The bible is full of metaphors and is cryptic-not literal. The lost translation of the "commandment" you are referring to, as is my understanding is: "Thou shall not murder thy fellowship in thought or deed." There are older documents then the bible. God did say in Exodus 20:4 that they should not make any graven image. Specifically, God told them not to do this because He did not want them to "bow down to them or serve them." (Exodus 20:5)

In Numbers 21, God was not telling violating His own command, but was being gracious to them and providing a way for them to be healed of the snake bites. When the Jew looked to the bronze serpent and believed God's word, they were healed.

Great questions.  First, God punished the Israelites for their idol worship (turning away from worshiping the true God) and for not helping the weak by putting them into exile. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel all speak of this.

Christianity is not hypocritical when it speaks of both love and judgment because there is one God who is the Creator of all things. We belong to Him and He deserves our love and worship. When we refuse to do so, He gives us the punishment we deserve.
