The young Ukranian baritone Andrei Bondarenko, winner of the leider prize at the recent Cardiff Singer of the World, puts this performance in the shade, he is so superior in every way - he has a great career ahead of him. Go to the singer of the world site and you can hear his performance - simply sublime!
He sings the phrases very disjointedly which is generally unlike him. Some of his vowels are a bit oddly formed as well in more than the fact that they are German.
Oh my good... this is soooo beautiful! His German is excellent and I cannot stop listening to this piece, I have it from his CD 'The very best of TH' - excellent. And his last 'zurück' is simply beautiful.... so full of passion and so soft and so carefully sung.
Thomas Hampson has performed this aria much, much better I'm sure. He sounds hoarse on a few of the high notes... the voice isn't sitting up in its best resonating spaces and the vibrato is wobbly. That said, he's always expressive and the natural colors in his voice are still pleasant.
@papoocanada I would love to see more of the unseen repertoire like this on opera stages. I'd love to see new stories, and actually be in the dark about whats going to happen next in the story for once. We all know the story of Tosca, and Carmen, and Boheme. The sad thing is though is that smaller and medium houses have to put on the big name operas like that to stay in business :( one can hope though. I certainly am.
Gorgeous! Yes, a bit slow, BUT, the singer truly understands the composer's intention and delivers it magnificently. As does the conductor. Bravissimo!
sounds like he´s not too comfortable with this slow tempo. It´s also quite hard to make anything of all the ritardandos and ritenutos when it´s this slow. The recording with Hermann Prey feels quite natural in terms of tempo.
Unbelievable. I came to look this up because my teacher says he wants me to sing this a few years from now and I can't wait. This is honestly one of the most beautiful baritone arias I've ever heard.

I get teary-eyed each time I hear Thomas Hampson sing the Tanzlied. Although this is not his best performance, it is no exception.

Opera meravigliosa di un compositore purtroppo poco conosciuto, poco apprezzato e sottovalutato.
Questa opera e al livello di Tosca.Anche Puccini aveva riconosciuto in Korngold un grande talento.

beautiful opera, dont understand why its not in the repertory ........one's get tired of the same Toscas, Aida and Carmens.

@papoocanada One never gets tired of Tosca ;) but I definitely support your point, this opera should be performed more often!

What was wrong with him that evening? His mezzavoce sounds awful at times. Maybe he`s getting old :)
