To place this song in context...1968 was a God-awful year for us in Vietnam...deaths were through the roof...nasty hippies were taking over Berkeley and San Francisco. Moral decay had just jumped on the fast train. This song somewhat addresses that.
Shame a lot of people remember him for his fat appearances in Las Vegas, not to mention being found on the toilet after a bout of intense straining. He was cool here though...
I've been listening to Elvis since I was a baby, im only 22! And still prefer this over anything that has come out recently. Thanks Grandma and Grandpa for the great taste in music! Me and the King also share the same bday ;)
influence artists forever. and they will always show his movies on television on his birthday and on the anniversary of his death. real music lovers will be blown away by him. his music makes me think i was born in the wrong decade. i live in hawaii and i would have loved to have been at his aloha from hawaii concert in the seventies. matter of fact i would have loved to be alive in the fifties sixties and seventies just to see him perform, even if i had to fly there on a plane.
a couple days ago here on youtube someone said 50 years from now no one will know who he was. im here to say that thats not true. the world will always know who Elvis Presley is. im 24 years old. he died ten years before i was born. yet i grew up knowing his songs. when i have kids they will growing hearing his music too because i will always love Elvis. as long as there are adults who love Elvis there will be kids and teenagers who know who he is. and his music will continue to
Let me also add that he believed in the Second Amendment in a very open way. He was known to carry a firearm. I say he bekieved in setting a great example for others!
I believe it is notable that he had quietly watched the assassinations of J.F.K. and Robert. Then came out of retirement shortly after seeing the third man killed in the name of freedom, equailty and the god of his understanding.
There he was!! All slicked up and lookin pretty in that white suit!! Singin his heart out. He gave it all he had. I feel the spirit of God from this performance!! Brings tears to my eyes. As a southern Christian woman, Bama girl, I'm so glad he did this. Made me proud of him!!
I love the commentary introducing this video. I sang this at age 17 with my best friend (like Elvis/Celine) in a variety show (on youtube) and he was adamant we do the song...and after one practice, I knew why. It's beautiful. We didn't have much practice but didn't only sing it, we FELT if from our hearts. Mike is a huge Elvis fan and I a big one and now I know the background of the song so, hey, thank you!
I still remember seeing him perform this on his 68 tv special and it completely blew me away. No one ever has or ever will sing with the kind of passion Elvis sang with and this song just goes right through your body and you feel every word he's saying. The greatest talent of all time, in my opinion. He deserved the title, The King. He will always be missed. BTW, I saw him in concert on New Years Eve in 1975.....a memory I will always cherish.
@SherryAnn68 I was 9 when we watched this on TV. The story of the comeback - training like a boxer, getting a tan (he wasn't big on suntans), and reclaiming his star after the British Invasion with absolutely and undeniable success - is one of my favorite music stories. When he took the stage trim, tight and in leather, that was it - Elvis was back in a big way. On this one, "out there in the darrrk... there's a beckoning candle" always shivers my spine. Wow.
fantastic song by the king we had the best sad he was taken to soon he had much more to give a voice no one will ever forget old or young bless the kingxxx
Personally, I find this to be the best Elvis' song. And he sang it with such a passion. Just observe his face expression at 2:23. That cannot be acted. I always get goosebumps when I see that. Absolutely priceless!
@edvard1970 I am a huge Elvis fan and have suffered numuerous insults and put downs due to my age, 30, as a kid. BUT I AM A HUGE ELVIS FAN, and anyone who is worth their salt should know that his particular clip is an enactment, a recording, Elvis lip syncs the whole song, This and the 1955 screen test of just Elvis on stage wiht a guitar, his hair not yet died, plus the movies, are the only times Elvis has lip synced to any ofhis music, Pleae dont try to argue with me...
@andykshipp so what? he lip syncs only because it was a pre-recorded televison special. Any Elvis fan knows that is was his own voice he is lip syncing to. Get over it. Enjoy his voice. Enjoy his performance. Enjoy his music.
who is the crazy person that dislikes this video all I can say to that one person who dislikes it is they don't know the meaning of real music . Elvis had more talent in his little finger then any performer befor or after him will ever have. Elvis is King. I LOVE ELVIS. May he sing to us as we enter heavens gates. RIP Elvis .
when listening to an artist, ask yourself, do i believe that he believes what he's singing? if the answer is yes, you get songs and performances like this...
This song is one of Elvis most felt songs! He truly singsit straight from his heart...very pure & yet so very powerful! Thanks so much Elvis...Thanks for all the memories from the very beginning...until now!
In my mind, one of his best performances ever, and though making a time specific reference to MLK, is timeless in its intentions of peace and understanding.
This song is what made me realize that Elvis was not the racist everyone claimed he was --- why would a bigot sing a song with such obvious references to MLK?! Besides no man who was this pretty could be a bigot!!!!

I sat in front of the "Tube" in 68 and watched as he sang this song, I was already a big fan of "E" but as I listened, and watched him sing this song live. He entered my soul, and I became a true Elvis Fan forever!!!
Took the wife to grace-land last week, and although not really a big Elvis fan, I was amazed at the lifestyle and things at his place in memphis. i really like his music!!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!! I have listened to and have seen this clip my whole life and every time I see it I STILL get goosebumps! If you are ever in Vegas I highly recommend VEGAS, The Show... you will know why!
