramara Gary numan.

  • @phillips1993 i know just i want to say NIN better i think :))

  • @kakaramara Yeah the remake is good but still that gary numan is good.

  • @kakaramara :D

  • Siempre he pensado lo mismo. Trent es el hijo no reconocido de Numan. ( Creo que descubrí la pólvora... ).

  • This definitely goes on all things likeable.

  • Genius. Knight him. Arise Sir Gary!!!!

  • This was the flip side to the Cars 45. I used to have it.

  • Oh dear sweet goodness it's just so elegant and beautiful... Numan is a master!

  • You know I NEVER heard the original of this song, (yeah I knew Numan wrote it), but outside of "Cars" haven't heard anything else. I love NIN's version of this song, and they did one hell of a job, but Numan's is very cool as well.

  • WOW you need to get your facts straight bud...just wow

  • Comment removed

  • @MrBloodbunny What?

  • Comment removed

  • @MrBloodbunny Other way around, Numan's is the original.

  • @azazoththing i really didn't know that... interesting. btw the Numan-NIN-Bauhaus axis is my absolutely favourite, so we are on the same side :)

  • @MrBloodbunny The constant skinny anorexic musician-ness of both Peter Murphy and Gary Numan is MY absolute favorite but I notice that Trent Reznor has a bit of a belly now! LOL LOL

  • @MrBloodbunny its Gary Numan by NIN, still awesome tho

  • Gary Newman rocks it man, just took people awhile to figure it out, guess some people are just slower that others

  • @gasrelay it NUMAN not Newman look at the title

  • @gasrelay I can't agree more!

  • I cant believe I missed him at Coachella. Fuck.

  • Metal is one of my favorite songs of Gary and it's also the most danceable. I love its beat!

  • MOOGS - MOOGS AND MORE MOOGS!!!!

  • This whole album was just fantastic. Sets the the whole tone of the early 80's.
