You know the writing is amazing when the show only features four characters in the episode and my interest is still held for every moment of it. Soaps can't do that nowadays and this episode just shows why daytime is on its way out the door.
great history, thanks. did P&G own Folger's by this date? They purchased Folger's because they had gained roasting expertise with the acquisition of Big Top peanut butter, later replaced by Jif
@deadlyshoesalesman The kinescope was marked as episode #268, and the date coincides with the same episode of The Edge of Night, which premiered the same day as World Turns.
@deadlyshoesalesman I wish we had this kind of information on all the episodes. I wish we had the kinescopes for all the episodes - especially ones that look like this. I've never seen an episode from the first three decades that looks this good.
@deadlyshoesalesman I wish we had them all too, Justin. I was fortunate enough to watch from the late 60's, but I would dearly love to see all of the 50's, 60's, and 70's again. I am delighted that you enjoyed the video. I upload these episodes for individuals just like you. Thanks for watching and for your interest.
Thanks for this episode. It's nothing short of amazing that ATWT could begin with Pa Hughes and conclude with his great great grandson Casey 54 years later. We'll probably never see that type of longevity again. It's nice to see Ruth Warrick here too. Penny's reaction to the affair is a believable way to keep the Hughes clan close to Ellen also. Otherwise that bitterness could have carried over from the Lowells to the Stewarts.
This would have been from the spring of 1957 based on the way that Edie (Ruth Warrick is dressed), but since Jim Lowell would be punished for the affair by dying in a boat accident in Florida in the summer of 1957 -- this is definitely from the spring of 1957 if you wanted an more accurate date of this episode, saynotoursoap. (This based on information from the former Classic ATWT website.) Jim Lowell was the first major character on ATWT to be killed off by Irna Phillips.
@sneezyize And Pa and Edie just gave another clue as to the date, more than likely in April 1957 due to Pa mentioning the anniversary of Chris and Nancy which must have been a few weeks before this episode and had from the start of the show was on April 2nd (as we would see on the well-known April 2, 1986 30th anniversary episode) -- Irna actually started the show on April 2, 1956 with Chris and Nancy's anniversary.
Ever since I first read the ATWT history book, 15 years ago, I have wanted to see Edith Hughes. Thanks to you I now have. Her work here is so easy to get hooked on, and so different from Phoebe. I can see why she was so popular. I can see why this story helped take ATWT to #1. The scene with Edith and Grandpa is one I hated to see end. And I want to see Edith and Penny together too.
I wish they'd brought Edith back. They could have recast with Meg Mundy.

@orbit14915 P&G purchased Folgers in 1963, six years after this episode was telecast.

How do you know this is #268? Where does one find episode numbers for soaps of this vintage?

@saynotoursoap There are a lot of good soap channels on YouTube, but yours may be the best.

I've figured out this episode of As the World Turns exactly first aired on CBS-TV on Thursday, April 18, 1957.

@sneezyize And Jim Lowell's boat accident was not shown on camera.
