@AnimosityGMC lol i wondered that too, although in his autobiography he talks about it, so the guy who called in obviously knows about clapton, likes fishing and his proud of his home town
@Greeneyefull..Yeah that seemed to me to be quite out of place, I mean it was almost as if Larry tried to pull a Barbara Walters session...that was just wrong.
I just read on the Layla video that he went into a racist anti-black rant back in 1976. Man, Eric, say it isn't so my man. I checked into it and it is true as the day. What do I do with all my Eric Clapton vinyls now? I don't want to support a racist but the things he said were pretty bad - actually awful. He said blacks had no place in white Britain. What would Bob Marley think? Man my head is in a spin and my gut is just punched man. Eric man, not you! Racism sucks. I'm crushed.
Larry King said one time that he didnt do research on his subjects to keep it fresh and not ask the same questions that all other interviewers ask. While I respect his approach, I totally disagree with it. As an interviewer, you should do as much research as possible on your subjects. Then dont ask the same questions that all the others ask. Further on in this interview, Larry asks Eric, so who did you write Layla about, and how did that happen. Eric looked at him like he was bloody mad.
I've seen a bunch of stuff with Larry King, not just the Clapton interview, and I get the idea that he doesn't do much research before he has someone on. If I had the chance to interview Slowhand, I would ask him some questions about some more of his "obscure" bands that he played with. Particularly Delaney & Bonnie.
YoHuckleberry. You are so spot on. When interviewing McCartney, King sounded like Paul had just started playing music instead of being in the history books as the most successful wealthiest musician on the face of the planet. That's where King's age goes against him. He's from the Sinatra era and thinks music ended there. What an interesting time, Delaney & Bonnie-both Clapton & Harrison grabbing some guitars and jumping on the bus and trying to be in the background. Great music.
@YoHuckleberry I agree. LK is going through the motions and EC deserves better. Charlie Rose would have been a better job. JEEZ! We could have done a better a job than EC.
When the caller first mentioned recreational activities, I think Eric was afraid the guy was going to ask him about drugs. He seems visibly relieved when it turned out to be a fishing question. He looks cute with those glasses, but I like him better with the rimless ones.
Yes, I suppose New Yorkers in general are friendlier than they are said to be. But they do have a tendency to shout things like: "Stay away from me!" "Back off, man!" "Leave me alone! What the hell are you doing?!"
Who the hell calls in to talk to Eric Clapton and asks about fishing....

@defleppardgirl2009 And referring to him as 'the child' instead of 'your child' makes it even worse.

Good observation.. Looks like he was relieved and almost amused by the term recreational.. Don't often hear that word outside of the drug world
