  • search bolder gazet van antwerpen

  • It is always nina playing the piano. geez.

  • w...o....w. I don't want to sound cliche but nothing like this exists in the new music. The depth, the music, the lyrics. I am a true fan of this genre that makes you think and reflect.

  • her pianism is a clear as and as good as (to me better but there you go) L Bernstein's - listen to Everyone's gone to the moon it is sensational

  • damn, i love nina but i can't listen to this song without the image of bette midler from the clip in beaches..... kinda wrecks it for me.

  • whoa...lovely piano

  • her voice sounds weird. i like randy newman's version better

  • Hey Kevierae, Isn't it funny how the first version of a song is usually our favorite. Plus the setting/situation. I first heard this song by Bette Midler in "Beaches" (my fave), now I see so many other versions. Cant wait to hear David Grey, of course High Priestess Nina does an able job too...

  • What a experience

  • My favorite is the Judy Collins version because I heard it first in a very special setting. However, I've always loved this Nina Simone cut because of her piano playing. She was one of a kind. Wish PBS would find her broadcast from back in the late 1960's.

  • In this song her piano performs the equivalent of an abbreviated classical work with all its movements being expressed - to me, her voice adds the strings.

  • No one can top the original. RANDY NEWMAN

  • @schbrachbolidsei two words: Peter Gabriel

  • (L)________(L)

  • I heard this song on Japanese TV program today, and I reached here.

It made me cry, but also I felt hope on what I'm doing for suffering friends. Thank you!

  • 報道ステーションで流れてました。

    素晴らしい曲ですね。

  • how beautiful…her voice moves me.

I knew this song in "Eigahen" written by Kazuki Kaneshiro.

  • She is best singer ever. Kindness is free to give. It doesn't cost money.

  • BEAUTIFUL :)

  • I miss you. . .

  • last verse is especially powerful

  • Hurricane Earl

  • Rain ain't always a bad thing... yup yup to all!!

  • I loved her so much! Yes she is on the piano in this number. I'm friends with her daughter.

  • brilliant!

  • I wish I had heard of Nina Simone long ago. I missed something. I have been exploring a lot of African videos lately for a research projecton cultural radiation, and it struck me on hearing some of her works here that she owes a lot to the traditions of the Mandinka jali ("griots" to most of the world.) She sang because she had something to say.

  • the best version is by sidsel endresen with bugge wesseltoft on the piano, but unfortunatelly it's nowhere to be found on youtube. check their version of chains of fool to see what i mean

  • How any one can say this or that one is better amazes me. Every version mentioned is great. Any interpretation Nina does of anything is great as well. Musicians take a lesson on her version. She is an all time legend for a reason.

  • As much as i love Nina, Dusty Springfield's version is still superior.

  • This is great, full with emotions! Also I like Norah Jones version it's very smooth in her kind a way!

  • i'm so inlove with this song

  • This is very nice, but doesn't hold a candle to the Bette Midler version. No offense, this one is nice as well. Just seems to lack the passion of Bettes.

  • I can only agree with you, I don't want to offend Nina Simone, though. Of course each version does have it's on charm!

But personally, I just love Bette Midler - she's so great an actress and she sings with so much passion... this version is nice, to be sure, but it seems more artificial to me. Well, that's just my personal taste.

  • This song is so honest it has become timeless. Human Kindness is overflowing. And I think it's going to rain today.

  • I love hearing other artists' versions of songs, it can sometimes open your ears in a different way. I heard "Natural Woman" by Aretha Franklin first and was amazed, then someone gently pushed the original version by singer songwriter Carole King on me. After some resistance, I listened. What a very different song and way way way my favourite version. I believe there is no "ideal" version of anything, just very different takes, all intriguing and beautiful, personal preference.

  • her voice is so full of charisma and character, she puts soul and emotion in every word she's singing. it's amazing to be able to listen to it

  • Someone just left a comment on my upload of this song by Irma Thomas and Randy Newman and said this version was their favorite. Not sure if it's mine's but....excellent job by Miss Simone. This is my first time hearing it. Thanks for posting.

  • how about Bette Midler in the soundtrack from Beaches. She gives new birth to the song.

  • try Randy Newman - far better phrasing, and piano playing too

  • Nah, wouldn't call it better, though his version's equally gorgeous.

  • Thank you so much for putting this on Youtube. My mother introduced me to her and I've never heard this...Unbelievable restraint and power, beautiful piano. No one compares with her...

  • Although I really enjoy Nina, I don't really like the arrangement of this version. Not her fault, Bette and Claudine do it much better, much prefer a subtle sultry Nina arragement. No offense.

  • Non Taken lol

  • Don't forget about UB40 version

    watch?v=1wZdSYPi9qI

    very specific one

  • What can I say? This woman was a maestro and the best at what she did, infact the only person who does what she did. This is the main difference between her and other maestro of music such as Aretha and others. Dr Nina was the most unique artist with her GENRE.

  • Yes I agree with you, she lived what she sang.

  • @mrduragss she was a genre on to herself.

  • best version. piano very powerful in this. is it her playing?

  • Yep

  • @1andoneis3 : Yes, it is. On top of an amazing voice and nearly unparalled phrasing, she was an exceptional piano player. One day, she'll receive her just due and be included with Armstrong, Holliday, Ella, Sinatra and Cash as the best vocalists of the past century.

  • @1andoneis3 yes.

  • @1andoneis3 she was a pianist who decided she also wanted to sing

  • She studied classical music. She was was turned down by some teacher because she was a black, woman. That didn't deter her though. Initially she wasn't very enthused about recording & very indifferent about getting a recording contract . She only saw it as a means to generate more money to continue/advance her piano studies. Early on she even (unfortunately) sold the rights to her music for $3,000. That move cost her million$ in royalties. BTW she was also bi-polar & schizophrenic

  • Classical piano study is EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE... 1000s of very talented pianists are "turned down" by teachers every year.... talented pianists of all races. I'd suspect she simply was not as obviously polished as "Juilliard teachers" are apt to prefer. They doubtless KNEW she was an artist... just not a classical pianist. IMHO

  • @1andoneis3 Yeah, she has awsome songs for solo piano too

  • @1andoneis3 Always Listen How she takes a "fuge" in her version or love me or leave me and does something no one on earth was ready for

  • @1andoneis3 Yes it was her playing the piano. She always wanted to be a concert pianist but wasn't allowed in because of her colour. I guess that was a blessing in disguise to us all though, what a gift to the world she was and still is!

  • Great song! Nice picture!
