use Garnet/Dagger or Eiko.

Only after playing a while, you can use them. I think it was after Cleyra... but I don't remember for sure. You have to get your hands on some Stones or any other Object that haves Summons abilities in them. Like a Lapis Lazuli, or a Ruby, Peridot, Topaz, Garnet etc. If you equip these then you can summon them, and if you learn the ability, you can always summon them.

accutayl u can summon them at the beging of the game like once u get garnet and do some super lvling til u get 90 some mp for shiva then u can summon shiva its

I dont know anymore... a high level anyway.... My friend was stuck once, in the misty forest... he couldnt kill that cage plant thingy. he trained till level 15 and still couldnt kill it XD can you believe that?! anyway... I think level 15 is for garnet high enough for mp...or something. but i dont remember it exactly anymore...

Odin was always a cool summon, but I hate that they always make him a "kill-instantly" type, so you couldn't even use him during bosses. At least in FF9 he could do some damage.

every FF has his 'side effects' of bad things. But leveling up here isn't so bad. In the higher levels it gets harder because you need more, but there are monster for to get lots of EXP. so I think that guy who told you this, isn't so far... and stuck.. because it's a great game! great story and overall look. and FMV are all cool! and the battle system is cool too. In every other 3D FF you play with 3 members, this is with 4!

So... you should buy it :). Every other FF has a slow beginning (even this one), but after a few hours of playing (can be between 5 or 10 hours) you are in the middle of the story, and know what it's all about.. so you want to play on and on! There are tons of side quests who are easy to play and easy to earn things in who can help you extremely much! so don't get annoyed by this guy. he is probably stuck ;) or else leveling up isn't so bad :D
