496 is a stroked 454, 0.060" overbore. Stock 454 dimensions are 4.250" bore, 4.00" stroke. 496 uses a custom 4.250 stroke crank. You can do the math yourself; bore x bore x stroke x .7854 x # cylinders = engine displacement.

Just wanted to say happy thanksgiving;) Also, tonight I went to turn on the car and it won't start. The batt. is fully charged and when u turn the key it sounds like its grinding but not cranking at all. Sounds like if you had an automatic and turned the key again after the car was running and u hear that grinding sound, thats what it sounds like and I'm not sure why its doing that all the sudden. no it was a 454 then bored .0060 over then a .25 longer stroke now the displacement is 496. do some looking on the net you will find alot of stroke kits to make a 496 out of a 454. Mine is eagle crank and rods.

You are partly right.The new LS7's was developped from the small block (hybrid sounds good)and is a 427 (7.0L)generation IV LS(used in corvettes recently) but it has nothing to do with the one in older Camaros , those were gen.I W series engines(big block W for Wide).As for the confusion around the LS7(big or small block?),it comes from the fact that the 454 (big block) in the '70s was also coded LS7 and was a modified LS5 with a HP intake. Just to add my grain of salt...

It was a 454 berfore the oilpump locked up in spring. I hade it bored out and put in a 4.25 stroked crank which makes it a 496. Also the 307 was put in the Chevelles in 70
