Actually in thise movie they used science rather than mysticism to explain the fact that they were different. They do have blood flowing through their bodies, but their bodies are not capable of carrying oxygen throughout the blood the way a normal person does it. Therefore they have to drink the blood of others which is already oxygenated so that their bodies can function. They don't get blood, they don't get oxygen, they weaker and then eventually die.
