  • So it doesn't really work on all imac's? Or just it doesn't work with the install disc that comes with the newer macs? I have a new imac but I'm trying to upgrade the old ones with the disc that came with the new...

  • A HUGE thank you this, gave me the confidence to wipe my unstable 3 year old iMac . Following your instructions to the letter purchased the Snow Leopard disc mentioned and did a clean install backed up then went straight to Lion which is running oh so Sweetly :) Love it! my only niggle is that there is no Front Row which I used a lot for Movie Trailers. Was going to reinstall it from Leopard but went for Plex instead which knocks Front Row to the curb. Highly Recommend it and this Video! :)

  • Doing this same thing right now.....

  • Its my first time formatting and performing a clean installation on a Mac. This helped me alot. Thank you :)

  • So I'm doing this as I type. I hold option down, but I still get the chime. I don't know if that chime is irrelevant to the process or not, but I go ahead and do what you've stated. I format the drives and partition it accordingly, with GUID as well.

When I restart and hold option/alt down, no HD shows up. The only thing that appears is the disc.

I restart, and it prompts me "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer."

Any clues to what I should do?

  • @sochbat You cant do anything. The only option for you is to buy a newer mac.

  • you da man

  • wadsworth constant applies...

add &wadsworth=1 the end to go to the important part

  • thanks for the vid. Exactly what I needed.

  • Well done. I have to install my friend's Macbook from scratch, however she doesn´t have the DVDs with her. I was wondering if this could be done using a SL upgrade DVD. Thanks!

  • THANK YOU... at last I've got rid of that lion shite...

  • but i don't have the opinion to erase?

  • followed your vid and successfully clean-installed SL. thanks a lot.

slight problem now - before i could print via w/less router, now my mac cannot even see the printer. can you advise? URGENT pls.

  • INSTALL GNU/LINUX

  • @FlyDiggy OR DONT AND INSTALL AN OS THAT ACTUALLY WORKS.

Linux fanboys never seem to get tired of making even OSX nerds look good...

  • @alcaron82 i Have OSX LION AND LEAPARD installed on VBox, it's my VX-labs.

  • @alcaron82 It goes both ways. Each OS has their own appeal. Some like the speedy quirkiness of Linux, others like the beauty of OSX, and some even like the familiarity of Windows. To each their own.

undoubtedly, @FlyDiggy could have supported his response with reasons, but he didn't. That, to me, makes his argument invalid. I run Linux myself, but hey, I have my reasons to (I want to be a hipster hipster).

Summary - to each his own.

  • This is great, thanks a lot. Told me exactly what I needed to know!

  • This really helped me out! Great video!

  • I, even when absolutely certain that I'm right, will Google just in case. You should do the same, instead of flying off the handle. If there is any hope for you, you will apologize, but I don't see that happening. Oh well.

  • @wraithofwonder Wow you really can't let this go can you? Let me make this simple so that even you will understand. The description of the video clearly states the $29 upgrade disc. End of story! Then you come along with your bullshit and politics to prove a point when in reality that $9.95 version was never spoken of in the first place, hence my statement saying that this can be done (based on the $29 upgrade clearly mentioned in the description!).

  • If you missed that or forgot to wear your specs, I can't help that. But if it's guidance you need then let me dish some out for you; Google local Optometrists (as you're so familiar with the search engine). They may be able to help you.

  • Had you done a little more reading into the product that I was actually talking about instead of trying to be a smart-ass, you wouldn't look so stupid now would you? Now that you feel stupid for proving a worthless point you may leave. Close the door behind you and walk away with the little dignity you have left you pissant! Apology?...I'd rather wait for yours!

  • Put simply, there are three Snow Leopard discs. The one from the box set that is technically the only one that should allow a full install, the $29.99 retail disc that will do a full install on a clean drive and the $9.95 disc that won't even make it to the install screen if it doesn't see Leopard; these last two are both labeled as "Upgrade DVD". You could have Googled and learned of this, you could have been the better man even with Mononookie's stupidity, but you didn't.

  • Thanks for this great Tutorial! Worked fine on a 2.0Ghz 2008 Unibody MacBook.

  • Comment removed

  • I did this because I accidentally installed Ubuntu OVER mac and deleted that hard drive.... Now when i do this the Apple logo freezes and i cannot get to the install screen

  • Just did this on my Mac book pro. Works just fine! Thanks!!!

  • any idea on how to downgrade from Lion 10.7 ?? Thanks

  • Do i HAVE to use time machine to backup or can i just create a clone of my current HD and get my data back after the clean install?

  • so which option should i choose? Dont Erase or Zero Out or 7 times or 35 times?? I am currently using 10.4.11 Tiger... which will be the best one?

  • MY MAN!!!! YOU ARE THE FUCKING BEST!!! I TRUST IT YOU SO I WENT AND BOUGHT AN "UPGRADE" FOR $29.00 BUCKS AND THE IDIOT AT THE APPLE STORE SAID YOU ARE WRONG! YOU NEED TO BUY A $129.00 BOX DEAL AND I SAID I WILL PROFF YOU WRONG ..AND HERE!!! YOU ARE CORRECT!!!! PERFECT FRESHHHH INSTALLED!!! FROM A $29.00 BUCK "UPGRADE!.. I LOVE YOU!! YOU JUST SAVE ME $100.00 BUCKS!!!!!

  • I have lion installed on my mac and it won't let me reinstall snow leopard.. Will doing a clean install solve this??

  • Comment removed

  • Can you use it on a Windows Vista or WIndows 7?

  • Thanks so much for the vid. The section about disk utility really helped me out, along with the customize options. You were very thorough. Thanks From across the pond.

  • Great help, I hope:)

I have a question. - At time 4:30, is it possible to choose Macintosh HD instead of 1 TB Hitachi? Its because i have also installed Windows 7 as a partition, and dont want to delete it.

Is it still possible to make a "Clean Install", even if its only on the Macintosh HD-partition?

    Hope you can help.

  • Brilliant tutorial mate cheers!

  • I was about to do a clean install on my MacBook Pro and was just wondering if I could do it directly with Leopard.

Thanks tons for the tutorial! Just what I was looking for... and very well explained! :) Thumbs up!

  • hey shadyarmik so after you install mac os x it was like a brand new mac did you had any problems cause i need a clean install couple month from now...

  • Will this work with a Mac Mini Power PC G4 running Tiger?

  • would this work with a mac mini on panther?

  • If i do a clean install how to i back up my data is i don't have a hard drive. Can i do it with time machine?

  • so you get upgrade tiger 10.4 to the $29 leopard disc?

  • Apple didn't "lie" by the way, this is an "upgrade" disc. The license it comes with is for upgrading only so doing a fresh install on a drive without Leopard already on it voids it, thus you don't get access to support. Apple will likely still help you out if you have issues with the software, but they're under no obligation to.

  • THANK YOU for this tutorial!!! it worked perfectly!!!!!!!! thank you so much again!!!

  • What can I say? You're THE MAN!

  • Is it the same process if upgrading from Tiger?

  • if i do this and dont back up anything (because i have nothing because i bought a 2008 used macbook on ebay) will applications like safari itunes photobooth be there or will every application be gone

  • @thewaldoishere They'll all be there still, just upgraded to the Snow Leopard versions. You can just download Safari and iTunes from the Apple site for free anyway if they're no there (which they SHOULD be). Your other applications however won't be unless you choose the option to retain your data during set up. If you do a full clean install like here, they'll all be gone, nothing but what the OS comes with will be installed. Just do upgrade/keep data & get an ext drive! You'll need one!

  • dude thank you!!!!!!!

  • thanks for the tuturial!

  • i upgraded from tiger to snow leopard

  • I am new to the Mac world , however i am advanced with pc's.

i know you have answered this question above.

Can I buy the upgrade disk at a much cheaper price and install on a formatted Macbook A1181 that i just purchased?

    Thank you

  • thanks!

  • Does this work with installing the Operating System on a brand new harddrive? I'm getting a 500gb 7200 hard drive upgrade for my Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz 15.4 inch. I lost my previous discs and was wondering if I can use only this disc to install the OS.

  • @NightTerror411 Yes you can. and this video shows you how to do it.

  • @shadyarmik bullshit, this worked for you because the installer found your existing OS and allowed you to wipe prior to installing. A new empty drive would only give you the "Restore or Reboot" option as I just discovered 10 mins ago so you sir, ARE WRONG!

  • @Mononookie You sir are an idiot for simply speaking too soon! How on earth can the install wizard detect an OS if the hard drive is already wiped? How are the hundreds of other people that have commented on this video had success? and yes this goes for OS's going as far back as Panther & Tiger. I suggest you keep you smart ass comments to yourself if you dont know the facts. Move along now.

  • @shadyarmik Rabble! You contradict your self here: "How on earth can the install wizard detect an OS if the hard drive is already wiped?". A brand new hard drive is wiped (no previous os to be found). So, the installer will say "you sir have no os for me to upgrade you may only restore from TM or reboot!". However, if it does detect an os on your existing old hard drive, it will unlock the "Install" feature at which point you may cheat it by running diskutil and wiping it clean. Charade you are!

  • @wraithofwonder Jeez...you people are either deaf or were simply born dumb! I suggest you actually take the time to LISTEN to the fact that I've mentioned several times in the video that this IS the UPGRADE DISC! I do NOT have the full install DVD. For christ's sake, even the packaging is different on the full install DVD. Stop getting involved only to make yourself look stupid because at the end of the day, I have the video evidence. Thank you for the views!

  • @shadyarmik Wow. The disc you have is from the Apple Store, it's the $29.99 disc. The disc I speak of is the $9.95 up-to-date program. It isn't at all special to do a clean install of Snow Leopard from the $29.99 disc. Even the WSJ pointed out that was possible. The trick is doing it from the $9.95 disc where this restriction and dialog exists. Had you bothered to Google, you'd know that instead of denying simple realities. You may Google or continue to make an idiot of yourself. Your choice.

  • Hi, great video!

I have a question. I'm using Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my harddrive.

And I'm wondering: what will happen with iTunes for example. If I install it again, will all my music be in its place again, and my applications for iphone as well?

Please help me, because I don't know where else to ask this...

    Thank you!

  • @Lilililizzy That's one way of doing it. But to be honest, all you need to do is preserve the following files in their locations after re-installing, and your music & app library will remain untouched: iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb & iTunes Music Library.xml. They can be found in: \Users\home folder\Music\iTunes\

  • @shadyarmik Also, make sure that u keep the music and apps in the same location as they were before, which is also in the same folder as the files mentioned above. Hope that helps.

  • I have an installation problem! I got as far as choosing my language, I choose English then get the following error:

You need OSX 10.5 to use this disc

And I get options of: restore from back, up or restart.

I'm running OSX 10.4. Any idea what may be wrong?

  • great video helped me a lot

  • My uncle gave me his old MacBook pro and I just want to delete his files and I just want the system files so should I choose ( don't erase data) or what should I choose?

  • Shady!!! It worked!!! OMG!!! It worked!! Thank you so much!!

  • @teknagirl No problem! Im glad it worked :)

  • Thanks, Shady!! I needed this info baddddd!! After a few unsuccessful attempts, Im gonna try the clean install from Tiger to SL. Let you know how it goes....

  • so did you find that the issues you were having originally with SL were fixed after doing a clean install?

  • @MickV13243 I sure did. It helped in every way.

  • you need to install microsoft office 2008 again??

  • @AOOLF Yes. You'll need to install everything again.

  • Your accent made this video very pleasurable :)

I installed SN but then realized my computer was still as slow as molasses, so I decided to clean install, something I had never attempted. I'm going to follow your steps just as soon as my external drive finishes.

Do you take requests? I'd love a video about how to get files BACK on your Mac once you've clean installed...but come to think of it, there won't be time. I'm going to attempt a clean install anyway ;) THANKS!

  • why did you delete your windows partition?

    good video helped alot

  • @mark110295 I wasnt really using Windows as much as I had anticipated. So It didnt bother me. Glad it helped!

  • Thanks, man. This vid was extremely useful.

  • @goldking12 No problem! Im glad it helped

  • @shadyarmik it is a used one from ebay and hasn't been updated.

  • Apple really did lie! When I get my new Mac im gonna get this upgrade then install snow leopard over tiger!

  • @faxmanloveswaffles If you're getting a new Mac, it should already come with Snow Leopard.

  • ok when i doubled clicked on the install dvd a stop like thing popped up what does that mean o i acendently deleted disk utility and my partion thing is messed up so how can i install it straight from the cd

  • hey mate, thank you very much for the vid. I was planning to do a clean install of SL on my Mac.

  • @tennisfreak312 No problem mate! Glad it helped!

  • @shadyarmik thanks it worked great,

    Pete over here in Canada

  • @Sailtripper No problem mate!

  • Fuck, I have a windows keyboard. Then I cant select the disc at startup! :S It therea way to do it without option key?

  • @HeeeDsHotteR LOL, yea if you hold down the C button during the boot, it'll start straight from the disc.

  • @shadyarmik Thanks

  • So what you're saying is if I have Tiger 10.4.11 I can jump straight to Snow Leopard 10.6 with this $29 upgrade disc?

  • @Demchenko1 Providing you have an Intel CPU, yes.

  • how do i get my mac back to factory condition in which it came with no files or anything on it.if for instance i wanted to sell it.

  • You would have to use the restore discs that came with your mac. There shold be 2 of them. If you insert disc 1, and hold the C button down when you power on the Mac, it will take you through the formatting and installation process.

  • i went to the disk utility in tiger real quick to see if it would show up and it didnt let me click anything or write anything to erase it...will it work wen i put the cd?? and i saw someones comment saying that u need to have 10.5 or else u cant go another step...will it work for me? i have 10.4.11

  • wat if i have only a 1gb ram???

  • do i have to hold down the option key and restart ? are you sure ? Why ??

  • of course im sure. As u can see in the video, when i held it down, the boot menu appeared. you need the boot menu to tell the Mac to boot from the cd instead of the hard drive!

  • Another way in Leopard 10.5: Insert Snow leopard DVD then click system preferences click on startup disk then click on boot from the DVD and restart the Computer no need to hold the option key when it's rebooting.

  • @intheair35 that is the way to get to the boot select. this will select what your computer will boot off of. you can partition the drive and then have different operating systems. go into this menu and change between them. it is the boot selection

  • все пояснение можно было уложить в 2 минуты, вместо 8 минут пи№;?*жа

  • its not a big trick :D windows update only disc can do the same, but you need to activate like a retail. Upgrade key wont workig :D

Luck apple dont have activation disaster

  • im running tiger, when i boot from the CD it says that i need to have 10.5 or later installed. i understand that you do this clean with no OS on it, but it wont let me select disk utility at the top of the screen once i boot from the CD. should i erase everything THEN boot from the CD? but then i dont want to be left with no OS at all if it doesnt work. im confused why it lets you select disc utility with the install menu open and doesnt let me get that far... :( any ideas?!?!

  • my heart was beating out of my chest when i hit erase on my aunts school computer but i trusted you and it says installing so i suppose its working and yes i did back every thing up, we will see, if it does u get 5 stars and a sub

  • thanks for the tips dude.. just did my old comp from Tiger to Snow Leopard from your vid.. worked GRRRREAT!!!

  • I´m planning on upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard in the way you´ve explained in your video.

I only have the old iLife '06 that was preinstalled on my iMac.

Can I install that version of iLife on Snow Leopard using the 2 (Tiger) discs that came with the iMac back in 2006?

    Thanks for the great video!

  • @switchxbladex no mate you can't just wate for ilife10

  • Well explained thanks !!

  • I got windows 7 clean on my PC free, enjoy getting your money stolen

  • Hi! im super confused, SO i tried to upgrade (Without the understanding that I first needed leopard to upgrade to snow leopard) and a note came up saying I didnt have enough RAM when I did, when I called MAC they told me the sitaution was taht I didnt have leopard (tiger instead). So i researched online and found out that it was still possible. I found your video, followed ur steps but after erasing my hard drive that message still comes up, What do i do????

  • That is a strange situation. I (as many others) have actually used the upgrade disc to install snow leopard from scratch without an operating system, let alone an older version. Are you sure that you're following my video carefully? Nothing can actually stop it from installing at the low level stages.

  • HI. I LOVE your video.

btw, I want to upgrade my imac tiger v10.4.11 to snow leopard, But my Matshita DVD drive is broken. Can I still download SL with external DVD drive(that's not brand apple)?

  • As long as you're able to boot from that external drive I would assume it shouldnt be a problem. What u can do to make sure is connect the drive to ur Mac, insert the Mac OS DVD. Then power on your Mac while holding the D button on your keyboard. If you see the Mac OS installation appear then it would seem that the external drive would work. but incase something should happen during the process make sure you BACK YOUR DATA UP! lol

I Appreciate the support! dont forget to subscribe :)

  • Shadyarmik you are the man! Thanks a ton. Upgraded from Tiger to Snow leopard without any issues. Thanks again man.

  • i tried doing this on my panther os and nothing happened.after inserting the disc and restarting with alt key pressed i only got mac hd icon on the screen the disc icon didnt show.what should i do?please help.

  • isent this elegal

  • why is it illegal to erase your own harddrive and install a operating system on it?

  • @fritzov Its not.

What I explained was the pricing for the "upgrade" version of Snow Leopard was strictly for those who already have regular Leopard.

If you dont, then you're "supposed" to pay the full retail price which is roughly £129. But either way, the discs are the same.

Apple work on a loyalty pricing scheme.

  • @hobolikespie11 no not at all

  • Hey guys, i hope to install Snow Leopard on my Mac G4 old desktop, it has ~850 Mhz dual core, 1.25 GB Ram, 60 GB HDD, hope it works. I wanted to ask if there is any Antivirus for a MAC? my last MAC OS X just stopped working one day so i want to reinstall Snow Leopard now.

  • @JurisL85 snow leopard will not run on your computer. it only supports intel processors now. sorry!

  • yes, Snow Leopard will not work as that only works on Intel Mac's.

  • gracias amigo!!!!

  • cool tutorial thank brother...

hey i have couple questions how do i get the applications as (garageband i life and iwork)?

  • Well its just a case of having to install iLife and iWork from the cds as normal.

  • work with panther and powerpc g4?

  • Nope. Snow Leopard is for Intel CPU's only.

  • you're my hero!! i had tiger and i tried this and it worked. thank you SOOO MUCH :D

  • Alright Im going to go try this tutorial out now! I will tell you if it worked out good. I tried regularly installing this with my desktop and data still on my mac so I will erase it and see if it doesnt have a fail message

  • hey, i thought snow leopard was to restor the computer to factory settings?

if its not, how could i do it?

  • No, Snow Leopard isnt a restore disc. Its a completely new operating system however you have the option of upgrading to it while keeping ur current system settings, or you can do a clean install which starts from scratch by erasing everything but performs better. Just dont forgot to back everything up ;)

  • actually sorry to kill your buzz but i opened the snow leopard and in the instructions is said you can restor to factory settings which i did :) you can do loadsa tings with it, its all in the intructions

  • Hey australian mate. Thanks for the tuts and clean explanation. I got it all working out and I gotta tell you, I am very happy with the results. Clean install and piece of mind. I was running tiger and bought the $29. The guy at the mac store wanted me to buy the $299 kit and i told him to forget it. Try another customer. I am buying the $29. Like I said: I was on TIGER and now I am running SNOW LEOPARD. THANKS TO YOU shadyarmik.

  • My question has always been. Can anybody get the leopard 10.6 CD and put it in a Windows Vista OS PC and install it with full functionality?

  • Not directly. You need to download a 'Hackintosh' version which is a cracked version of the cd that is re-programmed to run under pc hardware. Also note that Mac OS is very picky on the type of hardware it runs on. So if it doesnt run dont be surprised. if you google "Hackintosh" you can find endless amounts of info on this.

  • great first vid

  • no startup chime?

  • This was a really easy guide for a clean installation. Worked like a charm on my Mac Pro. Thank you so much!

  • Thank you! Finally someone touched on this!

  • No problemo!

  • Very helpful, thanks. Ike

  • Thanks very helpful video!

  • Comment removed

  • just want to say thanks for the helpful video. i know nothing about computers and you made the installation so easy. also, i upgraded directly from tiger to snow leopard so it does work. thanks again!

  • No problem buddy!

    Glad the video helped!

  • I have used CD1 and CD2 to install iLife 08 and it works fine. You can even install iWork 08 (trial) and Microsoft office 2004 using both of these CDs.

  • when i try to boot from the snow leopard disc, holding option down at start up i get the apple logo followed by the "NO" icon (circle with slash through it...not a welcome screen...any ideas out there?

  • thats a bit of a strange one. As u can see from other comments here other ppl arent having trouble so I honestly have no idea as to why thats happening. try googling it

  • i have a panther os.when i inserted the disc and restarted with the options pressed i only had the mac hd icon the disc icon was not there.kindly guide me if theres another way for me to install snow leopard.

  • the video would've been better if you had10.4 (tiger) so you can prove your point..... i still hear u can't upgrade unless u have leopard....... but since u have leopard it worked sooo idk what to believe lol

  • I dont think you understand this properly...

If I install it cleanly, it means it works without an operating system on the computer! It makes no difference as to whether Tiger or Leopard is installed before hand. Therefore my point is proven!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you very much

I just want to ask, how can then install ilife 08 after earasing the HD and intalling Snow Leopard?

iLife 08 is on the socend CD that came with my iMac is not it?

  • I dont think so. That comes as a bundle with 10.5...but then again Ive personally never tried. Try inserting the 2nd disc in and see what happens!

Lemme know if it works. Im curious.

  • Is it the same way to upgrade to snow leopard from tiger by this method?

  • Pretty much the same. Just make sure you boot from the CD instead of loading the CD up whilst in Mac OS.

  • hey, apparently you don't even need leopard to upgrade. i heard that tiger works fine w/ the $29 upgrade via walt mossburg's article. going to have my fam back home try it this afternoon and we'll see if it works

  • Thats exactly what my video proves.

  • thanks for this video!

  • you can also press D to boot from DVD

  • nice videos, helps alot

  • wish apple had told us this before lol

great tutorial mate, might give this ago in a couple of weeks :)
