I actually have had a character sneak attack himself. It was a doppelganger assassin. I rolled a natural one on my death attack, and the DM made me roll a fortitude save as a joke. I fucking died. That bastard.

Not all bards suck, depends on the player. If the player doesn't know how to play, s/he'll suck no matter what class. It just so happens that bard is a really hard class to play, since its role is mostly just supportive. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Agreed, a good player can usually use a bard extremely effectively. A former DM of mine called them (as loathe as I am to use an MMO term) "the off-rogue/sorcerer/fighter." Go one way and the Bard will suck, keep a nice balance, pray for a good party and point-buy and the Bard will succeed. I played one up till level 11 when I retired him for a Beguiler.

The former characters are Undead, as opposed to dead. Mort Kemmnon is a necromancer, so he brought them into undeath, kind of like resurrecting them.
