I can see the conversation went something like this: I need a guitar, 2 guys and lyrics about keeping an I but a CAPITAL I clean as their career choice. Too good!
Maybe I'm getting pretentious in my old age but there's something so sublimely beautiful about this song, nostalgia aside. I'm surprised this song didn't turn me into a little Wicker Man pagan as a kid!
I always expected the Grateful Dead at one of their live concerts to sing this song out of or in to a drumz/space segment ,but sadly I don't think they ever did...
It's like an Emerson, Lake and Palmer song with better lyrical continuity.....they didn't even have to jam the word "ladder" into it for lack of any other word to rhyme with "sadder" !!!!

Has anyone given any consideration to the subtle masturbatory undertones of the lyrics? Maybe I'm overthinking this, but "polishing the I" could easily be a euphemism, especially "all day long" and "day's only chore" and "so happy on a busy afternoon." Think this was deliberately clever or just the way the lyrics worked out?
The mind readily interpretes things along the direction of our pre-dominant thoughts. I'm sure the song has nothing to do with masturbation, neither did its writer intend to send out that message. Did you take note of words like "polish" to keep it shine, and the fact that three characters are involved in the activity? What of the ending note: "we go in and close the door"? How can anyone honestly relate the words of such a nice nursery song intended for children's learning to masturbation?
I see I'm not the only "weirdo" who has this song playing in my head from time to time. I guess I could put it to use and learn the chords and play it for my 5 year old son. LOL I still think its a cool song.
It's so true, we ALL live in a Capital I. This song is metaphorical. If you listen to the lyrics and read between the lines. Like at the end when they go into the I, and they close the door. It's like the walls we build around ourselves.
FINALLY - this has tormented me since about 1978! The 'as we work we sing a lively tune' line comes out evrytime I'm gardening or busy. This little clip must be responsible in some primal way for my love of music - it is so tuneful, tense and harmonic - amazing!!!!
Who are these guys? Do they eat? Are they able to go down to the earth? What exactly is this 'I'? When the guy with the ladder comes out to clean what is it resting on? If these beings are so advanced as to have built a kind of anti-gravity device and developed an advanced hydroponic subsistence farming why didn't they develop a self-cleaning 'I'? That way they wouldn't have to clean it. Why spend all day cleaning something that probably doesn't get all that dirty in the first place?
I hate it when my dad sings this song XD I hope someday to find it on a CD or cassette of Sesame Street lol

As we work we sing lively tune
"It is great to be so happy on a busy afternoon."
And when we're through with the day's only chore
we go into the I and we close the door.
