I saw a car hit the outside wall where there was no SAFER barrier, spin into the grass, get airborn, and flip three times. The engine then exploded. Yet the driver survived. I alsow saw a Carl Edwards flip and slam into the outside wall. He survived. This was a freak accident but still very sad. RIP Dale Earnhardt.

Dale wasn't wearing the proper gear he had some of his rigging off which stabilizes your head during a impact like this one. Have to think he hit the wall at 150-160mph.

Possibly, if he didn't change the locations of the seat belt mounts, they wouldn't have torn at impact. He like them tapered in closer to one another where they were bolted to the floor behind his seat. The raw edge on the back of his seat contributed to the tearing of his belt, thus breaking his neck on the steering wheel. Of course, the spotter inability to tell him about "car low" had a lot to do with it, too. Some people blamed Sterling for his death, I couldn't believe it!

when this happened the cars didnt have as strict safety regulations. what killed him was his neck breaking, when he hit the wall his head was obviously flung forward very, but he didnt have the side pads that they have nowadays so when he got hit by the other car his head flung around even more. if i remember correctly he died becuz he broke his neck...

Actually he did break his nec but the reason he broke it was No hans device(because they werent mandatory yet) open face helmet, out of date harnesses and they actually found a slight tear on one of the belts.

Yeah! I think there was ONE time in the actual race that the two were even close to one another, and they were side-by-side, at about the halfway mark. Jeff then got caught up in the big one with about 20 laps to go. Dale raced all the way to the last lap! How do you wreck someone on the last lap when you retire from the race 20 laps before? This was all accident, though. Sterling never meant to wreck Dale, it was just a racing incident that ended the way none of us wanted.
