Good Standing waves are hard to find. Bungee surfing can be done on LOTS more places on rivers. Plus, these guys can't do any board tricks. Bungee surfing brings skateboard tricks to the river.
That looks like a lot of fun! I've seen people ride the wave by facing upstream while paddling before (on this river, in fact), but never seen someone surf in a river!
Thats soo awesome I went to jackson hole Wyoming in 2001 during my family's drive across the US we live in NY and drove all the way to California and back making a huge loop. it was the best vacation ever.
the wave is surfed at river flows between 8000-11500 cfs above that its not rideable! So if you surfed this wave is cant be much different than this video!
I surfed this back in '97 in early summer when the water was REALLY moving -- and it was ice cold. Like Alex says, crossing the river is the scariest part, so much water moving. Also, once you decide to stop (or you fall), you've got about a 10-second window to make it over to the eddy on the side, or you will end up having to float WAAAAAY down the river before you can find somewhere to get out...
I'm with scnewman67, I'll take 12-foot Huntington Beach closeouts any day over Lunch Counter.
@db332y i think it would be cool if they could find a way to surf the river the same way we kayakers run them. float down & do whatever flatwater stuff you feel like when it's calm, & enjoy the play spots when you get to them. i feel like the basic concept of nailing a pair of slippers to the boards would do the trick--provide a sturdy place to put your feet for the rougher water while still allowing an easy escape. maybe i should patent that...

This is surfing not skurfing. Skurfing was created by a group of Fresno, CA. kids in 1979-80. They tied wood planks to ropes from fixed positions. Water current used the same concept as boat propulsion.
I surfed Lunch Counter on a huge June river run off day back in 1999 and it's hairy, you face so much water volume here! I rather face 12 foot Huntington Beach closeouts, then surf that place again at 4-6 feet. Very fun, but intimidating. When your 22 hours away by car from salt water, its a great fix!
It feels like the 80's...this whole vid
