@dhobbs2126 Metheny, and Kurt come out of the Hall tradition, whereas player like Bireli Lagrene and others are more aligned with Joe's energy and attack..Although i don't mind the Hall approach,I find that it becomes dull and lifeless after a while,ESPECIALLY when it's time to pick up the pace.Yes yes yes,Metheny can also play fast when he wants to,but sorry, there is NOOO freakin bite to his attack, and energetically nowhere near people like Bireli.Anyhow that's my take on it.
@dhobbs2126 Interesting how Metheny's name is always associated with Rosenwinkel. Here is my take on why that is..For the sake of a starting point, let's use Joe Pass and Jim Hall.Joe was argueably the more energetic and "extroverted" one of the two, with the faster execution, while,Jim was alot more laid back and introspective. Both had something to offer, but some players gravitate more towards one approach over the other, some combine.
I also forgot too mention monsters like Pat Martino and George Benson in my old school list. For some reason,i still don't think of those guys as old school. There lines always sound so fresh and modern to me,especially Martino.I love that guy.Constantly re-inventing himself
@Skepticalnature As someone who used to agree with you, I feel I should defend Kurt some. This is not the kind of music kurt should be playing, I honestly have no desire to hear this recording ever again. That being said, Kurt is an amazingly inventive and lyrical player when in the right setting like his tune, Flute (look it up on youtube)
He sounds great, its just a context thing. I want to hear Martino on this and Kurt on Flute
Sorry for all the typos in my last post.I've got that mother fucker bireli blasting in the background, and i can't help but feel a surge of adrenaline everytime i hear him play.So as a result i start typing really fast and make typos.
The only guys that i feel have that perserved the old school elements and magic are the gypsy guys.Guys like Bireli Lagrene,Angelo Debarre Andreas O'berg, and countless others.I find alot them don't get the credit or recognition that they deserve.Maybe perhaps because they are not american ,who knows. But they play like mother fuckers, and in my opinion, make people like Rosenwinkle and Metheny sound like amateurs.
@Skepticalnature Are you calling guys like Metheny boring? Maybe we are listening to different cats, but boring is definitely not something I hear said about him often. Not only is he a fantastic composer, but his playing is superb. He plays differently then the old school guys, cause he is a different player. If he played the same, you would be bitching about him copying. Say you don't like his playing, but no one with a clue would call him amateur.
@dhobbs2126 all I gotta say is for the critics to listen to Metheny's recording of All the Things You Are and his performance on Kenny Garrett's The Music of John Coltrane. Just sickeningly good...
@Skepticalnature the question is about phrasing and lines , the new perspective ... not about the speed or accuracy or some fast licks .. it is much easier to learn cliche.., never mind the level.. new dimensions ...that is Kurt and Pat way , anyway it is a matter of style and taste .. respect to everybody i think
Just so i am absolutely clear. I'm saying that the old school guys like Joe Pass,Johnny Smith,Rene Thomas,to name a few,had it all.Chord melodies,lines,etc,..They were interesting and exciting to listen to whether played fast or slow.I can't say the same about the new breed of players, whose captain seems to have been Rosenwinkle for the past few years now
@symioncion Slow doesn't have to mean boring.Listen to old school guys like Rene Thomas,Grant Green,.What about a guy like Lenny Breau?Aside from having one of the most unmatched approaches to playing, even to this day,the guy never put me to sleep when he was playing slow.I just think people like Kurt are just soooo overated.I found the same thing happened in the late 90's with Pat Metheny.Every college graduate and his cousin's next door neighbor worshipped this guy. Both boring players
@OnSugarHill Of course there is more to music than just playing fast.We all know that..However,the opposite is also true, there is also more to playing guitar than just playing slow.My opinion is that a great guitar player, especially one who is deemed and worshipped as king of kings, better be able to perform equally well both ways,in order to preserve that reputation.Alot of the gypsy players are a good example of that.Old school players like joe pass and johnny smith also illustrate my point
Sorry- it's bireli lagrene and sylvain luc jazz in marciac 2000.Check it out people. It's insane. And check out Kurt getting his ass handed over to him by an unknown named Eddy Palermo, where they are also playing stella by starlight.I'd like you guys to post an opinion on this post after checking it out.I'm curious to know what you all think
@Skepticalnature Lol some of you guys treat music as if it's a sport. Jamming with a jazz musician isn't about "handing someones ass to them." It should be an interactive conversation with one another, and not a shred off to see who can play the fastest while maintaining the changes. I mean hell, do you think anyone ever told Jim Hall "Hey Bill Evans tore you a new one on that solo"? Besides, everyone moves at their own pace. Kurt's an awesome fuckin player.
I also believe that although the "new breed" of guitar players have "evolved" conceptually, and maybe to a certain degree harmonically,I find them to be incredibly boring in comparison to the old school guys,as well as the modern gypsy guys.Just my opinion.
Kurt is an ok player, but in my opinion so overated. There are so many guys out there nowadays that can kick his ass big time.Check out a jam session with a guy named Eddy Palermo where they are playing stella by starlight. This guy Eddy is ripping him to shreds.Kurt literally sounds like an amateur. He even cuts his solo short because he knows himself that he is outmatched..Check it out...I also agree that bireli and sylvain and the gypsy jazz players kick the most ass these days
@odingr Modern players like Bireli Lagrene and Sylvain Luc are settling into my ears just fine, thank you. They also demonstrate the fact that music can move on without it being boring.Let me guess, you are a huge fan of Pat Metheny as well.
@245webster I hear what you are saying brother. The "new breed" of guitar players that everyone seems to go goo gaga over, just don't have the musical elements of the old school guys. For one thing,we don't really hear many chord melodies anymore.Baney Kessel, and Johnny Smith were masters of it.It seems to be a lost art these days.None of these guys give me goose bumps the way Pat Martino or George Benson do.I find the gypsy guys like bireli and sylvain luc to be far more interesting to listen to
@justintime63 music is moving on, thats exactly what jazz purists said about bebopers in the 40s. New music needs time to settle in the listeners ears.
A fine player.. but the problem I have with players like this is that all the attention is on the notes and not enough to the spaces between the notes...to me it becomes boring after a short time.. like listening to a speaker who just goes on and on without a pause for you to reflect on what was just said...marvelous but just not interesting..I turned it off and watched a Wes Montgomery video instead..
@wags699 Many musicians that i respect like him i can't deny his talent but i can deny that i enjoy listening to him :D If i want to listen to straight jazz even that i am a guitarist i don't like guitar into straight jazz to listen to.I like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane obviously.
Great mood, I think Kurt is a great and modern guitar player, it's not necessary to compare him to others and say this and that about his playing.
Together with Philip Catherine he's a magic sounding jazz guitarist, adorable! Thanx for sharing. Jazz is happy to have Kurt, more people will approach to jazzzz
Ye ye real nice except that i can't hear any dynamics and that is the 90% of what makes a phrase good. This cat should listen to some John Scofield,Pat martino
@PetarAtanasov87 well, for all I know, he´s a friend of Scofield. I read in a interview that Scos wife send him pizza money when Kurt had moved to New York.
@PetarAtanasov87 Dude, you cant expect me to learn you how to read and write. You abviously didnt read my post, or at least, you didnt understand it. Best regards, Sandemose
@KymeraKILLER It is a D'angelico NY-SS made by a japanese corporation called Vestax that recently sopped producing them. They are now being made in Korea with American parts. All the best.
@KymeraKILLER Just wanna add, that his guitar is modded like hell by some german builder I don't remember the name of. Similar guitars would be the Excel series by D'Angelico. They are really good and not too expensive.
@Teis9574 Thanks a bunch. I'm not really looking into getting a new axe anytime soon, I was merely curious as to how he gets his tone. I love Rosenwinkle's sound with his standards trio.
@KymeraKILLER I agree. His tone is amazing. I think it has alot to do with all the time he has spend on his pedalboard and cables. Have you got his album Reflections? He has got a really natural tone there, where you really can hear his rig blossoming - in my opinion at least! All the best.
@konshess One of the "effects" you think you're hearing is Kurt singing every note he plays through a lapel mic. I hope you find that to be a little above "average".
@konshess you probably think it would be above average playing if he bent every other note he played or if he used a tremelo bar every 5 seconds. Better yet, you would probably think this was above average playing if it wasn't jazz, but instead something easier for ur "tasteful" ears to digest. I encourage u to post a vid of urself improvising over the changes to this song, that way everyone else can confirm what I already know, that u have no clue what u are talking about.
