this an example of how to get a beautiful solution out of anything. I think you know what i'm talking about with the Exotic French Sidewalk Entertainment. First of all it's funny and unexpected. Second, it's a bizarre man and performance, and not only that, but combined with the music produces in me a nostalghia and a glimpse of humanity and our existence from another place. Perfection
amazing!! many thanks. Does anybody know why Zappa started playing the mini strat? He had pretty giant fingers, so i couldn't imagine it was for ergonomic reasons.
@wndblwnsnw - thats a danish frank and don grew out back in the neighbors pool room behing an old american standard toilet. danishes should always have a BIC handy.
boy this is more than just a guitar solo, this is a composition of SUBLIME beuty (specially the last minute) what a wonderful gtr player he was, and so overlooked. people like Vai will never be able to play like this they just can play faster
I remember buying Jazz From Hell when it came out and listened to this the first time it blew me away. The bit that really got me was when you hear the guy in the crowd whistling @3:18 and I realised it was a live recording!!!
RIP Frank, no-one has come close since you left us.
He became part of my life from "We're only in it for the money" 'til "Yellow shark" inclusive his concert 1974 in Hannover where I saw the best "Mothers..."ever and with him has died an extraordinary part of my life. This guitar-solo is really dramatical to me and shows the fight of a genius with his own creativity. For me Frank lives forever.
When I heard :30 I was like W T F. Sounds I never heard before. This was really one of the solo's I enjoyed more than some of his others, because he let the music get simple, so that we could listen to his guitar ability on its own, without the big ensemble. Truly a unique guitarist. His phrasing, use of feedback, and different modes is always a fun to watch, and of course the satirical spectacles.
i've loved this solo since i was about 6 years old in 1987. right at 5:39 always sounded like an edit to me. when i got the "Video From Hell" vhs about 8 years ago and saw this, i kinda lost my shit.
re: Viinnie Colauita - the band as a group agreed on an equal take from a tour, perhaps this one. Later, Vinnie approached Frank secretly asking for a better deal than the rest of the band. Frank fired him on the spot.
@chuckeisenhardt i think that was a little earlier, wackerman was already on this tour from 82 i believe. And of course he was/is much better drummer tha VC , specially when playing polyrhythmics.
Glad this is still out there! This video is what first got me into Zappa weirdly enough, I had never heard of him since i grew up in the late 80's-90's. 88 was his last tour. Too bad I never got a chance to see the greatness live!
always loved the sound FZ got when recording out of the bass drum and Toms, esp with Vinnie Colauita - my ear tells me this is Vinnie here but I may be wrong - anyone know for sure?
this music speaks to me, and it says its ok to be yourself, it says there is more to the world than they tell you, and it says everything is gonna be fine. Once again thanks Frank
I'd prefer the video to be all Zappa, but they could have picked something worse than Exotic French Sidewalk Entertainment when they decided not to use all of the Frank video.
Of course, me too. But you know, that footage is from an amateur videotape shot by someone in the audience, it's really not easy to synchronize those things (well, it's easier today, but back in 1985 when he did it)... I doubt that Frank would find that sidewalk entertainer more interesting to go over his solo than his own guitar playing.

Zappa released this guitar solo on Jazz From Hell, an album of
computer played compositions .
I compare the inclusion of this track on the album
far removed...as far as like frying bananas in garlic butter.

This is a business man you are listening to.....also as well.
I miss him.
(PS he breaks a string in the dying seconds of this tune..)
gosiawoodman 2 years ago
Frank didn't 'make love to his guitars', he squeezed every emotion out of them....as only a 'composer' could.
He wasn't made a guitarist...he was a musician who handled the electric guitar's unique soloing ability quite personally.
He always aimed to create a composition, unlike most electric guitarists who like to repeat sonically tuneful phrases.
gosiawoodman 2 years ago 5
Frank was not just playing. He was making love to his guitar. Beautiful

I'd prefer the video to be all Zappa, but they could have picked something worse than Exotic French Sidewalk Entertainment when they decided not to use all of the Frank video.

who is "they"? Frank himself picked the video - presumably because he was unable to synchronize the audio with the video footage.
NitramZiarreh 2 years ago 2
"Unable" or "more interested in doing something else" with his time. Fair enough. But I'd like it to be all Frank.
calvindotno 2 years ago
