I remember a music book I somehow wound up with as a young guitarist, and Chet's transcriptions almost look like a foreign language to me. I have enjoyed listening to both of these guitarists through the years. Each for what they bring to the table for all of us to enjoy. My wife once asked Vince during a rare opportunity we got to meet him, "my husband wants to know why his strat does not sound as good as yours." He just smiled at me, and said he had no social life.

@poppy3211000 No one? Really? I love Chet, but I don't know if I agree with that. Have you checked out Tommy Emmanuel? If not, do so. And also check out what Chet himself says about him, and how they compare. Also, Check out Albert Lee, who is even better than Tommy, in my opinion.
Just stumbled on this posting of yours! Fantastic! Thank you. Two amazing musicians and humble too boot. Great, great, great! Peace, love, music and justice. ~ Mark
Wow ! wow. wow. What an incredible post. Cannot thank you enough for this. I only wish Vince had done a tiny bit more singing here, but their playing... wow.
"I ain't gonna pick in front of ya" ...ha ha... It's nice to see famous people cower in front of a legend. A little bit anyway. Country and music in general doesn't have this class of talent anymore.
Wow....Grateful Dead tune...never heard any other version 'til now...didn't know Chet did it..('course, he's got like several dozen albums, so...)....tremendous talent...Vince is really great, too...
@snoodsly That tune's been around since looong before GD. It's an old country/folk tune. You'd be surprised at how many songs have been around long before somebody else made them famous.
do you remember the time frame for this? judging from Vince's hair (!) I'd guess early 90's .... ? Just watched the Chet Atkins double DVD/CD presentation on PBS fundraiser, and never really knew the depth of his influence on so many - am a DIEHARD Vince fan, guitar voice and personality don't come along that often in one package! THANK YOU for posting!
damn...that's a quick 20k in guitars up there

And then at 2:46 Chet says, "You don't know how to pick, do you?" Yikes.
But this is just a perfect example of two VERY DIFFERENT pickers, both dern good.
But one uses thumb and fingers and t'other uses a flatpick. Enjoy the contrast.

@brew1138
I think he says "you don't have a (thumb)pick, do you?" "You don't know how to pick, do you?" doesn't seem like something Chet would have said.

Altough Vince Gill is a great picker, no one can come close to Mr. Chet Atkins.
