I love old angry maynard when he didn't have any money. Try looking for interviews like this these days. You'll probably end up watching him in a santa costume making grapes.
I think Maynard is Aleister Crowley's incarnate. Brilliant mind. A Futant. Tools music has helped keep me on the path. Helped me from turning into one of them.... the mindless and moronic!
I find it strange that bands like Tool and Russian Circles are linked. In the way that if someone likes Tool, they are much more likely to listen to Russian Circles or Sigur Ros, rather than someone who listens to The Beatles.
I hate this pseudo-culture of idiots who speculate about what music is because they're so stubborn they can't see it's different to everyone. it's called 'relativity' and if you wanna go up against einstein then be my guest you MORON
It's as MJK says in the video, words are great, but it's the music that provides the emotion in a song. Lyrics just define the emotion being presented by the music.
@sallyschildcare you mentioned tool vs. russian circles. for me, lyrics and music are equally important (and they depend on each other for effect). with russian circles, you're given some vague song titles that have meaning mainly for the band members only, and yet i feel so much when listening to them. the feelings are the effects of the music and the sounds. with tool it's the same way, i can either listen with an emphasis on sound or i can look up lyrics--but the power is in combining them.
It says a lot about Tool that Maynard is so dismissive of the importance of lyrics in a song. Tool lyrics are typically (though not always) esoteric, vague, and lacking the coherence to make their meaning clear. Maynard is a superb singer, and Tool make excellent music, but lyric writing is the band's one major flaw...it's a real shame that, judging from this interview, Maynard has never applied much effort to improving in that area.
@garethac81 I have just two things to say to you - 'Right In Two' and 'Parabola.' If you want lyrics that will blow your fucking mind that you can understand, listen to both of these songs. Maynard doesn't say lyrics aren't important, all he says is that the music and the feel the overall sound creates matters more.
@garethac81 the point is to have a deep meaning that someone cant find unless they really want to. thats why they dont put their lyrics in their albums, you could figure out the lyrics by just listening deeply enough instead of just lazily going to the album which loses the meaning.
Why is Maynard wearing high heels? And what looks like a stuffed Bra? (in the second sequence)...Anyway he's a musical genius along with Carey, jones, and Chancellor/D'amour. Just wierd haha.
I love tool but i have to disagree with maynard about the lyrics. I think that if it wasn't for the lyrics the music wouldn't be as important. if he really feels that way then why is he even in the band anyway. why would he write lyrics if he doesn't think they're that important. music and lyrics completment one another. you can't have one without the other.
Question. I always thought MJK was opposed to live recordings, yet here they have multiple. Is it that he used to not mind and it wasn't until the Lateralus tour that it began to bug him?
i'm so glad MJK said that about being a 'reactive artist rather than a creative artist' because i always thought of that as a flaw when i was like that and now it gives hope.
@internash give credit where credit where credit is due coheed is good, their no tool, not quite a five dollar painting they are at least worth 25 dollars
I was referring to the Einstein quote. Not whatever the hell you're talking about. I was correcting the other dude becasuse the correct quotation is "Imagination is more important that knowledge".
@sailbeyondthesunset he just said he was more of a "reactive" artist than a "creative" and thus imaginative one. It's his analytical mind, intelligence, and a bit of his imagination that make him such a great songwriter imo.. Einstein is overrated..
God I love arguments about music. The bottom line is just enjoy it.The Beatles aren't Beethoven,Link Wray isn't Genesis, and Pantera isn't Phillip Glass. There's something for every one.
@loumag7 something about pop acts that seem to miss everything thats important about music in general... they miss the origin that makes music human... they make albums to sell albums with nothing important or meaningful invested... get rich or die trying type deal... undermines what millions of starving musicians are trying to do
I love how Maynard says that he is only 25% of that band, and that the others are more important, yet who is always in front of the camera for these interviews. Maybe the other guys just hate this kind of crap.
Also, I think people like the words because they can sing along with them - but almost no-one can play along :)
In terms of subjectivity - there is a ton of crap music out there - don't tell me that art can't be judged, some music just sucks ass
it doesnt matter which way you go about it a lot of bands get the music first , they have an idea of what the songs going to be about then express the emotions through the music that way you can easily create lyrycs to the phrasing of the music . The music creates the structure for the song its like building a building first you need concrete and you need to know how much concrete and how big its gonna be, then you can build the rest. Also a lot of bands write the lyrycs fist it doesnt matter
personally, I do not care about lyrics. Well written music should be open to interpretation. For me its about the structure, arrangements and harmonics.
shut the fuck up. idiot. there's no right way do anything subjective, especially when creating it. u don't tell a musician, o u have to write lyrics first, or vice versa, otherwise it'll be crap. that's just plain stupid.
I am going by tradition and what has 'worked' in the past. This doesn't mean alternative methods aren't effective, they're just not as good (If you researched it you would understand what i mean)
I'd bet that 80-90% of the greatest songs ever written had the lyrics first and then they put the music too it.
The music is already there, the lyrics come from the mind, the imagination, that's why its so effective :-)
the sound (you could argue) = no. If i play an F#m7 chord it will sound like an F#M7! The stairway to heaven solo is great but its just the notes from a pentatonic minor scale. Its how it is put together that is in important. The music is already there on the instrument, The lyrics have to come from the imagination (that's all i was saying)
Eddie Van Halen once said...
Some people think a song without words isn't a real song. Tell that to Beethoven and he'll kick your ass!
could you not say that for the lyrics, the words are already there, but it's how they're put together that matters? Using either words or notes to express yourself, you're going through the same process, just one requires arranging words and one requires arranging notes. Your quotation seems to enforce what Im saying a little more.
run your million words through a computer voice and it doesn't have nearly as many nuances as sounds. For all octaves there are limitless voices and distortions. The voice will always change the context of the words so the sound is the vehicle the words cannot come through without.
words can appeal to the mind certainly and I'll give you that. The music which is 'behind' it appeals to something bigger before even words. It appeals to a viseral unconcious something more like dreams which we can agree is imaginitive. Music is the lingua franca that communicates universally. Like you are saying now words can be bullshit and therefore shallow and surface yet muddy and deceptive. Ever liked a song that wasn't in English or is that too untraditional?
I agree the dude sounds sort of douchebaggy, but I get the impression that you classify the difference between intellectuals and pseudo-intellectuals as follows:
Pseudo-intellectual: someone who sounds intelligent but your instinct is to oppose them.
Intellectual: Someone who sounds intelligent, but your instinct is to resonate with them.
Your definition is subjective. But you present it as a definitive truth.
What? I totaly disagree with you. He sounds honest and earnest in his answers. He's just not that humouristic kind of person who would take every question as if it were of no importance.
@paulcage79 there does not have to be 12 notes in an octave. it all depends on what culture or type of music you're playing. you can break it down to basically any set of semitones you'd like and it will still be an octave if the vibratos are multiplied or divided by 2 from the origin.
ace edihedihedih, simply ace. He's using reductivist logic to isolate instruments in an alien category when they share a lot in common with music. Before people could speak they must have made some kind of emotional sound to communicate. The word doesn't have as far and deep reaching roots as sound.
"all the great bands". well first of all, do you need me to explain how silly and subjective that is?
how can you possibly think that "all the great bands" just write lyrics first then put music around it? i mean, do i need to explain why that notion is so retarded?
I think you like using the word 'subjective' a lot. It makes you sound clever i suppose.
Yes please explain it to me! I want to understand your logic, because so far you haven't explained why my notions are retarded you have just told me they are (another empty statement from you)
when i say 'great bands' I mean the biggest selling artists of all time, Beatles, Elvis, Queen, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, books/documentaries reveal their writing methods....it works!
you're implying that good music is always created with lyrics first. if you say that this statement is correct, well, i'm sorry, but you don't deserve to have an opinion.
no doubt in a few minute's there will be a witty response from you and this argument will go on for ever. whatever.
the argument will carry on until you answer my simply question ...WHY is my statement incorrect?
you still can't answer me, You've just done it again, You've told me I don't deserve to have an opinion...WHY!?
I respect all views and opinions, I would love to hear your opinion on this (I might even learn something and it might even make me change my own view) but I won't get to hear it because you REFUSE to answer me!
you simply can't prove that all good music with lyrics was written with lyrics first. take the majority of hendrix's songs. they were written mostly by music first. stairway to heaven was written at the same time with lyrics and music.
it's not as if music just becomes good if lyrics are written first. you can't argue that every zeppelin, beatles and who song was written with lyrics first. obviously a large majority, if not most of their songs came with chords or riffs first.
You are honestly saying that the biggest selling artists are therefore the best. Do you not know that most people are fucking retarded? Its called art, AC\DC are not artists, Elvis is not an artist.
you cant compare elvis to anyone man. he was around in the 50's. thats just TOO old. no comparisons for elvis please, he was doing innovative things for his time.
Ima fan of Bill Hicks and A HUGE fan of Tool, Musiq and lyrics wise they are Amazing! How can you not like danny carey? or how beautiful schism sounds, third eye, the musiq is what makes the lyrics come alive ! Your Crazy Dude! lol your not a tool Fan, you just think there ok lol

@loumag7 something about pop acts that seem to miss everything thats important about music in general... they miss the origin that makes music human... they make albums to sell albums with nothing important or meaningful invested... get rich or die trying type deal... undermines what millions of starving musicians are trying to do
clint1663 1 year ago
@loumag7 Although, a lot of the same people who listen to Beethoven also listens to The Beatles.

I love how Maynard says that he is only 25% of that band, and that the others are more important, yet who is always in front of the camera for these interviews. Maybe the other guys just hate this kind of crap.
Also, I think people like the words because they can sing along with them - but almost no-one can play along :)
In terms of subjectivity - there is a ton of crap music out there - don't tell me that art can't be judged, some music just sucks ass
lzemlick 2 years ago
IMO sucky music shouldn't be called music because it is not addressing the etymology of the word MUSic which is to be compelled by a muse.
LittleEmoBoy001 2 years ago
it doesnt matter which way you go about it a lot of bands get the music first , they have an idea of what the songs going to be about then express the emotions through the music that way you can easily create lyrycs to the phrasing of the music . The music creates the structure for the song its like building a building first you need concrete and you need to know how much concrete and how big its gonna be, then you can build the rest. Also a lot of bands write the lyrycs fist it doesnt matter
THEKK17 2 years ago
personally, I do not care about lyrics. Well written music should be open to interpretation. For me its about the structure, arrangements and harmonics.
Roddykay 2 years ago
you write the lyrics first and then the music around it. Like all the great bands did,
A lot of bands these days write good music and then put shit lyrics to it
paulcage79 2 years ago
you can to both at the same time...OR just don't think about it and let it flow without a rule or whatever!
Peace!

what an incredibly wrong and retarded statement.

what an incredibly empty retarded statement
when you make a claim you give reason to it, you back your statements up so we understand what you mean by it.
you don't just make a bold statement and not back yourself up
I'll help you out...
''WHY'' is what i said wrong and retarded (try again)
paulcage79 2 years ago
shut the fuck up. idiot. there's no right way do anything subjective, especially when creating it. u don't tell a musician, o u have to write lyrics first, or vice versa, otherwise it'll be crap. that's just plain stupid.
rldjsegura 2 years ago
I'm not telling anybody to do anything
I am going by tradition and what has 'worked' in the past. This doesn't mean alternative methods aren't effective, they're just not as good (If you researched it you would understand what i mean)
I'd bet that 80-90% of the greatest songs ever written had the lyrics first and then they put the music too it.
The music is already there, the lyrics come from the mind, the imagination, that's why its so effective :-)
paulcage79 2 years ago
are you saying the music doesn't come from the mind and imagination?
edihedihedih 2 years ago
the sound (you could argue) = no.
Tell that to Beethoven and he'll kick your ass!
paulcage79 2 years ago
could you not say that for the lyrics, the words are already there, but it's how they're put together that matters? Using either words or notes to express yourself, you're going through the same process, just one requires arranging words and one requires arranging notes. Your quotation seems to enforce what Im saying a little more.
edihedihedih 2 years ago
this is getting a bit silly now. I think lyrics are more important, you think music is, How about we agree to disagree?
If not....lets carry on
How about this ...
there are 12 notes in an octave, and Thousands of chords you can construct. But there are nearly 1 million words in the English language
(Your turn, unless you want to propose a cease fire)

How about TooL vs Russian circles.....................that would be a good debate for you guys.. there both lodged straight in my heart
sallyschildcare 2 years ago
run your million words through a computer voice and it doesn't have nearly as many nuances as sounds. For all octaves there are limitless voices and distortions. The voice will always change the context of the words so the sound is the vehicle the words cannot come through without.
harryman666 2 years ago
You're a good bullshitter I'll give you that!
paulcage79 2 years ago
words can appeal to the mind certainly and I'll give you that. Ever liked a song that wasn't in English or is that too untraditional?
harryman666 2 years ago
Amen. Pseudo-intellectuals are funny.
amotionlesson 2 years ago
I agree the dude sounds sort of douchebaggy, but I get the impression that you classify the difference between intellectuals and pseudo-intellectuals as follows:
Pseudo-intellectual: someone who sounds intelligent but your instinct is to oppose them.
Intellectual: Someone who sounds intelligent, but your instinct is to resonate with them.
Your definition is subjective. But you present it as a definitive truth.
That's the beauty of being free I guess.
2bornot2b1984 2 years ago 2
"Get the impression" sounds like you are going with your instincts as facts. May I call that irony?
But it was poor word choice on my part. I don't know why I used it. Pretentious is much more fitting.
Pseudo-intellectual is essentially a bullshiter. Acts like he knows what he's talking about, but it's clear he doesnt.
amotionlesson 2 years ago
What? I totaly disagree with you. He sounds honest and earnest in his answers. He's just not that humouristic kind of person who would take every question as if it were of no importance.
lateteacher 2 years ago 3
@paulcage79 there does not have to be 12 notes in an octave. it all depends on what culture or type of music you're playing. you can break it down to basically any set of semitones you'd like and it will still be an octave if the vibratos are multiplied or divided by 2 from the origin.
holyshititstom 1 year ago
@paulcage79 That just means there's a whole lot more bullshit you can spew out into people's ears. I'm not disagreeing though.

@paulcage79 It's not about numbers.
It's about how much you can express with the amount of items you posses to bring the message.
Furthermore, it's exactly how Maynard describes it.

ace edihedihedih, simply ace. He's using reductivist logic to isolate instruments in an alien category when they share a lot in common with music. Before people could speak they must have made some kind of emotional sound to communicate. The word doesn't have as far and deep reaching roots as sound.
harryman666 2 years ago
agreed, maynard is stressing that a band can't work together with a narcistic authoritative tyrant in the band.
harryman666 2 years ago
Your are right; the word Axl Rose comes to mind. lol....
sailbeyondthesunset 2 years ago 2
"all the great bands". well first of all, do you need me to explain how silly and subjective that is?
how can you possibly think that "all the great bands" just write lyrics first then put music around it? i mean, do i need to explain why that notion is so retarded?
OwnedRL 2 years ago 2
I think you like using the word 'subjective' a lot. It makes you sound clever i suppose.
Yes please explain it to me! I want to understand your logic, because so far you haven't explained why my notions are retarded you have just told me they are (another empty statement from you)
when i say 'great bands' I mean the biggest selling artists of all time, Beatles, Elvis, Queen, Led Zeppelin, ACDC, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, books/documentaries reveal their writing methods....it works!
paulcage79 2 years ago
you're implying that good music is always created with lyrics first. if you say that this statement is correct, well, i'm sorry, but you don't deserve to have an opinion.
no doubt in a few minute's there will be a witty response from you and this argument will go on for ever. whatever.
OwnedRL 2 years ago
the argument will carry on until you answer my simply question ...WHY is my statement incorrect?
you still can't answer me, You've just done it again, You've told me I don't deserve to have an opinion...WHY!?
I respect all views and opinions, I would love to hear your opinion on this (I might even learn something and it might even make me change my own view) but I won't get to hear it because you REFUSE to answer me!
paulcage79 2 years ago
you simply can't prove that all good music with lyrics was written with lyrics first. take the majority of hendrix's songs. they were written mostly by music first. stairway to heaven was written at the same time with lyrics and music.
it's not as if music just becomes good if lyrics are written first. you can't argue that every zeppelin, beatles and who song was written with lyrics first. obviously a large majority, if not most of their songs came with chords or riffs first.
OwnedRL 2 years ago
You are honestly saying that the biggest selling artists are therefore the best. Do you not know that most people are fucking retarded? Its called art, AC\DC are not artists, Elvis is not an artist.
