I had to buy Sam Shaws book just to get these awesome candid photos. I wish i were alive back then and just to get a glimpse of her in person would die a happy guy. Wonderful music as usual.thank you so much.
I feel sorry for the black woman 2:22, she looks so sad, black people didn't have many opportunities back in the 50's. The ideal image of beauty was what marilyn embodied (blonde European look). To be black was considered ugly. We praise Marilyn but neglect the uniqueness of others.
@zybotsu001 Marilyn didn't seem like a barrel of laughs either in a lot of these photos. Lena Horne, Eartha Kitt and especially Dorothy Dandridge were very much in demand the year of these photos. I think anyone is going to look pretty plain photographed next to Marilyn. That includes Jane Russell and Lauren Bacall.
@zybotsu001 Yeah, that's true. Marilyn was very good friends with Dorothy Dandridge and always praised her beauty, even over her own. Marilyn refused to go anywhere or patronise any spot that didn't except Dandridge. It's sad, things have slowly improved, but hollywood today is still quite racist.
@ThePharaoho Marilyn also straightened things out when a Hollywood nightclub would not let Ella Fitzgerald sing there - because she was black. Marilyn phoned up the owners and promised to sit in front every night (if they let Ella perform there), which she did...and the show went on!
@zybotsu001 The woman probably was thinking if I just looked like her everything would be good...but we don't know for sure. Yes things were much harder for people of color in those times...Marilyn would've helped the woman if they spoke with each other.
