The key to Orson Scott Card's success, in my humble opinion, is that he embraces the para-normal, even the spiritual. Lack of this makes the materialists the myopic, gibbering idiots they are. Card does not see the relative stone knives and bearskins of even our most cutting-edge technology as capable of anything more than barely apprehending reality. This, above all his other gifts, is the key to Card's greatness.
@Wikipunani i completely agree with you i also thing another thing that adds to his greatness is his choice to be detailed not to be simplistic. he chooses to go in depth with the culture and personality of each person. i was amazed at out he chose to make the enviroment of lusitania and how the piggies religion was real. it amazed me and left me dreaming of this wierd ecosystem but amazing at the same time these things also add to his awsome greatness!
@butmunch34 I envisioned them to look like monstrously warped versions of pigs with long knife-like ears, claws, very skinny bodies, snout and sharp crooked teeth. they said they looked really creepy, but it wasn't a very detailed description.
I also imagined Lusitania to look similar to Tatooine from Star Wars
great job on the vid... hope youtube doesn't edit it lol. help me here... can anyone explain what the piggies look like. i am reading SFTD for the first time
They'er kinda like mammalian creatures, bipedal, furry, with tree-climbing blades on their shins and pig-like faces. They're meant to look primitive as opposed to the buggers.
i preferred "Ender's Game," but this one was deeper, and Orson Scott Card only wrote "Ender's Game" so that there would be a foundation to write the story he really wanted to present, "Speaker for the Dead."
Personally, I liked the Shadow Series better, the one that followed Bean on Earth rather than Ender on Lusitania. Speaker for the Dead was very good, but a lot harder for me to get a grip on because everything was told so matter of factly, and while Card did a good job explaining things and why things were the way they were, I kind of like the political war on Earth. I liked Petra, Peter, and Bean more than I liked the characters from Speaker for some reason. They related easier.
Your speaking of Shadow of the Hedgmon. And the Starways Congress didnt want the piggies off Lusitania because of the Descolla(sp) Virus. All of the Ender Books are fantastic and it just blows my mind that there hasnt been a major commitment made into making this story into a series of films.
I've read over Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind again. It is actually quite interesting, albeit a little confusing. I'd say I still like Bean's story a little more on a relative level, but I like the way Card explains things in the Ender books. When Ender doesn't understand something, neither do we. They are all very well written and it's hard to choose between the two series.
Yeah shadow series was great. i too cant decide between either but i guess i lean towards shadow a little cause its war here on earth and its got allthe battleschollers fighting each other.
Me too, I have the entire Shadow series and the Ender Series. The Ender series were spread through thousands of years, yet the Shadow series was better.

I don't hold of the shadow series. I can't get into it. It reads as if geared to adolescents.
