Not all Romanians are gypsies. And there are some... that are gypsies, but not in the bad way that you all think (begging, stealing, cheating).

Initialy they were called Ursari beacuse they use to roam around with the bears and entertain trough singing and circuses. Lautari is not a Gipsy clasification, it's a historical occupation that many gipsies are good at (musician basically) . Majority of Ursari are Lautari so there lies the confusion.

@BraedenX Lauta = lute, so the ad litteram translation of "lautar" is "lutenist". Eventually, the term "lautar" came to mean "musician". To be more specific, when we say "lautar", we usually mean either a musician playing folklore, or a musician playing at weddings / traditional festivities . Sometimes, it is used with the figurative meaning of "musician with little or even no formal training at all". "Lautareste" can mean "improvised" or "by ear" in certain contexts. Hope that helps.

Sorry, this is not gipsy music . This is traditional romanian music from south Romania. Even if some of the fidlers are gipsy it doesn,t mean the music is gipsy . Some western producers used this as gipsy music. It was a marketing isues .. an exotic music :)

Sincer, nu stiu. Ce stiu este ca inclusiv muzica turceasca dinspre partea estica a Turciei si partea europeana contine elemente comune sau similare cu muzica noastra traditionala. Raspunsul desi e logic si simplu n-are nimeni interes sa-l spuna apasat. E vorba de influentele culturale ale fostilor locuitori de pana la venirea otomanilor, de fapt mosteniri culturale de la fosta populatie de origine tracica din antichitate.
