  • This is the best song on this album.

  • @devilwithnosocks Roger that without doubt! Good call M8!

  • this was a milestone in heavy rock production...............no band had previously sounded like this..............it certainly influenced me................

  • This song started it all for me...young teenager, wanted to blow it all out.

  • Diese absolut kicks ass, big time!

  • For sure, I agree, there's no reason why they hadn't the same sucess with this album like other bands, great guitar sound, rhythm and the fire inside....

  • @1949springsteen They had a terrible deal/management

  • @hedleyazg

I recently read Sammy's book (Red) and I agree. It seems like he got shit on for much of the early part of his career. Luckily, he is a hard worker and came out on top! Love this early stuff, too!

  • i just love the tone of this guitar player and also the way sammy sings they were one of the best american rock bands for sure

  • Poetry in music!

  • Gotta love that funky break at 1:37!

  • @somedkram Thats 70s all the way!

  • I grew up with this! love it! And sammy's voice captivated me from the beginning!

  • You have rocked the nation Sammy. Keep on Rockin it.

  • really, how the hell ya go from MONTROSE to a name like CHICKENFOOT? lol, I know, is a peace sign, but...chickenfoot? geez Sammy, drinkin too much of your brew bud! Mercy, first time I saw Montrose they were the Bckup band ... I wanna say for BlackOakArkansas.. have to do a search, thats goina drive me crazy, crazier I should say!! early 70's, I kno that, lol, gotta google 4 sure, 2 C if it was SHC or the Summit? tickts < $4.95 uppr, $5.95 lowr, $6.95 floor, we thought tht was HIGH!! lol

  • @sweet72359 No idea. I kinda thought Sammy Hagar was going to use Red Rocker or stick with the "Sammy Hagar" band name.

  • the album knock you out ,,

  • geez, his voice hasnt changed at all. too bad his lyrics are nonsense now. well, have been for some time.

  • Yes, I remember when this came out, and Beaker Street played Rock The Nationa and Rock Candy all the time. Great time, Great Band...

  • The Whole Album Kills...

  • Gotta love the cowbell at the beginning.

  • The beer would flow and the smoke would smoke. The party was never complete without this LP on the turntable! Good times and good friends made memories never to be forgotten.

  • So so good...rocking man

  • I believe that this track/album was released in Europe 1974 and it was really something. It is interesting to follow how the recording technique changed between 1965 and 1974. Listen (youtube) to something really f.....g good with a bloody driving beat from 1965. THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". The drums are in the background the same with the rhythm guitar. A couple of mic:s in the studio and then count to four!

    No samples and overdubs! Awesome!!!!!

  • Awesome. Subscribed. Thanks for the post. Fucking rocking.

  • I Totally Agree. This is walking the bass, drums good stuff. Produced well, and recorded very well ! Stan

  • I saw Montrose when this came out. along WITH Uncle Ted Nugent... YES! Lady's and Gents we did have the best music in the history of this planet. now if we would just stop phucking around with Geo Political BS.. fire them all. put on trial get back what was once ours. ie JOBS.. and then we can start rock'n once again

  • I saw Montrose last month and it was pretty good, i got it recorded too, on tape, soon make digital & upload, the current singer sounded a lot like sammy too, great show!!!

  • The best thing Sammy Hagar has ever done.

  • should i risk getting fired to attend this concert tonight? ... i am 19 years old

  • MORE COWBELL,NOW!

  • Saw Montrose in Dallas this weekend. Good and loud. Just like when I was a young-un!

  • IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE BEST AUDIO QUALITY OF THE ORIGINAL STUDIO VERSION OF THIS SONG -, THIS IS IT ! Arguably better than the "High Quality" posting also on this Page (which sounds like a "remastered" version). To maintain this level of quality on a down-load (using Freecorder, etc.), chose the WEBM option. Also, a "CD" quality audio recording software (like "Audacity" free down-load) is likewise a good choice. (Hint: A cable from the "head-phone-out" jack to the "mic-in" jack will work.)

  • not one of the best, THE BEST straight ahead rock album ever recorded. end of story.

  • coole Hard-Rocking mucke

  • Damn this album is an hard rock giant.

Metal and hard rock will always be around, the only people who think it went away are posers.

  • It's Rocktober People!!! Time To "Rock The Nation"!!!

    Thumbs up if you agree!!!!

  • Only now does greatness come to light! Such an explosion of creativity during that era... every weekend, just super shows to drop in on.. these "secondary bands" touring the country. Stacks and stacks of amps, no earplugs.I saw ELO with 300 other folks, they jammed on Roll Over Beethoven for 30 minutes while everyone danced. Now-a-days, perhaps better musical skills, but not soulful jammin Jack!

  • This just rocks. Nothing today comes close to touching it.

    Fuck!

  • We were rockin on Cherokee Lake in Tennessee! Some still are!

  • @gwillakerz * DOUBLE THUMBS UP * ^^

  • aaahhhyeahhh..classic

  • im going to Montrose COncert Tommarrow YEEAAHH!!!

  • Oh my god wow what an opening song for the best album ever made this record is better than the hottest action you could have in a really hot place with an extremely hot chick! AWESOME!

  • Man, the Montrose-Hagar collaboration was just awesome. Rock the Nation is definitely one of the greatest rock anthems ever produced. Never tire of this song.

"Been a long education but my homework is done.... about to rock the nation." Always laugh when I hear that set of lyrics. I guess rock and roll is no joke. Rock on and forget the Emo crap that passes for profundity today.

  • remember no trains to heaven by be bop delux? check out black stone cherry - blind man or black tide...there is hope

  • wheres the fenin vidieo

  • Partied to this album too many times to count!!!

  • Is this the song the Edge is hatin' on in It Might Get Loud? The guitar is great, what is the problem? (confused)

  • Great LP , rocks so hard , a must in your collection .

  • @skunkdad7 buying it today!

  • Talk about PREHISTORIC, WOW!!

  • My God, beatiful music by Montrose!!!

  • First real concert I went too, Winterland San Francisco, 15 years old. Montrose was fucking amazing

  • great album-still rocks!! thanks

  • This is the first time I've ever heard it, fantastic!

  • I can't believe this album never comes up on lists of best debuts ever, its as good as Van Halen or any other hard rock first effort you can name..

  • @Veaseify You are absolutely RIGHT! The only reason I can think this band was never bigger was because Montrose started dicking around with the sound on " Paper Money", putting organs in (though, if it is done right, is OK). They never had a vocalist like Hagar,,,,,,, should have NEVER let him go.

  • @michaelHda Hagar left on his own...said something to the effect.."the only thing worse than NOT being in a band with Ronnie (montrose) was....being IN a band with ronnie....lol

  • @Veaseify better than van halen because van halen sucks

  • idiot

  • @Veaseify

Its not even close to the first Van Halen record. This is a decent album nothing super about it, it does have a few a good tunes and Rock Candy is the strongest tune, but after listening to it again after all these years it sounds old and Ronnies solos sound generic.

  • @Veaseify it's on mine my man matter of fact i think one

of the reasons the band didnt last was how the hell were they

supposed to top this? or even stay close to this level?

  • @Veaseify Better

  • 18 years old, Montrose blasting on my roommate's JVC turntable with the diamond stylus, a Maui Wowie haze floating through our 5th floor dorm hallway at CMU.Take me back, brother!

  • 1980 for me,,driving my first car 1970 chevelle ss 396 4 speed just into my senior year,,wow fun across the nation,,,now i got a toyota,,,,lol miss that car blasting this with the super tuner

  • 1980 for me,,driving my first car 1970 chevelle ss 396 4 speed just into my senior year,,wow fun across the nation,,,now i got a toyota,,,,lol miss that car

  • I got a fevah....

  • this song i cans played on my guitarra juslike the record

  • This is the Sammy Hagar that could have replace David Lee Roth, not that Kenny G of rock from the 80's.

  • @4threconmarine yeah youre kinda righta about that hey imagine micahel bolton singing with this band just kidding

  • ........it's been a long education, but my homework is done!!!!

  • i though us aussies new how to rock.....

    these guys are sick....

  • @diamondog99...Oh yeah, brother man...don't EVER sell yourself short! Oz CERTAINLY knows how to ROCK!!!

But yer right...Montrose was an asskicker of a rock'n'roll band!

  • a few groups copied Montrose,s sound

  • The best example of that dense, warm, perfectly spatially separated production that is completely lost today with digital recording, which keeps everything at the same volume and presence level and totally sterile. You can only get this classic sound with analog recording, and it is just totally superior. Listen to this album on a high end turntable system with big ass old school speakers and you will be blown away. Over 30 years old and still nothing sounds better. Ted Templeman is a god.

  • This song by Montrose Rocks!!! One of the best songs of the '70's. This should be an American Anthem.

ROCK THE NATION PEOPLE!!! KEEP THE SPIRIT OF ROCK ALIVE!!!

  • 19 years old, Montrose blasting on the 8 track car load of friends, cooler full of beer, cruising to party at Gun Lake.

  • @rpminc12 wish i colda been there

  • @elvispresley718 Wish you could have been there too, Elvis. The best time of our lives.

  • yes they are a american band from the 70's great rock and roll

  • This song rocks the nation!

  • @josephine938 ....your not wrong...the walls are shakin down here in aussie as well

  • One of the greatest hard rock albums ever.

  • Comment removed

  • I tried to use this song in a skatevideo edit and it got muted, how are you able to use it?

    It's still a great song

  • my ass is officially kicked!

  • YYEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!

  • Why doesn't rock radio play this great stuff?

  • @smilingpug Because radio is pre-programmed suck ass bullshit. But you knew that...

  • I can see why Van Halen used this album as the model for what they wanted their debut to sound like.

  • One of the best rocksongs ever made!!

  • I hear this album and it reminds me or Strawberry E Z Widers!!

  • @Db60Dc19 lol I hear ya, man. Or Zig Zag Wheatstraws. :)

  • not overlooked by real rockers

  • Remember the first time I heard this....was in the army, and me & my bros were smoking some GOOD weed!

  • @michaelHda

Me too ... stationed at Fort Hunter-Liggett in Jolon, California.

  • ah,the seminal ted templeman/don landee sound

    luv the smooth fuzzy guitar

  • Montrose definitely American - but got a lot of play in the UK during the NWOBHM - New wave of British Heavy Metal - and sometimes get bracketed with that. Sammy Hagar (singer here) did a tour at the time and played with some of the NWOBHM bands - notably Def Leppard

  • Whoa!!! Haven't heard this song in years!!! This song kicks ass!!! If this song came out today it would still kick ass!!! Hard to believe this album was recorded in 1973.

  • Denny Carmassi was a great drummer, and Montrose was a great band.

  • This song ( and the whole album) redefined how rock music should be played IT`S A MASTERPIECE, well it was untill Iron Maiden covered it..... Why try to copy / cover something as perfect as this..... Montrose got it right first time.

  • The great start, Ronnie Lord Montrose.

  • if your listening to this you are one cool dude! just like me

  • Simply one of the best kick @ss rock albums of all time (right up there with Humble Pie's Smokin'). Every cut is top notch material. One of the forgotten 'best of' albums that was never titled a 'best of' album.

    Kids today have no clue.

/High school graduate/freshman in college in 1974. The good ol' days, when rock music wasn't political crap with sappy lyrics. Just straight forward, take no prisoners rock n' roll.

  • @tealeaf56 HEY, NOT TRUE!!! I graduated in 08', and I understand what rocks about. It's just annoying, because theres so many stupid people that when you play this sweet stuff, no one recognizes it or gives a shit, because it isnt overplayed on the radio 700 times a day. But I ain't givin up. Sooner or later (hopefully sooner), people are going to give up feeling sad for themselves and give up this politically correct shit and just start rockin.

  • @tealeaf56 hey im a kid today and i lisen to montrose

  • @tealeaf56

I saw Montrose with Humble Pie and Spooky Tooth on the same bill after they did their first album. It was a great show. HP didn't have Frampton in the group any more. Have always thought that this was one of my top ten fav. albums.

  • You'll git it... Trust him.

  • Most under-reported album of all time.

  • Every song is great.

  • This is class, I bought this album back in the 70s and their follow-up Underground, then saw them live in London at Charlton Football Ground 1974, The Who were headlining.

This is a fantastic band, as good as anything out of the USA.

  • "Smoke a bag a night" was Wilber's motto. This song rocked every Blue Oyster Cult car that he and his troubadors rigged up and crashed. On 8 Track and with the best Jensen speakers at the time, cruising with these homeys was always a blur.

  • Wow was für ein amtlicher hammer von früher

  • you are so right Rock the nation and Space Station are legendary rock tunes. Rock on boys

  • Sammy was a better guitarist than Ronnie Montrose, and he was just the singer in a band named after the guitarist (Montrose), just like the band he was in later, except Edward was better than Sammy at guitar.

  • The funny thing about this, and it's not that funny, is the producer kept saying one more time. So we hear this version, which is fantastic,

  • This album is awesome ! If you do not have it , get it !

  • wow, this takes me back to HS 1n the 70's, hanging out by the track, and partying, and nobody busting your chops about it, Hillcrest HS Queens, NY

  • @1falconeye2 NO WAY! What class were you at Hillcrest?! I was class of '77. Great memories!

  • @robertjohnson487 Class of 78, my name is Liz

  • DAMN!! this album still blow's me away!!

  • brings back alot of very good memeries

  • Got the speakers cranked and sitting here air drumming!!! How many albums had the sucess that this on did? Boston, Frampton, G & R, Nazereth. Four bands (and G&R is a a much later version) of albums everyone had and has zero bad times on them. Thanks Red

  • ONE OF THEE MOST UNDERRATED ALBUMS OF ALL TIME! WHY WON'T RADIO PLAY THESE FUCKING GREAT SONGS?

  • @smilingpug money and to make way for garbage and crap, what else?

  • Comment removed

  • maybe the best hard rock album ever. it's in the mix.

  • Some of Sammys finest moments were with this band I just found them cause of Iron Maidens cover of i got the fire

  • @EddieVH666 i got the fire cold rips. it was by far the best tune on Montrose Paper Money album. hard rock.

  • I have had this album since 1974 and still have a record player to boot. This is true music with rhythm and actual instruments not like the phoniness of rap music and the chaotic noise of some heavy metal. God Bless you !

  • one of the best albums made

  • As far as I know, Ronnie Montrose popped into the public eye doing session work (Van Morrison, Gary Wright, etc), then played in the Edgar Winter Group (They Only Come Out At Night), then suddenly this power monster burst out of nowhere in '73. I've had my druthers about Sammy Hagar's solo career, but here the man and his guitar crunching boss clobber you when you least expect it and drag you into their camp--you will not be allowed to leave until it's over. That's what good rock 'n' roll does.

  • One of the best pure rock albums...yes, I said albums....EVER! Not a bad song at all. This opening cut set the tone. Great show starter too. Highest praise Ronnie!

  • redbirdfan126. Thanks for uploading. I've been waiting for this album to be uploaded for a long time. In my opinion every hard rocker should own this album. All 8 songs are excellent. It's meant to played at full volume and just let it rip. A classic hard rock album.

  • wow, I hadn't heard this in a verrry long time! thanks for posting!

  • Rock n' roll all nite isn't the rock n' roll national anthem, ROCK THE NATION is the only song worthy of that title

  • Most underplayed album on ROCK radio .... EVER.

  • sick!!!!!!!! ufb!!!!! this is real music not the bullshit they make today. i smoked many a doodie listening to this in the omega!!!!

  • @GRILLBUOY101 LOL yeah..me too.

  • Now if this isn't a rock anthem I don't know what is.....

  • F'ing A right!! SweetMeat Forever!!

  • Rock The Nation, F'ing A !! KSHE95

  • Alright! Come on now!

  • One of the greatest debut albums ever, badly needed in the UK at the time!

  • Montrose is the best band ever

  • UPありがとうございます!この曲も最高にノリがいいですね!Thank you!

  • I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I'm diggin' it, man.

  • Keep listening over and over, then you will "get it" .... Rock On

  • Uh, 'get' what exactly?

  • @redbirdfan126 The hidden Satanic message in the song.

  • @mbfree62 damn straight!!!!

  • @redbirdfan126 he says that he thanks you and that he likes the song and it's a good one, isn't it?

  • Well, I tried a online Japanese translator, so I get the jest of what you're saying. Peace, brother.

  • @fruitcakeization I couldn't have said it better. Great comment!

  • @fruitcakeization くそあなたはこのクイズで言う何か?

  • The best track on the best electric guitar album ever!!!

  • these guys were just as good as aerosmith, damn shame they couldn't keep it together and were overlooked.

  • @mikexlong Not by me. Been playing this album for nearly 40 years :0)

  • @DaMuttzNutz fuckin' eh man, I'm 22 and I've been diggin' rare 70's rock since I was 17.

  • @mikexlong -Yeah and no...Aerosmith is like the Rolling stones now...too old, too long...give it up!!! This is truly CLASSIC cuz they don't jam together no more!

  • @matthewme23 no doubt. I was of course referring to Aerosmith as their '70s contemporaries...not the steel wheelchairs they are now (and have been for about 25 years)

  • @mikexlong better than Aerosmith =l.

  • @DiscoFunktikonikyte this was definately better than aerosmith's debut IMO.

  • @mikexlong Sammy went onto create his own band Sammy Hagar and then Joined Van Halen...

  • @SuperGlooBand he certainly did, but still very little people know of this record.

  • @mikexlong I Agree, I dont know why though, personally I was listening to it in school on the UK! so it must have been more popular in the States.
