Technically speaking, while the cars that had entered the intersection and blocked your way were wrong and could be ticketed, you could be as well. The law says you are only allowed to proceed on a green if the way is clear, which is clearly was not. Two wrongs don't make a right.

I see it happen all the time...or the other extreme..they're so afraid to move into the intersection for a turn that they sit there at the stopping line when the light is green..then you're stuck at the intersection for 3 or 4 light cycles...the unfortunate thing with your situation is while they're not the sharpest pencils in the bunch, but they still have the right of way...I agree though..if you can't clear an intersection, don't enter it.
