i would disagree with you there. that piece was not about virtuosity, i mean just listen to it. the melody is pathetic and virtuosity is not the reason for its popularity in the 19 hundreds. even though it was the time of the virtuoses this piece became popular because of its gesture. the piano player (mostly the daughter back then) has to spread their arms widely, which was almost pornographic back then;) the gesture was scandalous, thats why it is the best selling piece of piano music ever...
