Depends on the Definition. A normal instrument requires Skill and some Practice to get the Sound you want, and far more Practice to play it on a professional level.
For those modern electronic instruments, there isn't even partially as much practice necessary, which enables anyone to create generic, replacable songs that have no message and no art.
Classical music which is one of the genres of music where practice is the most necessary is otherwise a relatively stale form of art. The same songs that were played 200 years (or more) ago are played even today. I would also question your assumption that electronic music creates replaceable songs... just listen to the works of Mozart or Chopin and you can notice an incredible amount of redundancy in what they have written. The same is true for many modern atonal works.
You sound like you have never touched a synthesizer in your life or tried to create electronic music. I have both tried to do that and played classical piano as well, and from my experience I can tell you that creating music, no matter that the genre, is difficult. I still play the piano, but I gave up on making electronic dance music because I just didn't have the creative capacity for that. So I suggest you try playing first, and then form your opinions.
Sorry, mate, but I think you would have more surprises in store by listening to electronic music. :) I listen to jazz and I'm a heavy metal drummer. :) Besides, there's lots of jazz (and heavy metal) that does use synthesizers... so maybe you should check out Bugge Wesseltoft, for example.
And to address your question of "simple beats" vs "actually writing songs": I wouldn't make such a distinction. First of all lots of electronic beats aren't simple at all, and lots of beats played with instruments are simple. Furthermore, while it's difficult to play (drums) in time, it's also difficult to program an interesting sounding beat.
I dare you to try to make sounds like this. I can tell you, as an musician that plays mostly "real" instruments that getting this kind of sound out of your equipment is pretty damn hard. The ammount of tweaking, exploiting different kind of synths, filters and sound manipulators used here is way more than just pressing a button.

But the ones who play them them in a professional way let youre favourite bands look like botchers. Take a look at aphex twin or komonazmuk.
EinsZwo0 2 years ago 4
I don't think the quality or worthiness of music can be defined by how much the musicians have had to practice in order to make it.
Music is not a binary thing: most classical pianists, for example, wouldn't be able to make electronic dance music or folk music and vice versa.
Wormsie 2 years ago 3

Well then, what about the difference between creating simple beats and actually writing songs?
Btw, there are also modern styles of music which don't make use of synthesizers, so why don't we take those for comparing?
For example Heavy Metal or Jazz, where Jazz is often Improvised and Metal is based on actual songwriting.
Maybe you should look up a Band called Korpiklaani, you'll be surprised.
horstherbert35 2 years ago

And secondly: Complexity doesn't make music better. But this might also be a matter of taste and where we fundamentally differ in our opinions.
Wormsie 2 years ago 5
Umm.. I would not say THAT. You let out the part concerning music theory
