I don't see what genre's or petty stereo typing have to do with anything if you like a piece of music then you like it,I can't understand people who feel the need to put art into neat little boxes in order to be able to understand it.
wow, this is amazing! she breaks out of ANY cliche with her music, she's totally unique. i don't have anything against them, but she is NOT goth or emo or whatever the fuck people want to label her as. she's her own person with her own style.
@mmarilynmanson I know its a cliche.I know I don't need to categorize myself and that Miss Galas has never called herself goth and that it would be an insult to her as an artist to label her that. Now go listen to lame ass poseur manson music. This music is for adults kid.
Yes YOUR "goth" is a cliche, and i didn't ask you if you'd categorize yourself, and i never said diamanda galas was goth.
I asked you to tell me if you had any idea what goth is, not to tell a lame ass story about the "allknowing orchidoxycock" and your answer says enough for me.
@mmarilynmanson You are a fucking sixteen year old little emo boy. This is music for grownups and grownup talk. Not to mention you are not making any sense and you are annoying me kid.
She's got a little Cher thing going on here in this number, don't cha think? And she's SO Goth, ppp-lease, people, come on. It's not an accusation, it's just a style.
hahaha u are joking right? CHER? god i'm not sure how happy diamanda would be to be compared to that plastic thing, and goth? gothic maybe, macabre, insane, chilling, ironic etc. why do people tag anything darker than britney with goth?
NO! I'm NOT joing in the least, yoroisy. When Sonny& Cher had their variety hour Cher did this cabaret shtick on a piano in this style! Even the vocalization is similar. Try to find it here, you'll wet your pants!Plus she's a skinny bitch with long dark hair! As for Goth, come on, THIS is as Goth as it gets. Dimanda is the granny of Goth! And I imagine she actually has a great sense of humor frmo the interviews I've seen over the years so being compared to Cher might crack her up!
huh, i saw that you have saint of the pit on your profile so i guess you ARE familiar with her early work.. it's just hard for me to swallow the word gothic, having been around many self professed goths and finding them only slightly more tolerable than drunk skinheads. so SO viciously pretentious and usually not clever enough to pull it off.
I agree. If we're viewing her as a performance artist, her early work is political - pure rage. Commercially (what exists of a *commercial* DG) looks about as dark as it gets. Perusing incidental comments, it's amazing how defensive "fans" can behave.
Trying to survive through the 80's & 90's HIV/AIDS epidemic required creativy. DL was an inspiration to many of us.
As I've read here, "Goth" has many facets.
You just can't ignore that she dresses like Vampira and sings about Death, no matter how lofty an opinion one has of her work.. I still insist, DG has got to have an incredible sense of humor! She's too passionate and intelligent to lack one.
eh.. you mean gothic as in the romanticism movement right?
or gothic architecture?
i have to disagree with her being the grandmammy of goth.. are you familiar with her early work "1979 to her brother and his effect on her art"? i just find most goth "rozz and sopor aside" to be tacky and unintentionally humorous.
as for cher.. if she ever sang like this and i find it.. i'll happily listen to it.
what differende does it make is she's goth or not? or any other rediculous subculture.. she's making some fine fine music and she's got a good act too.. shouldn't that be the only thing that matters? get over yourselves..
diamanda abla hastasıyım siempre to you. My opinions about Turks are same as yours. What a pity I'm living in Turkey! It's biting. If you read this, please accept my offer about coming to Istanbul to perform the AntiTurk Night which we possibly organise next summer.

hmm the first time i saw it i was maybe 10 years in the opera house here in Stockholm the building is maybe 400 years old...
They have a nightclub in the same building Cafe´Opera and yes ive meet a ghost there it was so cool time and place was just gone i was speking with a lady from what time i dont know hmm
And futher more i dont belive in ghosts but i have meet one...hmm what to do?
so what exactly is goth about galas?apart for her more theatrichal look when performing, which,if you've ever seen an opera performance you would understand
Having been to a few operas I'm familiar with the concept of stage makeup. To the point, though. Granted, I'm just now discovering her music and vids, but I would say her penchant for dark, flowing costumes, overly dramatic stage makeup, lyrical obsession with death/suffering, self-indulgent vocalizations, melodramatic interpretive dance moves and stage presence make her a goth. Fair enough? She is the embodiment of the unintentionally comical serious "artiste." But that is just my opinion.
Some of us like to be close to darkness - not because our teen angst lingers, but because life, in itself, is dark. Why put forth negative context, simply because people enjoy themselves within a lifestyle different than your own? If they("trekkies" or "goths," as you say) are genuinely happy, it is then you who is sad for casting judgment. Humans are individuals, and there is no definite way to be, as you impose. Perhaps you have some growing up of your own to do?
She isn't goth. Actually, she's made jokes about goths. She said they imitate dead people, death itself, but they know nothing about people affected by SIDA and the last moments of their terrible disease.
"...It stinks of Velveeta..." - - - Ugggh, that is some awful faux fromage! I love the lyrics to this song, and this performance with it's semi-light-hearted piano playing is really cool!
The arguments within the comments are hilarious. If we're commenting here, we can get along.

Aren't people supposed to outgrow the goth affectations by a certain age? Nothing sadder than old goths and trekkies.
