This is silly. But understandable at a hotel for other non security related reasons.
I checked in to a expensive hotel and asked to pay in cash once. They never asked for ID but they where somewhat suprised and had no rutines for it. On check-out they had no registered payment because there was no card on file so they had to call the clerk from the night before at home and ask her if she had taken a cash payment...
