@XPunkRockChikaX each of them passes on a body part to the next. the 1st guy gives away 1/12 of his height to the next guy. the 2nd guy, and becomes 11/12 of his original height. the 2nd guy, receiving the 1/12(the 1st guy's hair), then gives away 2/12 of his height, making him 11/12 as well(1+1/12-2/12=11/12). this continues until the 12th guy gives away 11/12 of his height(his whole body without the feet) to empty space. so, basically there were 12 full guys, transformed into 13 11/12 hobos.

The key to the riddle is not how the men were halved, but how many men were NOT halved equally. Note the man on the top right with the black shirt was cut only by a little at the feet. Notice, also, how the man at the bottom left corner only got cut by the head just a wee bit.

before they are switched, look at the highest man with the black shirt [right]. okay when they switch, that man is cut off at the feet, but only a little, and put on the other side. that man DOES NOT go on top of another man-half. yet the LITTLE bit of foot that was left behind by it is made full by another man with feet cut off.
