I know that what I'm about to say is silly, but for some reason it just tickles me a bit to hear someone of Asian descent with a southern accent. Again, I don't mean anything rude by it, and I know it's silly, but it tickles me some. =)
Also, thank you for such great instructional videos - I've definitely been using them. =)
I wish everyone that does cooking vids would make them step by step and clear like you do. The screens of text help greatly too, because you always remember what you read more. Thank you... I have been wanting to know EXACTLY how to prepare rice and then make fried rice for quite some time now... I kept screwing it up.
@LizardAK40 One of my friends used to always eat this mixed with salsa when she was dieting - I know it sounds strange, but it's actually quite good. Thank you for watching :)
i love to cook and almost all of my recipes are a success. For some reason though, I could never get rice right! LOL thank you for this simple, step-by-step video, it helped a lot. =)
@polodrew94 That is actually an old pot that I bought in a set which I think I purchased at K-mart . I loved that pot, but since this video I've actually thrown it out - the non stick coating was coming off a bit. But any large non stick pot with a lid will work for this recipe :)
hello i just want to say that you have been such a blessing to me lol!!! i just got married and my husband really enjoys asian food so your recipes have helped me become a good cook lol. thanks and dont stop posting
@R0KER13 HAhahaha... same here! I can cook just about anything very well and then when it came to white rice i completely blew it. I feel like a dumbass watching this video lol. O well.
Sushi rice is steamed to cook it, but it is a different type of rice. It is a short grain rice which is stickier than the rice I use here. Plus sugar and vinegar are added to the sushi rice to give it flavor as well :)
I turn the heat off after it gets a good boil with the lid on. Keeping low heat on it is not necessary in my experience. That way you don't have to watch it.
With a tougher rice like brown or wild rice you have to simmer it longer.
good one, but isn't real steamed rice meant to be cooked on chinese level wooden pots, I don't know the exact name. By the way, I always cook it this way and then I add peas or some other vegetables. Or I make fried eggs scrambled and then mix it with the rice.
No, this is just a basic recipe. Once it's done you can add whatever you want. I usually add a little soy sauce, hot chili garlic sauce and ginger; or just top it with a stir fry :)
When I was young I lived with my Chinese grandparents for a while and learned a lot from watching my grndmother. Now when I cook some of these recipes I use the same basic ingredients as she did, but sometimes I taste it as I go along. I usually end up adding a little something or subtracting until it tastes amazing to me :)
I know a lot of people rinse the rice before cooking. I've never done this - there is no particular reason, although it may make the rice a bit more sticky because of the starch residue. This also may make it easier to eat with chopsticks :)
I wanted rice like in a restaurant, ya know like how it's dry, hard, and clots easily. Mine always comes out too soft and moist. Does the vented lid really matter? Let it sit longer? What should I do?
The vented lid lets moisture escape which takes it out of the rice. You can simply let it sit for about 5 to 10 min and then take the lid off and let it sit another 10 minutes and there should be less moisture in the rice :)
White steamed rice is served alongside dishes that have lots of sauce. Therefore the rice soaks up the flavor of the sauce and we don't want it to be too salty. Also, some eat this rice with soy sauce which already has a large amount of salty flavor as well :)
Actually that is a different rice - it's the sushi rice ( a smaller grain) which has vinegar and sugar added. If u google "sushi rice" you can usually find an easy recipe for it :)
hi preeti:: I m begining with chinese rice preparation: and my twoo first times were a disaster:: cause I read somewhere else in the net: that you must use 3 cup of water for each rice cup:: wrong; I ll try your way and I let you know:
Try letting it simmer a little longer. Mushy rice on the bottom is not normal, but sometimes because of differences in pot sizes and stove burners, cooking time maybe a bit longer :)
Hi- this is just a simple overview of how to make plain steamed white rice. I usually serve this rice with stir fries that have a flavored sauce. So the rice soaks up the sauce and needs no additional spices :) It will probably last until your last period. I would place it in an a sealed container and place an absorbent paper towel on top :) Thanks for watching.
thank you for explaining it like i was a 2 year old. it helps A LOT, you talk clear and very loud, my girlfriend will love my suprise meal i make her with my new wok! thanks again!!

I assume this is non-instant rice since it's on the stove for 30 minutes? Does instant rice work well with fried rice dishes?

This is regular rice; but you can use instant rice to make fried rice. Just make it the day before and refrigerate it overnight :)
